So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. I used lemons and ice cubes. My kitchen is not only "stinky free" it now has a hint of lemon fresh when I run the disposal.

Buy two real lemons at the store and cut the peels off thin. Put them into the garbage disposal and let it run for a while. You will soon smell the sweet lemons.
I heard baking soda can work well too.
Hope it helps. K.

Hi L.,
Try some baking soda straight from the box. Just poor it down the sink and let it sit for about 5 minutes and then rinse with hot water. Hope this helps.

Cut up a lime and put it down the garbage disposal. I think any citrus fruit will work, but i always use limes.

I run my garbage disposal and pour pine sol or lysol in it instead of water. And then run cold water for a few minutes. It really helps. Also Wal-Mart has these things that you put into your disposal to clean and make it fresh. I recommend the orange one!

You can use lemon rind. Put cut up lemon rind in and let her go with the water running. If it is really bad, go to Lowes and they sell these little yellow packets that you stick in and it really works. Read the directions carefully. You don't open the packets, you stick it right in!

There's a great cleaner in the dish detergent aisle at any grocery store (or target)... it's lemon-scented packets that you put down the disposal and then run hot water, it froths and then it's clean as a whistle! I can't remember the name, but it's something totally obvious like "Disposal Clean" and is in a green or black box with yellow on it.

For a more natural alternative, I would suggest putting an entire lemon, orange or grapefruit (cut into smaller pieces) into the disposal and grind them up.

Good luck!

Hi, L.:
Try cutting a couple of lemons in half then tossing them in your garbage disposal for grinding. That usual does the trick for me! Another tip for garbage disposal maintenance-throw in some ice cubes for grinding, helps sharpen the blades.
Hope this helps!

Grind lemon rinds or even grapefruit rinds and that should do the trick! You can also add ice cubes and salt and that will sharpen your disposal blades at the same time!

Good Luck!!! =)

Put baking soda and vinegar in it. When the fizzing stops, pour a kettle of boiling water through it. You can also run a lemon through the disposal and that will make your kitchen smell better!

Hi,
I'm assuming you have already checked to see if something is stuck and rotting? If not, turn off the power and remove the pipe to clean out. For preventative measures, pour down a half cup of vinegar and let it set for 10 min. before rinsing with hot water.

I believe if you put some cut up citrus pieces (lemon, lime, or orange) down there and turn it on it should help.

Boil it out with baking soda & white vinegar. Pour about a cup of baking soda into the disposer and about a half cup into the drain on the other side (if you have a two sided sink). Then pour white vinegar into both sides. I usually use a gallon of vinegar total. When you pour the vinegar in, it will bubble up like crazy... I usually wait for about an hour then run really hot water down each side for a few minutes.

Hey L.! I was having the same problem but it was because my garbage disposal broke and all the water was accumulating in my dishwasher and the odor was horrible. The plummer went to my house and told me a trick really good!If your garbage disposal is not broke and if you have dishwasher. Pour Hot water in the garbage disposal and turn it on. If it doesnt work that ok! Take the dishwasher and put it to work but where it says Water saver. It will take out all the bad water. And just do like the other girls told you just put lemon or bleach. Make sure you don't have food stock in the blades of the disposal.

Buy 2 or 3 lemons, oranges, limes... whatever is citrus fruit and cheap... doesn't really matter. Cut them up into pieces small enough to grind up in the disposal. The citrus smell and apparently the rind itself grinding against the metal takes out most any smell I've ever had in a garbage disposal... and there have been some nasty smells!
Another tip for cleaning microwaves that works great with lemons... cut them up into large chunks, put them into a large coffee cup or measuring bowl (something that can withstand a few minutes in the microwave) and add water (leave about 2-3 inches at the top for boiling). Microwave the cup/bowl for about 3 minutes to boil the lemon water. The steam from will melt most any nasty gunk (especially spaghetti stains) from the inside of a microwave. Just wipe clean with a paper towel. Then you can dump the lemons and water into the disposal and turn it on... double the use!
Wow, I'm Martha Stewart's clone! :-)
Good luck!

I agree with your last response. Oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit will help make that smell go away. If you want add a little bleach to the sink full of water and then pull the plug as it's draining down that side of the sink where the disposer is turn the switch on.
Then, put in your citrus fruits. Please cut them into 4th's, don't try to stick the fruit whole in. I know that probably doesn't even need to be said.

Ice, egg shells will definitely help to sharpen the blades.
