I got into debt when I first turned 18. It has gradually gotten worse over that past 5 years. I am trying to pay it off right now, but I have a 3 mth old baby. What I want to know is, I went to a school here in tulsa and wasn't able to finish. they refunded part of my finincail aid and now i owe the school 2300.00. they sent it over to a collection agency and the guy in charge of my acct was a complete jerk and hung up on me. I want to know if the school can or will sue me for the money. I want to pay them, I just dont want to go through the collection agency.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

SO, I want to thank every one for their response to my advice. It was all really good advice and I considered all of it. It's nice to know that I am not the only who is going through things like this, anyways, I just wanted to let everyone know that I was able to talk to the collection agency manager and he was very nice and explained everything and I was able to set up a payment plan. My hubby and I are determined to pay off our debt, so I think this time we will get it done. anyways thanks to all of you

Call the school and try to make arrangements. If the need arises ask to speak with a supervisor. Explain to them your situation with your daughter and what is going on and see what they can work out with you. If you need any other information e-mail me at ____@____.com please. also please keep me posted as to what happens with your situation.

Hi...my name is C. and i just moved to tulsa. I read your request and thought i would tell u what i know about this subject.
I did exactly the same thing right after my first son was born. I went back to school and didn't finish. I was receiving financial aid. The school tried to collect, but at the time i was unable to pay. The school can not sue you. They can try to collect through a collections agency. If you want to pay off the debt, the best way would probably be for you to make some sort of settlement with the collection agency. They will normally settle for less than what you owe, just so they can collect money.
The only drawback to this situation is that until you get it paid, you won't be able to get financial aid to go back to school. I am trying this one myself right now.

I hope i helped.

L., from what I understand and this may just be on like medical issues but if you pay at least $5 a month they cant do anything to you. When paying at least $5 it shows that you are trying to pay it. You might look into it to see if I am correct or not.

I would recommend that you go to Consumer Credit Coucelors, they are funded by United Way and is free. At least it was when I went there. You do need to call and make an appointment, and make sure you have all of your bills together. Then they will set you up on a payment plan that you can slowly pay off your debt. By doing this, the collection companies have to leave you alone, because you are actively making an effort to pay everything off. When I did this, I was about to file bankruptcy but my mom talked me into going and although it took about 4 years to pay everything off, I now have almost perfect credit and I no longer have to avoid phone calls, because it may be a collector.

Good Luck
