Google the show "it's the dog or me" The trainer Victoria Stillwell has incredable advice for all kinds of dog issues.
EXAMPLE: when in the car, cover the windows in the back and then suspend a curtain between the front and back. As the driver is driving the passenger raises and lowers the curtain as the dogs are barking and not barking. You start the drive with the curtain down so the dogs can see. As soo as the dogs display any behavior you don't like raise the curtain so the dogs can't see when they stop barking lower the curtain. Be consistant and they will learn that being quiet lets them see.
EXAMPLE: when walking, as soon as you dog gets aggitated, pulls or makes even the slightest noise. you tell them "no!" and turn around and walk in the other direction. When they calm down turn around and continue in the original direction. Be consistant and they will learn that being quiet lets them go for a walk.
It helps to see this in action. I stongly reccomend watching the show. She also uses food treats to reinforce good behavior.
I have used her technics to train our 10 year old Silky Yorkie Terrier and our 2 year old Papillion. She has been a life saver!
Before you use a shock collar to stop the barking put it on yourself, then think about puting on you child to make them use thier "inside voice". If these two things sound insane and you would never dream of doing them, then please do not do this to your dog. Remember that pets are as dependent on us as our children are. What lesson are you teaching to your kids and dog when you use violence to get the result you want?
You can fix this!

Hi D.,
Have you ever watched the tv show "The Dog Whisperer"? Ceasar is awesome with dogs in getting them to stop jumping on people, barking, and aggressive behavior. Maybe by watching a couple of his shows you could learn how to train your dog not to bark. We are currently using some of his techniques to train our dog to stop barking when told and stop jumping up on people. We've seen an improvement. You really have to watch the program to get the gist of his methods...it has to do with you being the leader of the "pack". Puppy stage is the perfect age to start the training.
Good luck.

Hate to say it, but you have 2 recourses. A bark collar is a great tool. I have 3 for 3 very barky dogs. It does NOT hurt them. It just causes a tingle that is unpleasant. If you start a puppy on it, he will learn fairly quickly. Go to the Drs. Foster and Smith web site and read about them. It is humane and a barking dog is NOT. Or, learn techniques for quieting your dog through The Dog Whisperer. You must have patience for those methods he teaches but with 4 dogs all togeather, and a 2 year old, my patience is thin right now. I did use his techniques on my older dog when it was just us and no child or puppies who are now 3. She is a very well behaved Staffordshire Boxer mix now. I personally like the collars as it is less work on my part and they are quite friendly too.

We watch a lot of "Its me or the Dog" with Victoria Stillwell on Animal Planet. She often addresses this issue. You might try going to animalplanet.com, searching for the show, and see if there's any online tips. Otherwise, they should be able to give you show times. :}

Get a tin Can that has a lid so you can close it again.Put little stones in it or something that is loud. Everytime the dog starts to bark,shake it. The loud noise might scare her at first but she will learn everytime she barks that noise will come and she should stop barking.You may also throw it by ( beside) the dog but not at the dog,if the noise alone doesn't help.

My neighbors have 2 great dogs but one barked quite a bit so they trained their dog with a shock collar. I know this sounds a little inhumane but once the dog understands what the collar does (usually after a couple of times), then you can use it still to train the dog without having it "on". It worked for them so it's an idea! Good luck!
