We will be moving to NY in the next few months and are trying to figure out where to live. The major factor in where we purchase is the school district. What are some great school districts on Long Island? I've tried greatschools.net but the website does not rate all of the schools.

Any suggestions?

Thank you so much!

We are in Harborfields SD. My daughter is in 2nd grade & its been great so far. FYI: K-2nd grade is one school, 3rd-6th is another, 7-9th Junior high & 10th-12th is the High School. We live in Greenlawn & its a very family-oriented friendly town. Everything is so close (post office, banks, food, dry cleaners, supermarket, gas, parks, train sta., drug stores) & we have a small village in town that nice to walk around in.

Hi D.,
The best is Jericho but houses are very expensive. Some parts of Westbury can go into Jericho schools but a lot of people after those houses.
We live in Franklin Square, Schools District 17. It is very good and that was our deciding factor as well, a good schoold district and the houses are around 450K. Herricks 9 is even better and the houses are around 600K.
When you go into school reports card on the internet you can see how each school is rated on reading and math so on so forth.
About 1.5 ago there was an article on either daily news or newsday about Franklin Sqare 17 school district. The article was saying that 17 was the best district you get for your money. meaning the money you spent on the house and the kind of school you get.
Good Luck

I believe the number school district on Long Island is Cold Spring Harbor which is in Nassau County. Another great one is Jericho School District which is also Nassau County. In Suffolk county, Harborfields is excellent, Half Hollows West, is great and Commack school district is also in the tops. Good luck! K.

Hi, I live in Islip Long Island and both my husband and I have for all of our lives. We have a fantastic school district. The Wing School is just Kindergarten and 1st grade. Then there are 2 Elementary schools, middle school and high school. The district has been won many awards and has a very involved and supportive PTA. Check out islipufsd.org. good luck!

There are so many good districts on Long Island! As a teacher and a parent we can sometimes be misled by all of the media attention on certain schools. Also, it comes down to the amount of money that you have available to spent on a home. Some of the districts mentioned may be 'untouchable' due to housing prices and taxes, etc. Some of the smaller districts in more reasonable areas may be Wantagh, Plainedge, Plainview-Old Bethpage, Bethpage, to name a few. So many school districts have wonderful technology initiatives. Getting a teaching job on Long Island is extremely competitive...which translates into most schools hiring teachers that tend to be highly qualified with many professional development courses under their belts. Good luck!

Hi D.,

There are so many good school districts on Long Island. You need to really think about what exactly you are looking for. I am a teacher and have taught in both Jericho and Half Hollow Hills. The reason Jericho schools are so highly ranked is due to very high taxes and the fact that most students have a tutor in every subject area (I tutor as well). Half Hollow Hills is more diverse and more balanced. Other people recommended Cold Spring Harbor and Harborfields (where I live), both good choices. If you want more specific information you can contact me at ____@____.com. I've been teaching a long time and have many friends that teach all over Long Island.

Good luck!

Oyster Bay, Locust Valley, Oceanside, Massapequa, Syssot, Cold Spring Harbor, Carle Place Jericho, Great Neck North & South, Garden City, and Roslyn.

Good Luck!

We are in Deer Park but go to Half Hollow Hills school district. It is very good. I'd heard great things about it before we moved here. I think everyone will be partial to their districts so maybe ask people if they know any they would absolutely not want...narrow it down some for you.
I haven't grown up here so I don't have the experience you need.
Good luck!!

Hi D.,

I know I'm a little late in responding to this request, but I live in Woodbury, and the Syosset school district is great (it encompasses both Woodbury and Syosset). It is not as highly ranked as Jericho, but still very impressive nevertheless.
