Need Eye Doctor

My daughter is 7 and is complaining that she can't see the board. I'm not really surpised, both my husband and I have contacts. However, money is VERY tight for us right now, and our health insurance is major medical only. So, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a free or reduced eye dr. that provides QUALITY care.

What can I do next?

I was in the same situation though my daughter broke her glasses. I wasn't able to afford to get new ones for a couple months. The school contacted me and arrange for the Lion's club to pay for the exam and glasses. I live in Independence and it was the Fort Osage school district. I hope this helps.

I would check with the nurse at her school. There may even be some programs to help out. If anyone would know, she probably would.

S.,

That's funny, right before I read you question I had finished reading this article: http://www.slate.com/id/2198746/ that explains that you can get good quality glasses online for much less than in an eye doctor's office. You still have to go to an eye doctor to get a prescription, of course, but you save a lot on the glasses themselves by buying them online. I don't have an eye doctor to recommend, but just remember that you don't always have to buy your glasses from them just because you get the prescription from them. You can get good quality glasses online for a much better price. BTW, the writer of the article is independent of any online glasses retailer, so he stands to gain nothing by writing about them. I need new glasses too and am going to try one of the links he mentions in his article.

Good luck!

I am a teacher in Raytown. I am not sure if all schools are doing it or not but Score 1 for Health is coming to our school soon. They check all of the kids hearing, dental, and sight. Then the results get sent to the parents. SO this is a free option. call your school nurse. THey will know. Then I wonder if you can take those results to get glasses-I know walmart has good glasses and they arent a ton of money. NOt sure if you are a member of Costco but they do eye exams and I think even cheap or free ones for school age kids. I just got glasses there and they were cheap! 2x less then the eye doc place.....

I have always used America's Best for my kids. You get two pair of glasses and if you do not add any extra you can get them for $69.99 including the eye exam. You usually ahve to wait forever, even with an appointment, but it is worth it for the price.

Jill is right, your school nurse should have a list for the Raytown area. Just be prepared, you may have to give some financial information.

Good luck!

I would have the school nurse screen her vision first- though it probably is going to indicate that she needs further testing.

I don't have any specific doctors to recommend BUT would encourage you to call around. And tell them you will be self pay...My eye doctor charged about 20% less for 'self pay' (costs them less b/c they didn't have to spend time/money processing insurance claims)
