Hi Moms,
I need suggestions. Since my daughter was a little baby she has used my hair as her security blanket. She's now 22 months and still needs my hair to fall asleep. Due to some health issues early on I almost encouraged it seeing as it brought her comfort. Now I need a substitute. I got this hair extension ponytail but she gets it so tangled its a mess and then she just throws it. I need something soft and tangle proof. Any ideas????

What can I do next?

You don't want "hair" getting wrapped around a finger and cutting off her circulation while she is sleeping. Time for a safe substitute!

I totally agree with Julie S. My goodness. Time for her to have another lovey. Just do it. It's like having to wean from a bottle and paci. You may have a week or two of difficulty, but just do it. Offer her substitutes. Teddy bears are nice...

Time to accept it wasn't a good idea and correct.

22 months is old enough to start learning different methods to self soothe. Kids are resilient, we adults don't like to consider that. Rather than make ourselves feel bad we convince ourselves that it is the child who cannot change. That is silly. So do your daughter a favor and knock off the hair thing. God knows what her poop looks like

Buy her a doll. American Girl style dolls have nice hair, she can bring it to bed (in PJs, no less!), and in the morning she can brush her hair. Bonus: If she decides she needs to carry her doll around, nobody is going to think it odd. As opposed to a grungy looking hank of knotted up hair. Ick.

Good luck.

It sounds like she needs something soft to stroke. There are special blankets that have "tags" all around the edges, rows of soft, silky tags for a baby or toddler to feel and rub. Search online for "baby tag blankets" or "baby tab blankets" and you will find loads of sites showing how to make them and some sites for just buying them. This one on Amazon shows what they look like:
http://www.amazon.com/Pink-Gray-Chevron-Baby-Blanket/dp/B...
These might be a good change and could distract her with some new tactile sensations that will help her forget the hair. I really would not put a product like hair extensions into a toddler's bed or crib. I'd get several of the tag blankets and have them in places like her bed, her car seat, wherever she plays a lot during the day, so she gets used to exploring them.

Hair extensions sound like something that could tangle around her limbs or neck and be uncomfortable at best and maybe unsafe at worst And if she starts sucking on or mouthing the hair, she could end up with pieces in her mouth -- not good. Those extensions aren't made to be handled a lot like that or put in her mouth. Even if she didn't put your hair into her mouth before, with a child her age, things start to be sucked on or chewed, so I'd really avoid any kind of fake hair.

My daughter went to sleep while playing with ears. It didn't matter whose ear it was any ear would do. After I stopped rocking her to sleep the need for ear play went away. I couldn't find or think of a substitute for an ear so she just had to deal with not having it. She got over it pretty fast. Every now and then when she's sitting with me and is sleepy she will grab my ear. She will notice she's doing it and will stop. Good luck!!!

Hi A.L. Try going to a fabric shop, take her with you, and see if they have any faux fur material where the fur is long enough to substitute. You can get her input and maybe find something that will suffice. Was the hair extension human hair or synthetic. If it was synthetic, perhaps the previous suggestion of a doll with hair might do. She might even like a doll like a raggedy ann with yarn for hair. Just throwing things out there. Good luck. I'm sure she'll be fine in such attentive and loving hands. S

My son is 4 and still loves to play with my hair, so I completely understand! I got so tired of getting my hair pulled!! But now, it is actually sweet. The best sub l found was the Waldorf style dolls with the long, mohair yarn hair. My hair is very curly, so this sub was ok with my kiddo.

Aolright it's not the same as a human, but the cat really likes a furry bathrobe I have. Sometimes it's just the softness of it. I didn't try it on a real baby though.

Talk to her, and go on a "lovey hunt". Perhaps there is a stuffed animal or something- maybe even a doll with long hair.
