I would like any Moms to give me their experiences and knowledge on how to get certified to teach school. I have a Bachelor of Science with a minor in Economics from Tarleton State University. I graduated in 1998. I have yet to use the degree in my career. I was in banking all through college and was very happy in that field so I continued on until this year. But two buy outs did me in and then I had another baby last year and I am now staying home. I know I will be going back to work in a year or two when my youngest gets older and I want to do something different. Has anyone gotten their teaching certificate by going back after getting your degree (which was not geared towards being a teacher)? How does that work? Where can I go to get information on the internet about this? How long does it take? How much does it cost? Do you have to do student teaching? What subjects would I teach? I am not really that "into Economics" it was just easy to me for some strange reason and so that is what my degree is in. But I have not kept up with it and probably could not pass an intro to Economics final. LOL. And I want to be a teacher??? LOL. So anyone who has info on this please let me know the advantages and disadvantages of it. What to do and not to do as far as getting the certificate. And also how can I decide what grade level is best for and my personalities and skills. Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have decided to get my certification through the Region 11 Education Service Center. I have applied there and I am waiting for my interview. I appreciate all your input. I hope to start teaching the fall of 2008. Hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer. Take care.

Good Morning!

If I remember correctly, it is called alternative certification. My sister looked into for a while as she is a lawyer and well, she doesn't care for the hours she has to put in for trials...she never persued it though...

I did a search and came up with this for certification in the ft worth area...I hope this helps!!!

If you go thru a school districts emergency/alternative certification program, be aware that the certificate is usually only geared for that school district. You're best bet is to only get certified with the state...then you can change school districts.

You can actually get hired to teach in any feild that you have at least 24 college credit hours in. Once you get hired, you can then go through an alternative certification process. It's best to start the process before applying, so that you can put it on your applications. You can go through whatever Region Fort Worth is... I know Dallas is Region 10, you can go through local colleges, or you can do iteachtexas.com. If you're wanting to get hired for next year, start putting in applications now. Then, keep checking online, because many postings go up over the summer.

Good luck!

I have been teaching in a Ft. Worth HS for 7 years, and have seen many teachers do alternative certifications. Many times, the teachers have been hired and then have to complete coursework and have observations to get their certifications. I know that Fort Worth requires you to have completed your certification within 3 years. In order to be certified for HS, you would have to pass the state exam for Economics and Professional Knowledge. It is a big step, and I have seen many people try it out and leave within a few months. You may want to consider volunteering in a high school or doing something that would give you a better idea if you want to be a teacher or not. Good luck to you!

I graduated from TSU too and I want to teach school too. I just have a BS in Human Sciences but I want to teach High School. There is a program at TSU called TMATE and the only requirements that I read for that is that you need a certain GPA, BS degree, accepted into Graduate school, GRE (graduate test score) or certain score on the THEA test. Then you gotta take classes and pass the TEXES test on your certain area that you want to teach. There is other programs out there.

My husband went through an alternative certification program several years ago called ECAP. It basically consisted of 4 weeks of training in the summer and then he had to pass his tests. The nice thing is that if you don't have a position when you sign up for the program they guarantee they will have you placed for the following school year.
Fort Worth is in region 11 which also has an alternative certification program but I don't know much about it.

Good Luck!
