Need 50'S Wear, ASAP

Our church youth group is hosting a 50's diner tomorrow night and just last evening found out their 'assignments' for the night and what they need to wear. I need one poodle skirt, approx size 2, and two pair of saddle oxfords, ladies sz 9 and 7.
Does anyone know where I might rent these, or is there some that I may borrow???
We live in North Garland and I don't have the time to go too far to pick anything up.
Can you think of another style of outfit the ladies wore? I used to have a shirtdress but it is long gone! What about an alternative shoe?
Thank you for any help that you can give!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for so many awesome suggestions! I didn't mention in the original post that this is a camp fundraiser so I am really not wanting to spend funds on it - I could put those toward paying for camp!
With all of your ideas, I have been able to come up with a way to make what we have work. Plus after talking with one of the youth workers, they actually want the waitresses to wear the 'rolled up' jeans and white shirt so I have no need for the skirt. As far as shoes, my youngest has a black Champion pair (Payless) that she colored all black so she will be wearing those and I didn't think about it until I was looking at the cheap white ones at WalMart that my oldest has a pair of mock-verse! I know it will not look as hip, the Converse type shoe with a poodle skirt, but that is what we have.
Once again, thank you so much for your responses and for helping me get my brain truly thinking of what we needed.

Annie's is in North Garland. It is on Arapaho, between Shiloh and Jupiter. It used to be in the shopping center by CiCi's, but it moved. I think it is by a carwash. They have tons of cute, inexpensive stuff. Good luck!

Try penny loafers for shoes. The capris, button down shirt and scarf would be perfect. Also, what we used to call bobby socks were definately in.

Hey! I knew I was saving that poodle skirt for some reason. ( : I have one that I wore to a function in college ( : I think it'd be perfect. It's a size 2 or 4. I think I just wore a pink cardigan with it. It's grey, with silver roping for a leash and a white poodle. I live in Murphy so I"m not far from you. Give me a call. ###-###-####.

Try capris, a white shirt (button down or t-shirt), tie a scarf around your neck, wear bobby socks and Ked type tennis shoes or even just flats, sunglasses and a high ponytail.

For a 50's theme you can also do capris- like roll up some jeans so they are ankle length and tie a white button up shirt at the waist. Wear a side pony tail or a pony tail with a colorful scarf in it that hangs down. alternative shoes-white keds with socks with the little ball on the back- cute and easy!

You could go with Robbie F's suggestion of rolling the pants, use a white t-shirt and scarf around the neck. For shoes, plain white Keds would be fine (and reusable!) or...if it's a function inside...just wear socks and call it a 'sock hop'?! Enjoy...sounds like fun!

How about jeans...rolled up to capri length with a white shirt (button down) and a scarf. You could do a pair of keds. Also, check www.dallasvintageshop.com. They have tons of stuff...the store is Plano. You could just get ideas from their website.

Wear jeans rolled at the ankles, white blouse with chiffon scarf at the neck and white boobie socks with black loafer type shoes or white keds...perhaps check good will or a thrift store for these items if you don't have them---

Have fun!

The "new" capris were "peddle pushers" back then -- along with P. loafers -- which are current (not the P. part) -- then a long shirt with the collar up in back.
Have a great time!

The easiest option is to do jeans rolled up to capri length wtih big rolls, a button down white shirt and a scarf/handkerchief tied around the neck with a ponytail. Then you can just put on some white Keds (or similar - Payless usually carries them) with Bobby socks. You can do a search online for Happy Days and get some other style ideas.

Good luck!

Call the big Party Stores, there is one at Mockingbird and Abrams that has costumes year round. I think the jeans idea is terrific. My son did Cotillion this year and it was a world of poodle skirts and the rolled up jeans look for the girls. You could borrow a leather jacket and wear that over your white shirt for the "bad girl" look.

P. M,

Wal-mart has some solid white KED type tennis shoe whch you can buy for about $5.00. They already have the seam stitching simular to the saddle oxford shoes. Then get some black paint (spray paint from hardware or the t-shirt type paint from the craft section) Paint the "saddle" part of the shoe black. Spray paint will dry quicker than the t-shirt type paint. Just be sure to tape the area of the shoe around wat you are painting so the spray does not effect the white part of the shoe.

Hi, P.. It might be a little late now, but penny loafers were all the rage in the 50's as well as blue jeans rolled up to mid-calf with a big white men's shirt with the tail out over the jeans and bobby sox with your loafers. This might be a little easier to come by than the poodle skirt.

Hope that helps.

Call Costume World---it's over by the Galleria---save driving time....they'll tell you over the phone what they've got in stock available. You can rent or buy from them. They have the biggest selection anywhere in the metroplex and fairly reasonable. I've rented costumes around $25-30 before and really nice ones. have fun!

If you still want a skirt instead of capris, you could also use a pencil skirt in a basic black with a satin or leather jacket/cardigan sweater and scarf in your hair or around your neck. I plain oxford shirt underneath, perhaps in a bright color, would finish the look.

My youngest daughter is involved in a pageant system that has a 50's party every summer during State and International competition. I feel like I am an expert on the 50s by now trying to come up with new ideas! She has worn a McDonalds' "waitress" oufit (McDonalds was founded in the 50's) and a MOUSEKETEER (complete with a Mickey Mouse skirt, a shirt with her name across the front, and mickey mouse ears) along with lots of traditional poodle skirt outfits.

Since you are in a pinch here is my suggestions:

Antique Mall on the corner of Main/McDermott & Greenville in Allen (next to Big Lots). One of the booths has several poodle skirts in many sizes and colors. They are not very expensive (around $20.00-30.00) and good quality.
Shoe alternatives could be simple black ballet flats or KEDS (or white canvas tennis shoes-Payless). With the KEDS you can paint the middle section with black craft paint (add fabric medium-comes in a bottle next to the craft paints at Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby-just mix it together with your black and it helps the paint not to dry stiff, also adheres to the fabric to prevent "chipping").

Hope this helps. Have fun at your party!

What about a knee lenght pencil skirt, white blouse and sweater with black ballet slipper type shoes. I know I have seen pictures of my mom in an outfit like that and she is always saying that the ballet slipper shoes are like what she used to wear.

You could wear capri pants with a white button up shirt with some sort of scarf around your neck and you could either wear white tennis shoes (the keds kind) or an idea you might want to try is that you could get some of the white tennis shoes from Walmart (I think they cost around $5.00) and paint them to look like the saddle oxfords with black paint. Hope this helpd!!

I just bought a poodle skirt, saddle oxfords and matching socks at Annie's. Annie's is on Arapaho between Jupiter and Galaxie on the north side of Arapaho. She has a good selection of skirts (or at least she did). She also has hair scarves and neck ties.

We just had a discussion last night about what everyone's wearing to an event this Sat night that is 50's. One gal said to roll up your jeans to just under the knee, put on an oversized men's shirt with tails, put your hair in a ponytail (if long enough) and tie a scarf around your neck.

Have fun!

Hi Pam. I was in Target yesterday and they had several shirt dresses. They were very pretty and reasonably priced. I am sure that you can probably get plenty of use for them now that they are in style again. Hope this helps. E.
