Need Advice on Son's HORRIBLE Eating Habits

My son is turning 2 in a week, and he has the most horrible eating habits. I cannot get him to eat anything besides chicken, pasta, and yogurt. He will not touch vegetables, no matter which ones I try. If I try to feed it to him, he'll clamp his mouth shut and turn his head away. I've tried hiding peas or small pieces of green beans or broccoli in mashed potatoes- he'll eat the potatoes and spit out the veggies. He won't eat fruit, either. My daughter, who is 3, will eat the veggies and leave everything else on her plate, but my son eats everything but. It's very frustrating! He's also a little sugar fiend, and will go to any lengths necessary to get the sweets that I keep out of reach (I'm still trying to figure out how he got the cookies off the top of the fridge!) My husband grew up on an extremely unhealthy diet and I do NOT want my son to have the same habits that my husband is now struggling to break. I bought that cookbook called Deceptively Delicious, where you hide pureed vegetables in otherwise normal foods. I couldn't taste the veggies in any of the recipes, but my son seemed to know, and wouldn't touch anything I made. I'm at my wit's end with this! Help!

Hi S.,
The wife of Jerry Seinfeld is Jessica. She wrote a cook book called “Deceptively Delicious" and it is too cool. She gives recipes that have veggies "hidden" in them. For instance mac and cheese with pureed carrots. My daughter tried this one and her kids COULD NOT EVEN TELL THE DIFFERENCE. She has a recipe for brownies with pureed spinach that you do NOT EVEN TASTE THE SPINACH and the brownies taste like brownies. I have seen the book at wal-Mart and am sure you can find it at your favorite book store also.
I hope this has helped.
God bless you and yours,

I have the same problem with my 5 year old. He gags when I try to get him to eat his veggies. He is getting better about fruit but the veggies are still a challenge. I tried shredding up carrots and putting them in PB&J sandwiches like one book recommended but he knew and wouldn't eat it. I guess I am anxious to see what advice everyone has too. Good luck.

Hi S.,

My son was the same way but after he was two. Before he ate veggies but when he was two he would pick them out of everything. I have the cookbook too but...you have to do what works for your family. If I never made homemade chicken nuggets he wouldn't try them anyway. I made the same things I always do and tried to puree veggies that had a similar flavor. Eventually he grew out of it though. He's still picky but eats some veggies.

My daughter can also seem to spot a vegetable no matter how cleverly disguised. However, when I make pasta dishes such as lasagna, stuffed shells or stuffed ravioli I always put finely chopped spinach in it and she always happily eats it. I suppose it is not as obvious with the pasta sauce.

Also, and this may sound a little gross but is actually pretty good. I make low-fat yougurt smoothies for her and some times I puree a small amount of veggies into the smoothie...usually carrots or spinach depending on what else I am putting in there.

I also have the same cookbook and have had some success with it. However, even when I "hide" vegetables I still put vegetables on her plate so she recognizes that they are still part of a healthy meal. There are some great resources around...especially the internet.
