Need Advice on Growing Our Perm

Whenever I need to grow my hair out for any reason, I resort to hair hardware. I come up with a few cute styles and just rock them out, while it grows. Maybe a cute ponytail, half up half down, a little poof in the front with some pieces pulled out around the face....just play with it and see how it goes. I actually have a grown out style now and have to do the old pony tail, bobby pin drill daily. But it keeps it out of my face and looks pretty cute. So that for me is the easiest, cheapest and healthiest option till I can make my next style move. Good luck!! Be careful that if you do it yourself, that you know what kind of perm/chemicals was used on your hair... or your hair can get damaged/break... or fried.
Not all perm/relaxing perms are compatible.

I've straightened a perm by using another perm, without the rollers.

You'd do the same basic process. You'd apply the perm solution (the stinky stuff) to your hair and comb it straight. I combed it several times during this procedure, to ensure it wasn't curling back up. I don't think you'd have to leave it on quite as long to straighten, as you would to curl. You want to avoid damaging your hair as much as possible.

Then RINSE.

Then you need to follow the perm directions and NEUTRALIZE. You still need to neutralize your hair to get what's left of the perm solution in your hair to be neutrailzed, or quit working. Put the neutralizer on your hair, and comb straight some more.

Then RINSE.

This will get your hair straight. You might find your hair feels slightly damaged, like after getting a perm, but it shouldn't be too bad. I'd get a good deep moisturizing conditioner, maybe even a leave-in conditioner, to help with any residual dryness. If you hair is basically healthy now and not too dry, you should have no problems.

There are chemical free relaxers that hair dressers use. Ask you hair dresser and I'm sure he/she will know.

I got a bad perm once, and hated it. I bought a perm from the store made for damaged hair. We put in the perm solution and my Mom ran a comb through continuously until it stayed straight, and than we used the deactivator and rinsed. It took the perm out and did very little damage, nothing more than the occasional deep conditioner could not take care of.

You don't want to straighten it with another perm, especially not one over the counter. Check for a relaxer, but if you want to keep your hair healthy I would go to a salon and see if they can relax it for you. Professional products used at salons tend to be less harsh than the stuff you buy over the counter. Also make sure to use a good shampoo and conditioner for chemically treated hair to keep breakage at a minimum. I would suggest Pantene, but everyones hair is different so you may have to check around to see what works best for you.

REmember the more chemicals you use the more likely there will be drying and breakage and you also run the rick of some hair falling out. If you aren't ready to cut it all off, then I would strongly recommend a salon!

I do not know what kind of hair you have but I buy a home perm and use the stinky solution to comb my hair straight (the same way African American ladies comb their perm through.) I usually leave it on less time to straighten than to curl but it depends on your hair texture. Use a conditioning pack next time you wash. I do not have a lot of patience for growing out a perm nor a lot of money to go have it straightened. I just do it myself and have used this trick 4 times over the last 10 years. Good luck to you.

you can pay to have it straightened. When I want straight hair the next day (I've been perming since high school, but occasionally I want straight hair), before I take my shower I brush it all out, then comb it with a wide tooth comb while it's wet, then blow dry it a little bit, then comb it again, then sleep on it. it's not as much hassle as it sounds like, and it usually works out pretty well.

I'd cut it short and let it grow out.

You are going to let it grow out anyway, and short hair is a LOT less hassle than trying to make half-permed long hair look good. I would NOT have the time OR the energy for that! I'd rather use the extra 20-45 minutes for a nap! : )

Go to a stylist you really like and explain what you want out of the cut. Good luck!

its been a LONNG time but i think my perm kind of faded out. like the curls werent as curly. you can also blow dry it flat. i would not use the perm kit and no curlers untill you spoke with a professional. what if it makes it all frizzy or hay like??? you dont want to damage your hair.

Go to your hairdresser. There is a solution that they can use to take the perm out. Good luck.
