I am officially starting the gym on monday! I am looking for any suggestions/advice to help me loose weight (looking for about 30 pounds) and also need an hour workout routine! My son will be coming with me to the kids room so about an hour is all I have! Thanks in advance for your input! Hopefully 2008 is the year for me!

What can I do next?

Have you got a diet plan too? I ended up buying a bunch of work out videos off of e-bay and joining weight watchers on-line and lost 30 lbs. The beauty is that I never had to leave my house and it was pretty affordable!

Cuves. I love it and it really works. I go four times a week for about 40 minutes, but the say you only have to go 3 x a week for 30 minutes.

About 7 years ago I got back into the excersize routine after being out of it for years! I started going to aerobics classes because at first I found that if I was on my own I'd talk myself into leaving and not get all of the work I knew I needed done! I figured if I were in a class there would be some sort of accountability and I wouldn't be so quick to leave! I started going to a cardio kick-boxing class that would be just that for 40 minutes and then 20 minutes of free weights. For the first month or so I was huffing and puffing and didn't think I'd get through it - I was sore - oh so sore (and I was only 23 at the time). About 6 weeks into it I found I could get through the class fine and was really enjoying it. I think you need to find a class or an excersize you can enjoy and then there is more chance of staying with it. Best of luck to you!

Hi S.. I am also a mom of a 2 year old and a personal trainer. I know how hard it is to make time for yourself and leave your 2 year old. If you want to lose weight you need to do a lot of cardio. I don't know how much weight you are needing to lose or what kind of shape you are in so my recomendation is to focus your time (at least 30min) staying in motion. If there is a track available use it. If all you can do or want to do is walk grab some 5lb. weights and walk. Use the tread mill or the bike. The best cario is swimming. If you can swim for 30 min. that would be great (swimming for 30min. is harder than you might think). Keep in mind though that if you haven't been very active in a while anything is going to be difficult to start. If you need to work up to being at the gym for an hour that is fine just spend the 30min of your time on cardio. You can change up which cardio you do to combat bordom. After your 30min move on to some weights. I highly recomend free weights. Most of the machines are not really good for your joints and can do damage in the long run. Have someone at the gym go through all of the machines with you, if you want to use them at least use them properly. Also, look on line for excercises that use the excercise ball or the balance ball (half ball on a disc). Those exercises will focus on your core which is very important. Another thing is get a personal trainer even if you just use them for a short time to help you get into a rutine. I gained 60lbs with my son and it took a year of doing what I suggest about 5 days a week if(I was no where near perfect about going to the gym). Go easy on yourself you should start seeing results in about a month. And you will be sore the fist week. Rember to drink a lot of water. It will help prevent soreness and injury. Good luck...

Make sure you incorporate weights into your routine. It can be a little intimidating rto use the machines or the free weights at first (especially as a woman) but that will really speed weight loss, help you tone up, and firm things up. A muscular woman burns more calories all the time that a woman who runs but does not gain muscle. There is a book called "Body for Life for Women" that explains some very simple weight exercises and I am sure there are others. Also be sure to do at least 30-45 minutes of cardio when you do it- that is the best way to get your body burning fat. Good luck!

Participate in the daily aerobics that they offer, and do at least 30 minutes on whatever cardio machine suits you. Dont hesitate to ask a staff member how to use a machine. After a while, graduallly start lifting weights.
I use the free website www.sparkpeople.com to help me in my goals. IT's a great website full of other supportive people, info, calorie tracking, etc.
In summary, it is how many calories you burn that will help u lose the weight. Start slowly, like 10 minutes at a time, and build your way up. If u do too much, you won'tbe able to move the next day! good luck.

Many gyms provide a few personal training sessions free for joining their gym. Find out if your's does. This way you will have a professional help develop a routine for you so that you can maximize your efforts and meet your goals properly. These sessions usually last about 45 minutes so it should be perfect. If they don't offer it for free, check the price and If reasonable it would be worth the investment. Way to go!

Hi S.,

We just welcomed our first child at the beginning of December & I have been staying sane using The Firm's "Transfirmer" DVDs at home. While we belong to a gym, I just find it's alot easier to have these great workout options at home. I am 1 lb away from my pre-pregnancy weight right now, so the workouts must be effective! I do these in addition to the elliptical and weights a few times a week. I think you can buy the Firm's Transfirmer system at Dicks...

Hope that helps & good luck!

J.
