Also, if it's mostly addition and subtraction he needs help with, be sure he adds and subtracts actual objects (to get experience with what adding and subtracting really is) as well as repetitive drill on the facts. If you let him set his own goal for a # of facts he can answer in, say 1 minute, he may find it motivating to try to continuously improve, especially if he gets to pick rewards for when he reaches his goals. Have fun!!

K.-
I am also a stay at home mom, but I used to be an elementary school teacher. I taught for 7 years before staying at home. Currently, I do private tutoring sessions at night and on the weekends. I teach using a lot of manipulatives and variety of techniques to make objectives more clear to my students. I live in Hurst and would be happy to tutor if you would like.

Hi! I don't have great advice for right now but when your son gets to multiplication in 3rd grade, i love the TIMEZ ATTACK game on-line. I think it is at www.bigbrainz.com/online. The maker of this game is available at ###-###-#### and I would bet they have a game for addition too. My son loved it because it plays like a video game and has cool graphics. I love that it tracks which problems your child is having difficulty with and teaches while you play. Most of the on-line games i have found just have random problems that pop up and don't actually teach the method to complete them. This one you have to pick up snails and throw them at a door while you are multiplying so if you were working on 4x7, it would make you throw seven snails and the game would say 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28. Then you will tell the computer the answer(that you should know from just hearing it) and the door will open to an Ogre that you get to knock over when you get the answer correct. Sorry for the long answer but i like this as a mother of 5 boys. Good luck to you.

You could check out www.time4learning.com and use the math portion. You can choose 2nd grade and that will give him access to 1st and 3rd stuff. Try it free for 14 days to see if he even likes it. My 7 y/o boy loves it-- animation and time on the computer. You can pick and choose which things to do and then his reward is some virtual playground time. There are a lot of parental controls that is why I like it.

We like math wrap ups to practice math facts as well if that is a need.

I taught sixth and seventh grade math and we recommended this as a site for practice. Many of the games were fun so the kids enjoyed the math practice.
