Hi there,

I am looking for suggestions for swim lessons for my 4 year old daughter. Last year she did them at her daycare, but now I am a stay at home mom and she will not be in daycare. I would prefer something that is at least three times a week. I am open to private or group lessons. I have looked into the YMCA and Emler, but would love feedback on good/bad experiences or better options. I appreciate any information I can get.

What can I do next?

I use Jessie Prim. She teaches at her home. She is incredible. 4 years ago, she took my son from a complete fear of the water to swimming in two weeks. Last summer she taught my daughter who is now 5 how to swim in two weeks. She is in expensive only $65 for the set of lessons. I have referred many friends to Jessie, and I have never heard a negative thing said about her. Visit her website, she opened her lessons up on April 1st. You will see how many sessions are already full. She is word of mouth only she does no advertising. http://www.freewebs.com/swimwithprim/index.htm

Best of luck finding something!

There is a wonderful, private, survival swim coach in Presmont Subdivision(121 to Coit to Lebanon then behind Clark Middle School) in Frisco called Mr D. He is a retired Marine and is absolutely great. My baby (of four children) took lessons under him two summers ago and then a one week refresher last summer. The classes are 10 minutes EVERY week day for three weeks. I know it sounds odd but there is a reason why he does it that way. They also have to pass a test of simulated "falling" into the pool in full winter clothing (to learn to adjust to possible extra weight). My daughter went from crying if water splashed into her face to swimming across the pool. He is calm, gently and incredibly kind. He uses his voice to calm the children. I must admit it is tough to see your child cry the first week but if you can get through that part, your money will be well spent. The contact information that I have is Mr. D's Infant Aquatic Survival www.infantaquatics.com ###-###-####

Try Ms. Ruth's Swimming Academy. (121 and Independence)
She's a great mom, who teaches swimming from her home.

Hey J. our little girl took lessons at Lifetime Fitness on 121 and Lake Forest and really enjoyed it! I'm almost positive that you can take their classes without even having to be a member. Good Luck!

have you considered Allen's park and rec's? They hold them at the Natatorium and Joe Farmer. The Nat is off 75 & Exchange Parkway. I haven't used them for swim lessons but I personally take water aerobics there for the past 1.5 years. The Nat is indoors and clean.

Just a thought, good luck with your search!!

I took my son to Emler for years and loved it. Great place! The only reason we don't go there still is there's just too many stop lights between my house and Emler's! :) Good luck.

We did swim lessons at the YMCA. They were very nice and helpful, but they didn't feel like my 18 month old daughter could learn to swim. It was all water accomadation (which she was already good at). They also had like 4 classes going on at once in the same pool. It was very loud, chaotic, and very COLD!!!!
We have looked into Elmer and have heard nothing but good things. A friends of mine chose Elmer ove rthe YMCA b/c they didn't have all of there classes scheduled at once. She dais it was a great learning environment and they also believe that younger toddlers can be tought to swim. Good luck!

Plano Parks and Recreation offers swim classes at several locations throughout Plano. (I think that there is an aquatic center on Custer.) Go to their website and look around.

We did the YMCA lessons and I really was not impressed! Last year we took our child to aschooloffish.com.. We were blown away! We are taking her for round 2 this year! Very reasonable... and amazing! They had her getting rings on the 2nd day at the bottom of the pool! She was only 3! Amazing!

J.,

I currently take my 4 year old (now almost 5) to Emler and have been very happy. I only take him once a week, but I know they will be starting up the 4 day a week classes for the summer soon. I had tried the YMCA last summer and my son hated it. The water was too cold and I'm not sure why, but he was pretty intimidated by the big pool, and he LOVES the water. After that I decided to try Emler since my older two had gone there as well. Not to say the YMCA doesn't have a good program, but my son just didn't like it for some reason at that time. I've been taking him to Emler for about the last year, once a week.

Besides Lifetime Fitness (121/Lake Forest) and YMCA, the McKinney High School pool offers lessons in the summer and used to offer them year round (not sure about that now w/ 3 high schools using the pool tho). I have taken my girls there and been satisfied. I've also used Swim Plus down in Plano. I was very pleased with their approach to swimming and to teaching the kids.

J. - My kids took lessons from Cindy Clark (who also posted a response) last year, and it worked out very well. Cindy was very good with the kids. My son is very cautious by nature, and did not like to put his head in the water most of the time, and by the end of lessons he was swimming and floating across the length of the pool. I would definitely recommend Cindy!
