Need a New Swimsuit!! - Naperville,IL

I am wanting to buy a new swimsuit for a trip I have coming up. I usually have bought my suits at Target, but I am wanting to feel and look good in a nice slimming suit. I am tall and a thick girl and I have always had a hard time finding the right suit for me. I am trying to lose weight and get fit, but that is something that has always been hard for me too. I have had two kids, so I need to stick with a tankini or one piece. Please provide me with some places to look, or ideas to help me feel good about myself. Thank you!

I love my Land's End suit. It's a simple tank that I picked up at Sears last year. I am hard to fit so I wouldn't buy a suit online but the Land's End shop at Sears has a good variety. I love that I can actually SWIM in my suit! It doesn't ride up my butt, my chest doesn't hang out the top when I swim or bend over, it doesn't bulge in weird places, I'm not flashing any rolls of fat - and I'm a size 16. One of my sisters is the same size or maybe even a size or two smaller and her suits are always such a train wreck that she ends up wearing a t-shirt or cover up in the water to hide the fact that the neck is hanging low or she's got some skin squeezing out in a really unflattering spot. A good, supportive, well-built suit that covers everything that needs covering is absolutely freeing. I had no qualms about stepping out of my coverup and into the pool at a BBQ on July 4th. I didn't look great in my suit - that would require a 50 lb weight loss LOL - but I did at least look not inappropriate or unsightly.

I love the Lands End Grecian style. I team it with a cute little frilled mini swim mini to cover my wobbly thighs.

Have you ever tried any of the suits they have a Land's End? Best fitting and some of the nicest and most flattering styles you could want. Also...if you can spring for a high-priced suit that will last and you love color....check out Athleta. I have two suits from them and each time I wear them I get stopped about how attractive the colors and patterns are. Check it out!!

I like Lands End. They are really good with their return policies and make it easy. My tankini has a skirt that doesn't remind you of the old-timey skirts - it's very flattering. And you buy the sizes separately for the top and bottom. So, tankini top, skirt bottom. Some skirts are long and some are shorter - you choose.

I love buying my swim suit on Zappos.com! If you create an account shipping & returns are free. For the past few years I have bought 6-7 at a time and I try them on at home and return all but 1. The only way to buy a suit for me from now until forever! Also, they ship the next day for free so it's fast and easy. They offer full refunds as long as you haven't worn it for a year! It's pretty awesome. A lot of my friends do this now too.

If you want to come a little bit north to Arlington Heights, then I highly recommend Betty Schwartz's Intimate Boutique. Name brand suits, wonderful help with fitting your suit and free alterations for most things. I needed cups put in so there was a small charge for that. Venus Swimwear is also a great catalog company to buy from. You can buy separate pieces to fit your body.

I found over the years that the best buys are at Lord & Taylor. The quality and selection is excellent in the one piece and tankini. I usually purchase in August, but I do not have to be selective as I do not have a weight issue. The quality and selection is there for a mature figure with stylish lines. Gortex is pricey but well worth it as it will hold up for a fantastically long time. I swim frequently and I keep going back to that suit because it endures and holds its shape.
Have a wonderful summer and don't forget the sunscreen!

I second (third?) Athleta. They have brick and mortar stores or you can purchase on line. It's been one of my better suits and I've had a lot of them. I think they are worth the extra price.

I've also had good luck with Land's End in the past, but I got a little tired of them, especially when I would see my same suit multiple times during the summer.

If you have a larger bust I recommend suits with underwire in bra sizes. They've worked best for me for both fit and support.

Miracle Suit is another one that I've had pretty good luck with. They can be harder to find in tankinis though, which is my favorite style. I think they are usually one pieces. I might have one Miracle Suit tankini. I find their colors and patterns less youthful looking than Athleta.

Good luck!

Lands End or J.Crew have great 1 piece suits. Don't wear a swim dress unless you are very obese. Skirted bathing suits usually make you look more homely and dowdy. A one piece will hold you in and wear it with pride!

I have bought my last few suits at Marshall's and was able to get great deals on Miraclesuits. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and it was getting picked over, but everything was at clearance prices. I never thought I'd buy a Miraclesuit, but I really like them.

Lands End does have some fantastic swimsuits especially in their Slender Suits. I bought two and love the way they make me look. I order multiple sizes and return the ones that don't fit to the Lands End store at Sears. Super easy. There is a good assortment of sizes and styles at the stores as well. I should add that I usually hate swimsuit shopping, but when I tried on these suits from Lands End I actually felt good about my body.

I, too have weight issues. I have 5 children and my body has yet to bounce back. I love to be in the sun but being uncomfortable with my body, I tend to stay indoors. I found an awesome and flattering suit to wear to the Dells. It's a bit on the pricey side but worth it if I can wear it comfortably. The brand is Athena (Athena swimwear website), and I found it online. It's super cute and trendy. Good luck on your search!
