Need a Tutu- Make or Buy?

My 3 year old needs a tutu for ballet class. From what I have seen, they are pretty easy to make and I am not interested in spending $20 to buy one. Question is, if I can order one off Amazon for about $5, can I even make it that cheaply? If so, where is the best place to get the supplies and the easiest way to do it?

What can I do next?

For a 3 year old, you could make it cheaply. However, it wouldn't be more then a dollar or two cheaper. Might as well save the time, at that point. UNLESS, you want a better color or fullness. You can buy a spool of tulle with a 40% coupon for Joanns or Michaels (if you have those) and some elastic by the yard.

Look up tutu tutorials. A simple one consists of a band of elastic and tying the strips of tulle in knots at the top. (Buy the tulle on a spool, NOT a bolt.

It's really easy to make. I made one for myself since I was in need of one for Halloween and it cost me maybe $5. I live in Los Angeles and right by the fabric district. Hope this video helps, if not there are tons to watch.

I made my daughter one for Halloween for 15$, but she is a baby, and I found the tulle and other supplies @ a dollar store. Her birthday one I'm making has cost about 25$ so far, and only because I'm ordering tulle. I say spend the 20$ and buy it.

Just buy it. They sell them ALL over the place these days in my area. We have a place in our Mall that sells only tutu's and sparkly wand and tiaras.
Heck, Shopko and Walmart have them even...Shopko has a whole 'ballerina/tap' section, with the leotards, bodysuits and ballet flats and tutus.

I keep seeing all these cute tutus at Target and Walmart for $10. I'd just buy her one, it's probably cheaper since tulle is expensive!

I don't think you can make one for $5. In fact, I don't think could probably make it cheaper than like $10-15 and at that point, I'd just buy one for $20.

Hello :-)

I recently made one for my daughter and while they're not hard to make tulle is expensive. Pinterest has some "how-to's" if you do want to make it. After making mine, I think the store bought would have been much easier and probably close to the same price. You might also check consignment stores....

I've made a tutu twice now for my granddaughters. It was easy to make but did cost more than $5. And mine did not look nearly as sharp as the purchased ones do.

Supplies for a tutu. Netting, elastic, ribbon, thread. Perhaps the cost was close to $5. I didn't need as much netting as I bought.

If I were to make one again, I'd spend more time looking at a well made one in the store and try to copy it. I just assumed all it took were several layers of net fabric. How many layers. Mine looked flat. I did find some elasticized ribbon which made the waist prettier. I still used elastic, sewed that on the waist and then covered it with the elasticized ribbon which I had to sew on by hand. I think sewing on the regular ribbon after sewing on the elastic would've been easier. Regular ribbon is less bulky too. Just stretch the elastic while sewing on the ribbon.

The ones that you buy are nicer material and softer than the cheap tulles in the fabric store. I just looked at this, and believe me, its better to buy one at the store. Target has some bright pink ones on clearance for under $5, at least mine did. Also, the regular price at like Fred Meyers was only about $12. We have been looking for our 3 year old as well.

Toulle is expensive. I'd just buy one.
