Need Advice for Daughter Who Won't Drink Milk Out of a Sippy Cup

A week and a half ago I decided to not let my 19 mo. daughter drink from her bottle anymore. She will drink juice from a sippy cup, but not milk. So she hasn't had even an ounce of milk in a week and a half. The only reason I let her have her bottle before was so that she would get some milk. My ped knows about this and she said sometimes it will take them two or three weeks before they'll drink milk from the cup. Has anyone ever had this problem before? My doctor said she should be drinking 20 oz. of fluid a day. I know she doesn't drink that many ounces. I'm trying to give her orange juice that's fortified with calcium so she can get some calcium. I also give her YoBaby yogurt and cheese. Anyone have any suggestions for foods that babies might like that are high in calcium? Or suggestions on how to get her to drink milk? I've tried every kind of sippy cup and she's really stubborn!

What can I do next?

My neice went through the same problem. Would drink other drinks from a sippy cup, but not milk. For her, she was breastfed and would only associate that with milk, not a cup. Her pediatrician finally said to only give milk in the sippy cup and nothing else. Eventually she would cave in and drink it that way. It only took 3 days. She was not dehydrated or anything and has had no problems since. The pediatricain called what she was doing a silent protest and said she would give in when she saw that the milk was going to be in the cup only and that until she drank the milk she would not get any of her other drink choices. Maybe this will work for you. Good Luck!

Calcium comes from many sources (veggies like broccoli). Milk is a very acid food and the calcium in the milk is used to buffer the acid. I was lactose intollerant and never drank milk. Water is necessary. Everyone shoud drink half their body weight in ounces, i.e., weigh 50 lbs. drink 25 ounces of pure water per day - other liquids do not count.

What about just trying a different type of cup-some kids love cups with straws, or even try just putting a dribble of milk in a sippy cup and seeing what she does with it? 2 of my 3 are very stubborn and all those transitions are tough. Hang in there!

My boys are the same way. They will only drink out of a cup with a straw. It's much like sucking a bottle, so I think they find that comforting. On the flip side, they'll have nothing to do with a "tippy cup". They don't comprehend that you have to tip it in order to drink it. Try a sippy cup with a straw. I, too, have purchased (in double) every kind of sippy cup out there. This is the only one that will work.

NEITHER of my young kids would/will drink milk from a sippy cup. I think they think that milk only belongs in a bottle or something. We finally got our son to drink it from a Nuby cup with a silicone spout since it's close to a bottle, but he still won't drink it from a cup (he's 3) or any other sippy cup. My 19 mo. old daughter still gets a bottle of milk. She's my second, and I just don't care that much about all the "shoulds" and "should nots" that we're bombarded with in articles and books and all that! :) She will not use a bottle for anything else. She uses a sippy for water and juice. And she's not dependent on the bottle as a comfort or attachment, so I'll just keep letting her have her milk in a bottle for awhile.

Try getting her yogurt drinks, they have Dora and Diego on them. You can always hold it so she can drink out of the container or let her see you pour it into the sippy cup and she may drink it.

Sorry I never had any problems with my son drinking from a sippy cup as he was a breastfed baby and went from breast to bottle, to sippy, to regular cup and he drinks from the containers as well.

Some babies dont like to give up that bottle.

Actually you can try buying a different sippy cup its like a bottle nipple its called NUBY.

My daughter is 12 months and has been drinking water from a sippy cup but not milk. I tried several different kinds of sippy cups and nothing worked. Finally I went straight to a regular cup and even though I have to hold it for her so she doesn't spill it all over herself, she took the milk!!

Neither of my girls wanted anything from the sippy cup! It was difficult to switch them so instead of trying to transition, we just went cold turkey. My oldest didn't drink anything for 2 days and then she was a sippy drinker only now she wants nothing to do with a regular cup!

Anyway, you could try yogurt drinks like someone else suggested or my girls really like strawberry milk or sometimes when I don't want the yogurt pots to go to waste when the kids aren't going to eat them I mix those with milk. Just don't give your child anything other than milk in a sippy cup and no bottles. She'll get thirsty and drink it!
