Need a Dentist for Terrified Daughter.

When we got our daughter, Olivia from China she would refuse to open her mouth for her Ped. Dr. to even look in her mouth. She has jaws of steel. It took several visits to the dentist, before she would even open up her mouth for him to count her teeth (we were there anyway.) Earlier in the year she got a cavatity. She handled it, o.k., but part of the filling has fallen out and is growing. According to my husband when the Dentist started to work on her she freak about having a needle to num the pain. (I hate those needles, too. They hurt.) He decided it was better for her to see a child dentist. Anyone, have an suggestions in the Carol Stream, IL area? A really good child Dentist? As a child the one I saw was awful and not very patient.

She just turned 7 years old this summer.

Thank you
J.

We go to an awesome kids dentist in Glen Ellyn named Kelly Kirtland. My girls LOVE going! My youngest fell and broke two teeth at 18 months. After having them repaired, we thought she'd be traumatized by the dentist forever (plus she's shy anyway) but she still loves going. The entire staff is super sweet and kind. Google her name and you will find her website. Good luck!

When you find someone, call in advance and let them know of your daughter's fear. Sometimes they will prepare for that -- my step kids have been given laughing gas to calm them. My dentist also prescribes DH a single Valium to take before he goes in because he is still afraid of the dentist! You just need to give them some notice.

Michelle M has the right idea.

I too hate needles and drills and dentists. When I go into the dentist, I ALWAYS preface my visit when I make my appointment or they call me for an appointment that I hate needles and drills and that I firmly believe in pain-free (!!!) dentistry. They always give me nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and my experience is now OK, not pleasant, but OK.

I've told the dentist he should put a landscape on the ceiling, but he hasn't done that. I went to one dentist and he had pictures of bunnies, puppies, kittens and Tinkerbell on the ceiling. He said that was his "kids room".

Good luck to you and yours.

Hi J. -

You can try Dayspring Pediatric Dentistry in St. Charles. Not too far from you - straight down North Avenue. They have nitrous and it worked wonderfully for my anxious daughter, who coincidentally was adopted from China and also turned 7 this summer :) Good luck.

We go to Millinneum Park Dentistry w/Dr Stephen Gordon downtown Chicago across from Millinneum Park. He's not a pediatric dentist, but a holistic dentist and could possibly use ozone therapy instead of filling her tooth. His office is open by appointment only and consists of himself, a nurse, and a receptionist.

He works on my daughters - one of them since she was just a few months old (she had enamel problems.) He's not an advocate of putting kids under anesthesia or holding them down, and will even let you sit in the chair and hold her if necessary/wanted, and is extremely patient and non-threatening. They can show her exactly what they are going to do, etc. and have no problem taking their time.

He uses fillings that don't contain mercury too, so if they DO break, there's no the danger that is posed with other dentists' fillings. They have headphones so she could listen to music if she wants (or you could take your own iPod or whatnot) and sunglasses so the light doesn't glare into your eyes.

I wish you the best!

Looks like I'm the 2nd one to put a vote in for Dayspring Pediatric Dentistry in St. Charles. Dr. Kyle is a wonderful kid's dentist. He & his wife have 4 children - including an adopted child so they may know a little of what you've experienced. Highly recommend him - my 3 yr old has actually enjoyed his trips there every 6 mos. Their # is ###-###-####.

My kids go to an amazing pediatric dentist but she's in Hoffman Estates. She is outstanding!!! She is super patient, kind, etc. Everything you would want in a pediatric dentist. If you are willing to drive a bit, I think that it would be worth your while. The practice is called ABC Dentristry and her name is dr. Broderson. Their number is ###-###-####.
Good luck!!
