Need a New Vacuum Cleaner -- Which One Is the Best?

My dyson is slowly breaking down (parts are cracking, now there is a hole in the tubing). I really don't want another dyson....don't like the one I have very much.

Any recommendations?? Would love to stay under $300.

We do not have any pets (and most likely never will), but have 4 kids that can make a good mess.

What can I do next?

Everybody I know that has a dyson has a problem with their vacuum. No offense to Dyson lovers that I don't know. I LOVE my Hoover! I have a Hoover self-propelled vacuum that uses a bag, I've had it for 5 years now and it's probably the best vacuum I've ever owned. I like throwing away the bag and not revisiting all of the junk I vacuumed up from my carpets. If you visit sears they usually have them all set up so you can try them out and pick the one you like. My previous hoover was a cheapo from Wal-mart $70 and lasted for 15 years.

I have the very basic "Oreck" and I LOVE it. I have had it for about 12 yrs.
We've only had to replace 2 or 3 belts. I will completely 100% buy another Oreck when mine dies. :)

Good Luck!!

Really? I absolutely love my Dyson and would buy another in a heartbeat! But haven't had any problems with mine in the 5-6 years I've had it.

I have a Bosch canister that I'm really happy with. Its quiet and very powerful. It has adjustments for carpet level and all the attachments. Not sure how much they run. I got mine for $50 from an employee.

I've got a Kenmore canister vac, and my mom has always had Kenmores. I even also have her very old Kenmore that still works! The newer ones just have more features :) They have a HEPA filter. Mine has a "pet mate" for doing stairs and furniture. Love it :)

Just looked at the Sears site, they have some for $284.20. They get pretty pricey after that. I think I bought mine when it was on sale in the store.

If you order online, you can also find a $5 off coupon here: http://dealcoupon.com/Sears-Coupons.html

I have a kenmore. Im on my second one in 24 years! Cant beat those odds. I have a canister and love it. It comes with a stair attachment that I cant live without. If you buy it at sears you can get a service contract and they clean it free once or twice a year and change out all the filters for free. I have tried others for my upper and lower levels thinking I dont want to haul it up or down but they have always broken very quickly, I call them throw a way vacs.

We got a "shark" which is a knock-off something and have been very happy with it. It's small and light, but still cleans the heck out of the carpet. We got it at BJ's for about $185.

You should find out what is covered under your dyson warranty if you have one. I can't imagine they aren't wanting to help with those little things. I have one too, and would be really sad if mine took a dump in less than 5-7 years.

Check out consumreports.org. You get a membership for 1 month for 5.95. I have a Ricar and I love it. It's lightweight and does carpet and hard floors. Altough the suction on it is very strong and if you have carpet with long threads, it will take some muscle to vac it. I love mine though. I've had it for 6 yrs and consumer rpts rated it the best light weight vac when the year I got it.

I have a Bissell healthy home vacuum and it works better than any I've ever had. My mom has a Dyson and her experience is like yours my Bissell works better than her dyson and it was half the price.
It's a little heavy but SO worth it.

Here is the one I have

I like my Hoover Windtunnel. I've had it over a year & still going strong. Had to change the belt once because I guess I had the vaccum level to low to the carpet.

Hello!
We got a Eureka Boss SmartVac Petlover little over a year ago after going over consumer websites and comments for a few weeks and we really like it. We have cats and the "pet paw" attachment is really great for all the cat hair on furniture. You might find a use for it in tight spaces or carpeted stairs where you still want some spinning brush action. We got ours at Costco for under $150. The only con I can think of is that it is a little heavy. If you have a long stair case and need to lug it up and down a lot, maybe this is not so great, but if yours is a single level , I would highly recommend it.
After having a bagless Hoover before this one, I really appreciate having a bag in this one again. The bagless canister was just such a mess to empty every time....
Good luck!

I love my ORECK!! I have had it at least 8 years and it has not broken down once. I have had every other name brand bagless vacuum at my preschool and in the three years I own the school I think I am on my third one. Oreck is amazing!! It is so lightweight, it isn't bagless but that is okay. Trust me the extra money is sooo worth it because it lasts forever.

I LOVE my Oreck. The price is great and though it doesn't have all the bells and whistles it works constantly and consistently. Even worked on a house that hadn't been vacuumed in almost a year..it is fantastic and it never breaks

We have a Eureka Boss. Spent a little over $100 at Costco (it was on sale and free shipping). All the reports I found were good and I have been very pleased. It hasn't ever really mattered it seems if we get a really nice vacuum or a cheaper one. After about 5 years it is shot. So I figured I might as well spend less money ad I am much happier with it than the $400 Hoover we had.
We would have gotten an Oreck if we had more money to spend on one at the time.
