Hello. I have 1 daughter that is 19 months old. I'm new to mamasource and in a bit of a bind so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I have a part time job and am looking for a sitter/nanny to watch my child the 2 days I work. I had a lady that would watch her but, she found a job during the day. I got the part time job to help out with bills. I hate to take my child to a daycare for the only fact we do not have the $185 a week to take her there. Hence the fact I got a part time job. The lady I had before was perfect, just $50 a day when I needed her. Unfortunetly, I have no close family or friends that can care for my child. I have looked on sitter city and most of them are too far or are just sitters for weekend. I have looked at craigs list and have not had much luck. The nanny's that I do find are too expensive wanting $10/hr which leaves me at $85 a day (same price as a daycare). I'm having such horrible luck. I was just wondering if anybody out there had any other suggestions I didn't already think of. Am I sounding too cheap???

What can I do next?

Try lakecountyhomedaycare.com. It is a list of home daycares in Lake County and it is divided, so if you needed someone in Antioch they are all together in that one place. It is a great website!

Good Luck!

Both of the colleges in my town offer babysitter lists or lists to college students. You can contact the career services if you have any local colleges or such and ask them if they post positions. I have an e-mail of questions I like answered before I meet with them. I usually pay 7 or 7.50 for two kids. Also, try to look at different "pre-schools". My kids do a pre-school (they are 2) thing where they go for 4 hours and it is cheap (like $4/hr for both!!). That could take part of your problem away. The only problem is they don;t advertise or anything so you should drive around your area and look for churches that may have "pre-school" and call them.

Hi J.,

Without knowing where you live or work, I do have a recommendation for a wonderful woman who does daycare out of her home in Naperville. She watched my daughter for 3 years when I worked 2.5 days/week (I was in the same situation as you - needed someone a few days per week that wouldn't cost more than I was making!). Please send me a message if you'd like her info or have any questions.

Check your local YWCA they have a service that for a small fee you can get a list of local daycare facilities.

Hi
Try finding an in-home daycare - maybe check for names/references at your church or other moms in your area. Rates are typically much lower than the daycare centers or someone coming to your home.

I'd love to help out but I'm in Glendale Heights basically right off of 355 and army trail. I normally only charge about $3-5 an hour depending on what you need done. If you bring her here I'd only charge $3/hr. I am a stay at home mom of two and babysit part time during the day for one more child. :) I hope I can help...DO NOT pay anyone $10/hr that is just insane! Find someone in college or something....you can try craigslist as well.

Where are you located?

There is one at 146th & Allisonville Road between Noblesville and Fishers. Very reasonable, $90 for 2 days. She does lots of activities with the kids and has good meals and snacks. Her # is ###-###-#### if this works for you, her name is Amanda. She has recommendations on this site from her parents.

We found the best babysitter on craigslist. You do come across some crazies on there. But you can tell right off the bat if they would be okay. It's free to post. Just put what you are looking for and they will come to you. I was nervous at first, but glad I did, beacause our sitter is like part of the family now. Good Luck!

I'm telling you right now anyone asking for $10 an hour is out of their mind. You don't need a nanny... just a babysitter. Daycare rates are $2 an hour for full-time (assuming they watch other children as well).

Try contacting Early Childhood Alliance. Or contact any other agency that licenses daycare providers. They should have a list of available daycare professionals in the area.

www.ecalliance.org

Otherwise, try putting a free ad in the newspaper. I don't trust anyone automatically. Ask for references. I generally interview the daycare providers for a couple hours. I talk to them without the kids and then bring them back with the kids for the second round of interviews to see how they interact. I also drop in on providers when they don't know you're coming so you can see what the environment is like when they are not expecting you, how they handle visitors and watch the children at the same time. Ask questions and just chat. You can get a good feel for people just chatting. If you feel or see any red flags, then keep looking.

Just keep looking. We found our sitter we recently quit as well as the new one we are starting next week on craigslist. I don't know where you live but I got quite a few responses and some good (a lot of bad) rates. We had offers ranging from $40 a day to much much more. We settled on an in between one. Also look in the paper (or on their website) for places to call. I know it is such a hard and stressful thing to do!!!

J.,
I was in the same boat, wanting partial-week care at home but couldn't afford nanny prices. I called my church and they had a parishoner's list of babysitters. I went down the list and found two grandmas who were willing to take a couple of days each. I'm pay $5.00 to bring my child to one and I pay $8.00 to the other for care in my home. My daughter is getting one-on-one care by loving grandmas who have so much experience (which is nice for a first-time mom) and they are so responsible, they would never dream of being late for work! They love it because they have a reason to get out of the house a few days a week and earn some extra cash. We couldn't be happier! Good luck,
