Need Helping Picking Out a Bed!!

The question is tempurpedic or sleep number?? Now I have tried them both out and I am not sure which one to get. I have back/hip problems and I have had this issue for 7 years. We bough a beautyrest about 4 years ago and since we have had that bed, I wake up every morning with severe back stiffness and it doesn't go away till the afternoon. Now I truly feel that if I had a different bed, I wouldn't have this problem. So if anyone can give me their input on either of the beds listed above, I would greatly appreciate it!!

What can I do next?

I have a nice Sealy I think so I can't help you there BUT... I read just a few days ago some mom talking about Sleep number being the worse $3000 she ever spent. Sorry I don't remember who but I do agree that with mattresses, you get what you pay for.

I got a Serta a few years ago and the first night I slept on it one of the kids spilled a cup of milk on it. I hadn't even had a chance to get the cover on it yet. So no warranty.

I hated that bed from day one.

We've been looking and looking. We had a Tempurpedic picked out, it has light brown sides and a textured top, not a pillow top either. But all together it over $4000. Not what I am comfortable spending on a mattress. Now our box springs are in excellent condition, so I should be able to just buy a new softer mattress right? NO, they say if you buy the Tempurpedic they only sell them in the set or they warranty them either. They are made to go together.

I found a bed that was totally totally the most comfortable supportive bed I have ever laid on. I sunk into it and felt surrounded in comfort. I was ready to buy it. I was a Southerland and was a combination gel and memory foam. The set was only about $600. A lot of savings is good in my book.

OH MY STARS! It was so comfortable.

BUT I told the lady we'd have to do some research into the brand because we weren't familiar with it and it has the worst reviews. Evidently the company does not stand behind their warranty nor do the mattresses last more than about 3 months before they start sinking in the middle and you can't sleep on them anymore.

We're going to OKC this weekend and maybe we can go to some furniture stores to try out mattresses and look at furniture too.

I would love to save the money on the Tempurpedic and still get one that was softer but I imagine we'll go with another style since I cannot imagine paying that kind of money for a bed.

I hope you can pin the company down on their sleep warranty. A lot of the better company's will have a 90 day return policy if you can't sleep on the bed. Just get that cover on both pieces as soon as it comes in the door!

I *hate* my sleep number bed more than anything in the world. My husband loves it. Thank goodness he travels a lot and I can sleep in the guest room on our Simmons - my most favorite bed ever. It took me about 2 months to truly hate it though, so if you get one, know the return policy and keep your paperwork. I wake up literally unable to stand up straight and lift my feet to walk every day. A hot shower helps, but I shuffle and stoop over much of the morning. I am not yet 40, so it's ridiculous...I don't have health problems. Sometimes it even makes me feel like I have pain in my kidneys. My sister also slept on it when we were out of town and she had kidney pain those nights too. I would not recommend this bed to anyone. Oh, and my husband likes his side less inflated than I do, so we can't sleep close together because I roll into him...he's lower. There's also no support to for me to sleep on my stomach, which I rarely do anyway, but I have don't even have the option it is so uncomfortable. Do you want to have to press a button and adjust the bed every time you roll over? It's a stupid bed. Don't get it. It's a glorified air mattress with a pillow top and box spring. If you really think you need one, get a blow up bed from target. If you love sleeping on that, maybe the sleep number bed actually would work for you. Oh, and the inside is made of the same rubber that white water rafts are made of, and it STINKS for a while when it is new. It also doesn't breathe...I often wake up in the night sweaty, gross I know, but I have never had that problem in another bed...and it isn't pre-menopause either. Don't get a sleep number bed. Have I convinced you? I really really hate that bed.

My elder lady friend purchased a tempurpedic, based on their money-back guarantee. She is about my height, 5' 0". After trying it out, she found that the part that "bends" at the knees, is for a taller person, and she couldn't use it as an electric bed. She went back, almost the next day, to return it. They told her that she can return only the mattress, not the electric base--which was the only part she couldn't use! They told her that her "contact" stated that. When she said that she didn't sign any contract, they showed her the reverse side of her bill. I was printed yellow-on-yellow, hardly visible, and stated that only the top memory foam type mattress, not the electric base, carried the money back guarantee. (I could hardly read it myself!) And she never signed anything, either. Well, she took them to court, and after several months, she won her money back (less the lawyer, court costs and the hassles). They picked up the system and returned her money. Watch out for "money back guarantees!"

Had the same problem with the Beautyrest. Bought the iComfort and it is so much better. We made sure to get the one with a layer of cooling gel to help dissipate the heat, which is why we didn't go with Tempurpedic.

I have never slept on a Sleep Number bed, but I have a few friends who have them, and for the most part, they don't seem thrilled ("it's an over-priced air mattress" says one of my friends).

We wanted a Tempurpedic, but had a little sticker shock. Did some research, and decided to try the NovaFoam bed ("bed in a box" from Costco). It was $700 or so for the Cal King size. And being Costco, we knew if we hated it, we could bring it back for a full refund. Well, we bought it two years ago, and love it! Still feels like new, and is so comfortable. It feels very supportive, but not hard. I don't wake up due to my arms or legs falling asleep, like I used to with the pillow top mattress we used to have. Overall, I've been very happy, and the price was right!

When we decided to switch to a foam mattress, we got a NovaForm from Costco (like someone else did). I hated it! I woke up every morning in pain. But my husband liked it. Maybe it worked for him because he's a side sleeper and I'm all over the place? So then we bought a tempur-pedic, which he liked even better. I still woke up stiff and hurting but that stopped after a month or so.

So, long story short, I vote Tempur-Pedic.

Read my recent and similar question. In the "what happened" section I explain why I hate my Sleep number bed. But don't take my word for it; google "i hate my sleep number bed" and you will find it is a common sentiment.

Love my "Bobs Tempurpedic". Comes from Bobs Discount Furniture store. Not sure if you have them out there. For a king it was $1200.00. My back and hips have been so much better. Like you I would wake up in agony everyday. No longer do I.

Second the one about sleep number being an over priced air mattress. I know several who hate it, and have had problems with the mattress popping and having trouble returning it.

I only know 2 people with tempurpedics and they love them and said they will never go back to a regular bed. I think my next purchase will be a tempurpedic, if I can just get my husband to spend the money.

I have fibromyalgia and was waking up to the point I was in tears from pain.

We got the tempurpedic (cloud I believe?) and it literally has saved my life. I wake up with very little pain now. It is seriously amazing.

My husband, who doesn't have fibro, LOVES the bed.

He and I are fairly frugal people, but we also believe you get what you pay for and believe in high quality products. It is absolutely worth every penny. You won't be sorry with the tempurpedic. We have slept on it for the past few years and we still cannot WAIT to get into bed! ;)

ETA: We literally spent hours at the mattress store laying on the different beds. We made sure to lay in the bed we purchased for a while, making sure it was a good fit for us. Do this - and don't let the salespeople make you feel odd. It is a BIG purchase - like test driving a car. Take your time and lay there!
