Need Advice for Flat Spot on Child's Head

My 3 and a half month old daughter has a flat spot on one side of her head. I have tried switching sleeping positions, rolling up a receiving blanket to put under one side at night, and a head boppy (to prevent flat spots). The doctor says it will start correct itself when she starts to crawl but I still want to make sure I am doing everything I can to help it correct as fast as it can. If anyone has any helpful advice, it would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

M....
I used to "Shape" my kids heads myself...Literally, with my hands. I would hold them and shape their heads like a grapefruit by molding the spot gently everyday without fail. I never heard of anyone doing it but it worked for me. My kids are now 16, 14 & 5, perfectly shaped heads and all.:-)
Good Luck!!!

Continue what your doing by letting her sleep on her side. During the day when you can watch her you can let her sleep on her tummy. Brittany got a flat spot on the back of her head and once I started paying attention to how much time she was spending on her back I was more aware and would let her play on her tummy. Now she prefers to sleep on her back and the flat spot is gone. It took about a month before the spot started to improve.

tummy time.. She won't like it at first but start slowly. Give her 5 mins at a time then work her way up. She'll start to like tummy time. I think that is wny my daughter rolled early and crawled early. She loved being on her tummy once she got used to it.

Good luck!

As frustrating as it seems, your doctor is likely correct. 3 1/2 months is still very young and the skull is still very flexible. As she grows and becomes more mobile her skull shape will normalize. If you are truly concerned that there may be a problem, ask you doctor to order an xray to rule out any abnormalities. This is really not necessary if the baby is thriving and growing and otherwise meeting developmental milestones.

Hang in there...it's just easier to see her skull shape without hair to cover it up. If all of us went around bald, we have a much better sense of humor about life because head shapes are very weird!! This will all be forgotten by her first birthday!!

ok here i go.
when my son was 1st born his soft spot was grown up. i have a great doctor so they were right on it at 4 months old we had taken him to childrens hospital for surgery.
this may not at all be what is wrong but please bring it up to your doctor.

other wise what the other moms have added will most likely work.

good luck, T.

My son used to love looking at black and white (and red) shapes, etc., so I made a bunch and would place them where he could see them. He would turn his head to which ever side the picture was placed.

I made the pictures in PowerPoint, but any program would work. It's great for eye development, too.
