Need a First Communion Gift, but I'm Really Strapped This Week. Help!

My little sister is having her First Holy Communion this Sunday, she is 8 years old. I have NO idea what to get her. I have to fly home to go to it, so that was pretty expensive to begin with. I can't believe I didn't think about this sooner.

I know this is going to be a very very special day for her. What could I do other than giving her the traditional card with cash. I'm pretty sure our Mom will be getting her a Bible also.

What can I do next?

I got little cross earings as a first communion gift that I still have even though I am no longer Catholic. I also got a rosary with beads that were made out of faux pearls (pearls are my birthstones)

I agree with the idea of a cross necklace or charm. It doesn't have to be expensive--then she can wear it without pressure. :) Family Christian Bookstores has a nice selection.

We give coins to people a lot.

Go to a coin dealer and get a proof set of the year she was born, or year of communion or get Morgan Silver Dollars.

We collect coins so I usually keep a roll of Morgans in special cases just for this reason.

How about a beautiful sterling charm, For now tie it around a ribbon and tie it around a small bouquet of grocery store flowers. Later you can purchase the sterling chain.

James Avery has timeless designs and charms for EVERY occasion. This could be something she could start collecting.

A lot of stores carry inexpensive cross jewelry (necklaces, rings, earrings). A child's book of bible stories would also be great idea. Browse through a Christian store for more inexpensive ideas! Best of luck!

I would find a Catholic Store, they have plenty of little trinkets. How about a nice frame? You can even get it engraved or a little jewelry box engraved and Things Remembered. Good luck...........

I think something that would mean something to her now, but even more so later, would be to take time write out a few scriptures/quotes that have meant something to you in your life. Maybe share a short story about it or include a picture. You could take what you make and laminate it at Kinkos so that it will last a lifetime or put it in a frame. If you had time, Shutterfly, iPhoto, Walgreens etc. are great sites for making a photo book and they're fairly inexpensive (especially if you look for a coupon code to save $$). Something to remember for future gifts. I always think something personal and meaningful is the best gift ever. Good luck : )

Is there a Christian store near you? They will usually have all sort of trinkets for the little ones.
How about silly bands shaped like Christian symbols, my girls love them.

Find a Catholic religious store and buy her a medal of her name saint. There is a store like this in Kansas City called Donnelly's on Troost St. Of course, any type of medal or religious necklace would be nice. Rosaries are also a keepsake gift and budget friendly.

She's little so she won't know how much things cost anyway!

I would suggest going to TJ Maxx or Target and buying a photo album. Take a ton of pictures and then printing them while you are home and give her the album of pictures. You could also offer to do her hair that morning as some special time together.

Time with big sister is the most valuable gift you can give her.

My nine year-old has a 26 year-old sister and I know that's how my younger daughter feels.

I agree with spending time with her. What about doing her nails for her before the ceremony? Or the bible cover.

I think jewelry is always special for First Communion, but if you think she will be getting too much of that...what about taking her out the next day for a girl's lunch? You could hit Panera or whatever is "special" to her and just the two of you hang out for lunch. Or, go the day before to take her to get her nails done - maybe over the top, but fun :) The time together will be remembered more than the gift. I have teens and toddlers, both, and they love the time singled out to be special :) Enjoy!
