Need a Dr, but Don't Know What Kind?

My husband contracted bacterial meningitis in March. He was on a strong dose of antibiotics for 4 weeks because the meng. infected his brain, spine and heart valves. Ever since he started feeling better, he has had severe anxiety, antisocial behavior, and trouble sleeping. He is being seen by a psychiatrist and is on antidepressants, xanax and seroquel for sleeping. I would like a medical doctor to review the cat scan of when his brain was infected and possibly compare it to now to see if there is any permanent damage in his brain. What kind of dr should I have him go see?

What can I do next?

I would think you would want a pathologist. But I wanted to mention that while I was in high school a boy I knew contracted meningitis as well, I believe bacterial, and when he was finally back, his personality had changed drastically. People said he was a different person and we were told it was a result of the meningitis. I know this may not be what you want to hear but I at least wanted you to know that it may not be abnormal for something like that to happen. Good Luck to you both and I hope he makes a full recovery.

He'd be helped by seeing a neurologist who specializes in holistic therapies and orthomolecular medicine to help people recover from neuroligical illnesses and injuries. That type of enlightened doctor is rare but can be located. One of the best in the country is located in Naples, FL, - Dr. Perlmutter.

You could try a neurologist. I'm sure he had one following him when he got diagnosed, so try to stay with the same one if you can. Good luck!

Neurologists deal with such things. Since his 'symptoms' are related to anxiety and such, I would stongly suggest you see a neuro-psychologist. They have medical experience and can easily read CT scans, MRIs, etc. They will be better at noticing subtle differences that might explain the personality changes. If you are in Orlando or Tampa I could recommend people as I used to work in the field of neuro rehab and have worked with many of these types of doctors. Send me a message if you need a suggestion.

B.,

It sounds like you husband really needs to see a neurologist. I recommend Rosanna Garner in South Tampa. ###-###-####.

Depending on the findings you may want to also see an acupuncturist. I recommend Dr. Xiao Zhang on Virginia Ave (Near St. Joes)- ###-###-#### www.tbac.net. She is an acupuncturist trained in China & an MD her in the US (most trained in china are only MDs in China)

Good luck & keep us posted.

You should probably see a neurologist - call and talk to them first and tell them what is happening to see if they feel he needs to be seen.
