Need Advice for Severe PMS Symptoms

For the past couple of years, I have experienced terrible PMS for 7-10 days before my period. It seems to get worse every year. It's not really physical, but emotional. I get severely irritated, anxious, hopeless, and it is starting to affect my daily life on these days. I have no patience with my children and my husband and I always end up not speaking or arguing because I get so angry with him. I don't know if what I have is severe enough to be PMDD, but I would like to find out. My obgyn is primarily an ob. Most of her practice is delivering babies and would like to find a doctor where this isn't the case. I have tried changing my diet, exercise, Yaz birth control pills and am currently taking medication the week before my period to help eleviate these symptoms, but I hate taking lots of medicine if there are other alternatives. Anyone else have symptoms like mine? Or do you have any advice about what to try next? I hate to think I have to live with being like this for a week or two each moth for many years to come. Thanks!

I have PMDD and I take Zoloft and it has changed my life!!!

I also have polycystic ovarian syndrome and so my mood swings are terrible and i can tell if i go a day or 2 with out my "happy pills" :o)

One of the nurses that I worked with swore by rice milk. I personally couldn't drink it but she said it was great. The other thing I would do is go to your family doctor. They are often a wealth of information and can direct you to a good solution. I might also google PPMD and natural remedies. Good luck!

Have your labs done, make sure your testosterone, free testosterone and DHEA levels are within range. Don't forget to have the estrogen/progest checked. These hormones make a huge difference in your "normal" levels. At one point I had to take DHEA and testosterone to normalize me. Now if I need it, I use a natural progest creme. I feel so normal and really owe a lot to the allergist who made me do the labwork. M.

I would urge you to switch from cow's milk to either rice or almond. If you insist on staying with cow's milk then I would suggest switching to strictly organic. Other things that have helped me are: give up carbonated drinks (they cause unnecessary bloating, cramps, etc.), eat healthier (try to encorporate foods that have natural digestive enzymes like fresh fruits/veggies), and EXERCISE. This will decrease your period and the cramping.

my pms has gotten out of hand too - my OB suggested B6 twice a day, Tums calcium for life (or any calcium - calcium is proven to reduce PMS), Vitamin E, and a well balanced diet - watch your carbs - eat lots of fresh fruits, veggies and lean protein. EXERCISE!!!!!

It is a fact that PMS gets worse as you get older. I have seen an improvement in my symptoms with the vitamin therapy.

Have you tried progesterone cream? If you are not trying to get pregnant any time soon, I would highly suggest it. When I used it, it helped my moods and helped me sleep better. I also suggest getting off all caffiene.

Also, we found that birth control pills were affecting me that way. So I no longer take the pill. I use the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility to monitor my cycles and prevent/acheive pregnancy.

Hi Carolyn,
Sorry to hear about your PMS. Mine too has gotten worse over the past few years. May I ask your age? Could you be perimenopausal? If you are your PMS can get really bad during this time. I have tried many different natural products and none seem to really help me. I hate to admit but I end up using Prozac about 3 days a month. I really wanted something natural but I also wanted my family to be sane. ") I use it the day after I ovulate (I can feel it when it happens) and the for the next few days. It seems to help me get through the hormonal "transitional" stage and then I'm fine for the remainder of the time. It was the only thing I found helpful for my moodiness. If I took it for 5 days or longer I did become fussy brained and forgetful. I chose Prozac over the other antidepressants because it's been around longer and it had more history of users. Some of the natural stuff helped relieve some of the physical stuff but not the emotional.
