Need Advice on Private Speech Therapy in Austin

My son's speech was delayed and he received therapy from ECI (Infant-Parent Program) until aging out at age 3. The ECI therapy was helpful, as it did help him combine words into sentences as well as say some multi-syllable words (these were big issues before therapy). However, although he has improved, his speech is still hard to understand a lot of the time and I would like to pursue further therapy. He was tested for the school district program (Pflugerville ISD) in April and did not qualify for services. Does anyone have any recommendations of therapists that they have used? Thanks - D.

I would go through your insurance company to see who is in network. Private speech costs up to $2 per minute. If your insurance will help with that, then I would start with their list.

Hi D. - I do not have advice - I have a question - I have a son - 2yrs, 4mos old and he is speech delayed too. He was recently diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. I am sure I will need to get him a speech therapist. What is this you are referring to - ECI? - can anyone get this? I have not heard of it.

This may help - my son was diagnosed at Milestones Children's Center, which is on Whitestone/1431, just across from the new Target/Academy stores, just past 183A. They also have speech therapists. I have not worked with these therapists but have worked with two occupational therapists - I do like this place - you may want to give them a try.

Good luck - I am sure you will get loads of info from your inquiry here - this is such a great site!

Thanks, Alli

Our son is in speech and occupational therapy at Milestone's in Cedar Park. They have a south location as well. He has only been in for 3 months and we have seen HUGE improvements in both areas. www.milestonestherapy.com. Good luck.

Hi, my son received speech from a place called Little Tesoros... They are up north on 183 and Burnet... I liked the therapists, but their billing was a bit messed up.. Also, when my son went, he was having all sorts of other problems and it just wasn't working out... I ended up with ECI as well. Good luck...

Dear D. S.

We used Live Oak Center for Communication Disorders. They are in Central Austin, 38th & Jefferson. They have a lot of wonderful speech pathologist.

My oldest son (now age 8, adopted at birth) was unable to see the relationship between letters and words - phoentic awareness - when he finished kindergarten. He also had trouble with the letter "R" and the letter "L". We worked with Kari for 9 months and now his is reading above grade level (he is a straight A student in the 3rd grade).

I hope this helps.

I have a colleague who does therapy in the home, at your leisure. She also takes most insurances! She is a speech path for Austin Independent School District, so she is very familiar with the woes of the public school system!!! You should call her if you are still looking for an SLP. She is incredible. Her name is Susannah Amiss ###-###-####.
