Hi Mommas!
I wanted to get some ideas from everyone please.
I use cloth during the day but really need something great for night. Currently we are using disposables but I'm really tired of using them.
When we first started cloth diapering we used bumgenius for overnight but now those don't work. The velcro will no longer stick. :(( I really don't want to buy more bumgenius because they just didn't hold up like I expected them too and they really don't fit well enough for nights now anyway.
Our daughter sleeps 12-13 hours. She breaks out in a BAD rash if moisture stays on her skin for that long or if she's in PUL for that long so we need something that has an awesome staydry liner and no PUL. Does such a diaper exist?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

I researched cloth before my boys were born, and "settled" on Seventh Generation disposables. They are non-chlorine and break down much quicker than regular plastic throw aways. We had maybe 2 leaks, but once they added the elastic waistband, no more leaks! They're worth a try!

My daughter is 18 months and we cloth diaper 24/7 - 365 days a year - she is allergic to disposables. My favorite combination is prefolds with an infant prefold as a doubler with wool pants during the cooler nights and a wool soaker during warmer nights. If you have any questions or need help, there is a group that meets in Newnan once a month about cloth diapering, and other child/baby concerns. I have used a wide variety of diapers for nighttime - pockets, fitteds, prefolds, different covers, and finally found what works for us. If you want to try these different diapers, contact me offlist and we can talk about it some more.

I have the bumgenius velcro too. I don't know if you have tried it but there are instructions on their website for how to "fix" the velcro if it stops being sticky enough. I think they are also selling diapers with snaps now, if that changes your plans any.

I have been using hemp doublers along with my regular bumgenius insert and they do pretty well. My daughter doesn't have the problem with PUL though. I get all my diapers from www.momsmilkboutique.com and the owners are very helpful- you could e-mail them for suggestions. They helped me find my hemp doublers. Good luck!

If you keep trying & trying, and you can't find a good cloth one to go all through the night, Seventh Generation makes a chlorine-free diaper that is VERY soft - they don't have that crinkly, plastic between the legs like Pampers. It's still a disposable, but it's better than most, both for the kid (because it's softer than other disposables and drier than cloth ones - at least all the ones I tried) and for the environment. (We found 'em on Amazon for a decent price - Whole Foods had them, but charged significantly more.)

I tried cloth for a while, (I wanted to be more environmentally-friendly), but I could never find anything that kept him dry, esp. at night. This, for me, was the "next best thing" I could find. (And their baby wipes are the best - they don't feel as cold on the skin as most of them. You know how rubbing alcohol feels cold on your skin and oil doesn't, even though they're they same temperature? Same thing. But I digress...)

(Y'all please don't flame me for dissing cloth. I promise I tried!)

The cheapest, most effective way we found to keep moisture of our son's skin while we was in cloth diapers was to go to the fabric store, get a fraction of a yard of polar fleece and then cut it up in rectangles that could fit easily into the cloth diaper (oriented like a pad in undies, so that the polar fleece is against the baby's skin). The urine still went through it to the absorbant layers, but the fleece's natuaral wicking ability kepts the baby's bottom dry.

Hi S.! I have to say that I concur with what you said about the BumGenius not holding up so well. I have, admittedly, gotten some good use out of mine, but I am sick to death of having to put diaper covers on my son so that his diaper does not fall off when he wears certain clothes. =(. I DO use the BumGenius overnight for my 11 mo (17.5 lbs), but my 2 1/2 yo (33-35 lbs) daughter has been in XL FuzzyBunz at night for at least a year. She sleeps for about 12 hours, also. I actually use the regular FB insert, along with a hemp insert and hemp/fleece doubler. She has EXTREMELY sensitive skin, but I have never had trouble with the PUL, so I can't speak to that, but she does not get rashes from this. I have no complaints about absorption, except that she is not small for her age and the FB are a bit narrow, so they are not a FANTASTIC fit alone (w/o the hemp addition). We have perhaps one leak every 2-3 weeks. I hope you get the answers you need...I know I felt like I was taking a rather expensive shot in the dark when I started out, as kids all vary so much and nobody can really predict what will work best for you.

I used Vermont Diaper Co. fitteds at night and absolutely LOVED their absorbancy!!! I, too, added a fleece "doubler" to wick away the moisture. THey are phenomenol! We are now expecting our first little boy (after 2 girls) so I am trying to get more for my stash - so I am selling off all the others...if you would like to try one, let me know!! I hope you find one that works for you (and your daughter)!!!

IMO, you need to use something that will keep her dry and prevent the rash. So if that means disposables at night, so be it. 13 hours is a long time to be wet! I've used Huggies overnites with son and daughter and they worked great.

For nighttime I usually use a prefold and a cover. They just hold it better. But that doesn't solve the keeping the bottom dry problem. I have some fleece inserts that are meant to put on top of the prefold to put a layer between the baby's skin to keep them dry. I haven't used them much as it hasn't really been an issue, but that might work for you. I tried buying fleece at the fabric store and making my own, but it did not let the moisture through, so I guess I got the wrong stuff. The ones I bought for the purpose worked well though.

For your BG's I have to take mine and use an old black comb to comb the hook part of the velcro about every other wash. If I do this they still stick OK after more than 2 years of usage, but a do prefer snap closure now as they hold up better. There is an organic BG that comes in snap closure, still one size fits all. I have one and like it, but not for overnight. I like Fuzzi Bunz too, but don't like how the fit can be a little baggy with some kids and that you have to buy all the different sizes. Prefolds and covers work best for me and are definitely cheapest. I like the Bummies cover that has snaps.
