Hello Fellow Moms,

I live in Allen and I have a noticed a family that lives down the street from me. There seems to be a single mom with 4 children living in a house that does not have the electricity turned on, the children are barely clothed when they play outside, and the window are constantly open day and night with no screens covering them. My heart is burdened for their family and I want to try and gather some information to help them. I have gotten information about the "Angel Food Ministry" that I will pass on to her but I was wondering if anyone knew of a local financial assistance program that could help them with the electricity?

God Bless You All!!

Call Allen Community Outreach. TXU provides help with electricity but the someone in the household must be on medicaid. Home phone service has the same kind of discount. Allen Community Outreach provides financial assistance once a year and they have a food bank that can be used once a month. Also, what neighborhood, do these people live in. The city of Allen has a home improvement grant that will pay for necessary things to be fixed in the house like broken windows, a/c unit, etc.

I thought TXU had a program for low-income families that provided them with free electricity. I remember seeing a commercial for it one summer. Not sure if it still exists, but it's worth looking into. Also, you could call Texas Health and Human Services (they have a McKinney office) and ask them about these types of resources as they should know as they refer people out to local resources.

Oh, that is terrible!!!!!! How old are the children? We were just going through clothes and what not and may have some. Also, do you have a guess on the Mom's size?

You know L. there is a special place in heaven for mom's like you =)That is so wonderful what your doing. And in this day and age noone does things like this anymore. I was going thru my kids closets and thought I would have a garage sale but since reading this I'd rather donate the clothes to someone who needs them more than anyone else. Do you know what size the kids are by chance? And maybe the mother as well? I feel that the other mom's on the site will all pull togther and help this mom. Just let me know in what I can send these clothes. Maybe if we can all send her care packages to her home to help out that way she won't feel embarassed? That's just a idea. D.

you can call 611 from any landline and give your zipcode and they can tell you about any assistance programs (for electricity) for your area! Good luck...she is lucky to have a neighbor like you!

In Allen, there is the Allen Food Pantry located at St Jude Catholic Church in case they need assistance with food.

My prayers are with this family. It's so nice of you to try to help them. Please keep us posted.

I know a person that was in somewhat of the same situation about 6 years ago. If I understood her correctly she went to the Church and they paid her electricity bill. I just phoned her and she said that she went to the Church and "asked for the Pastor" and explained to him that she was in a horrible financial trouble and that she couldn't afford to pay her electricity bill for her and her daughter. They helped her immidiately. I don't know if this will work for the family down the street but it is worth a try. If you could find out what size clothes they need maybe I could talk to some of my friends and see if anyone has anything to donate. I would love to help in anyway I can. Good Luck!
