So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who took the time to post your very helpful answers! I really appreciate all of them! My sister is currently trying the combination of zofran with emetrol and sea bands. She is also chewing peppermint gum, which she says helps. She also is drinking ginger tea, which helps with the nausea. Hopefully the zofran will kick in soon, because she says it really hasn't helped as much as she had hoped. Thanks again!

I could only keep down ice cream for a few weeks, and any movement made me puke. I tried the stuff that worked last time promethize and something else but no avail. Then my brother the pharmacist told me to ask my doctor about ZOOFRAN or its genernic ondansetron. Its a anti nausea med and doesn't make you sleepy like the the other meds i mentioned. I couldn't even take care of my 3yr til i started this stuff. After 3 days i was eating normally and was so happy to be able to drive my car.

If its a little nausea the preggie pops or drops work.

I spend 5 month of my pregnancy with nausea and vomiting with two of my pregnancies. I tried everything and no prescribe or over the counter remedies helped. the main thing is to keep hydrated by consuming small amounts of liquids like sucking on ice. the more dehydrated the more one tents to vomit. Eat things that digest fast, like bananas, and rice.

something that help me was the orange soda sunkist. I did not vomit that but I did vomited water and other liquids.

Well, my constant nausea didn't usually lead to vomiting, but it never let up, and what helped me was eating a little bit, but quite often. Trail mix worked really well, especially a little bit before getting out of bed. To be honest, I didn't feel good at all until about 16 weeks. It just sucked.
Depends also how bad she is. If she can't eat anything without throwing up, she should talk to her OB.

My first pregnancy I only had mild nausea and hardly any throwing up. I took ginger tea and actually a co-worker suggested gingersnaps too, which actually tasted much better ;) so I ate those too. Just tried to keep something in my stomach.
The next pregnancy (and the next) were a totally different story. My nausea started out the same and then got worse, and worse and worse until I was on the couch all day and had to miss work, etc. I finally contacted a woman who has extensive experience working with herbs, etc. (She was also my doula with the first birth, coincidentally.) She said that the reason you get sick is because your body is having to get rid of chemicals, hormones, and toxins for 2 (or more) now, and many people's livers (which play a big role in these jobs) can't handle that. If you get your liver functioning in peak condition, the morning sickness tends to fade. She recommended some herbs for the liver, and both times, after 2-3 days of taking them, I improved a lot. It seems like the first time or two I took them, I threw up again and thought, This is not working!, but I kept at it and they did finally work. I would talk to someone at a health food store to make sure about which herbs might be best and which ones are safe to take during pregnancy. The lemon water someone mentioned is a great liver cleanser as well, which is probably why it worked for her.
I think a lot of factors come into play with morning sickness though, so if one thing doesn't work after a while, try something else. My fourth child I again had only mild morning sickness. Some people tend to get very bad morning sickness and some don't. And, it varies from pregnancy to pregnancy too. I would definitely look into the liver herbs though. They were a lifesaver to me. Oh, and someone mentioned peppermint... I used to sit and sniff peppermint oil when I started feeling nauseated. Definitely refreshing and made me feel a bit better! Good luck to her. My sister is currently pregnant with twins (her first pregnancy) and is in the fun stage too! ;)

I am on my 5th months and my first 4 were a nightmare. I could puke the air that I breathed. Chewing mint gum helped me out of it. It also reduced my need of wanting to spit all the time.I hope your sister finds a solution. Tell her that once she is through with the sickness it's going to feel like heaven. She will feel the pregnancy buzz that is so unique words are never enough to express how good it feels. Tell her to hang in there and I wish her all the best.

Have you tried ginger tea, crackers and banana. The B6 in banana helps. To make ginger tea, peel or grate ginger in a cup, pour boiling water over it, let it steep for 2-5 mins, then sweeten with sugar/maple syrup and drink. This helped me alot during my pregnancy.

Candied ginger, ginger tea, ginger ale, Saltine crackers, and limes helped. But what I really found is that if I ate more frequently but smaller portions, I felt better. I needed to eat when I wasn't feeling great. And dairy was helpful. I also took prenatal vitamins at night after eating.

Hi R.,
I was sick with both pregnancies, but my second was the worst. If your sister hasn't already tried this, she can try to change her prenatal vitamin to quick dissolving capsule, if not already, and take it at night instead of the morning. Tandem DHA was a good choice for me. Taking Unisom Nighttime Sleep-Aid with a vitamin B6 (makes you sleepy, not good if you have to work), try taking ginger pills; Ginger lollipops, mints helped too in the morning. I could not keep anything down, including water or crackers. Nothing was appealing. After trying all the above, which I know has worked for some, I finally had to give in and ask the doctor to prescribe something. As much as I hated to take medications while pregnant, I felt 99% better and was able to finally function. Zofran did the trick, although it can be expensive.

Kudos to Donna-
I too had horrendous nausea (throughout both my pregnancies, right up until I began labor). Didn't do much vomiting, but the nausea was debilitating. If the other suggestions (lemon in her water, ginger, gingerale, avoiding caffeinated foods/beverages, small snacks throughout the day, sea-bands, etc etc etc) don't give her sufficient relief to function, tell her to ask her doctor about Zofran (the chemo anti-emitic). It is pricey, even with insurance, but mail order plans can be a God-send... My doc prescribed it for me when my 2nd pregnancy was worse than my first (couldn't function enough to take care of my 2 yr old)... it made life livable... no ill effects. Baby was fine (in fact, she's gifted!)...
Please have her talk to her OB and not suffer more than necessary needlessly..

I tried all the options, ginger, motion sick bracelets, anything and everything people told me. None of it worked for me and I had to get some Zofran from the doctor. It was the only thing that worked for me. Insurance didn't cover much, ony 5 pills every 15 days. So, I called every pharmacy in town because the pills are like $25-30 each. Costco is the best place. They are MUCH cheaper there. Good luck to her. Ugh, I totally understand how she feels.

cold compress on the neck (go to the health food store for any herbal remedy, and do not take prescription drugs...very toxic) Crackers are the standard, a little gingerale...and lay down. Hope she doesn't have to go to a job. It's the hormonal change that takes its' toll on our bodies. Best wishes

Crackers, mints, ginger pops, herbal tea? ALL did NOTHING for me. My relief came from SEA BANDS (motion sickness wrist bands). You can get them at Walgreen's or Publix. I would try those first, if that doesn't work, Zofran my be necessary. But, the Sea Bands worked wonders for me. They are uncomfortable to wear long term, but for me, it was far better than the nausea. Sure, a couple people at work made fun of me (I looked like I was ready for tennis,I guess) but it was better than me barfing on their shoes.

I wish that I could help but I will try. I am in my fourth month and I'm still throwing up.

I couldn't get out of bed and nothing seemed to work. These are the things that I managed to keep in my tummy.

Coke slurpees helped sometimes.
I lived off of Jello, Edys popsicles; try the lemon and the lime. Also, a bite of a brownie.

I couldn't eat too much at all. I could not drink water as that would trigger a vomiting attack.

I would fight to keep my prenatals in my stomach but up they would come.

Right now, I'm taking kids vegi vitamins and I can keep them in my stomach. My perinatologist told me to put my prenatals on the shelf as it is important to put on weight. I have lost over ten pounds.

Not sure if she has a little one to take care of but that tends to add to the stress. My son is very active and he has been by my side through it all but he has taken advantage of me knowing that I can't discipline him or take him to his classes like we were doing.

It's important that she get lots of rest. There really isn't much that she can do. Crackers only made it worse for me. Light foods. I literally lived off of Jello and popsicles for two months but at least it was something. Also, I tried the vinegar and salt potatoe chips.

I called a friend of mine who was hospitalized during her pregnancy. She had to be put on an IV; I thought that I was heading in this direction but the jello and pops saved me.

Soda can aggravate the stomach; that's why the coke slurpee helped as it wasn't as harsh. I normally don't drink soda but I had to calm my stomach as I would dry heave with nothing in my stomach and bile would come up.

It was awful. I got sick over this past weekend and I was in tears as I was hoping to feel better; actually it is as it's not every day and not all day.

I do hope that she feels better; every one is different and every pregnancy is different.

I got very sick with my son but I could function; this is 100 times more intense.

G-D Bless

It looks like you got tons of advice and already but I'm pregnant with my 2nd child and this experience has definitely been different than my first which I had no sickness at all. I'll be 20 weeks on Friday and had about 1 months of feeling quesy without vomiting and then the next month was just the vomiting... Ginger really worked for me; I drank and still drink a cup of ginger tea every morning, drink ginger ale during the day and at ginger snaps as snacks. Keeping your belly full will help also if you can even tolerate eating. If you want to take an over the counter pill you can get Emetrol which will also help; I've never taken it but I have friends that say it works. Good luck to you in your pregnancy and hope that this stage ends for you soon!

Have her talk to her OB they can prescribe something, it may not work 100% but it will help her. I took meds for it threw my whole pregnancy, my “night sickness” never stopped, but thankful the nauseas-ness went away around my 4th month, but like clock work every night at 3am I would hug the porcelain bowl. But in the mean time she can also try the motion sickness wrist bands she can get them at Walgreen’s by the Dramamine, They are tight but it really helped me especially getting in and out of the car and going up steps (I could not take an elevator during my whole pregnancy). Hope this helps!!

I never had that problem but a friend of mine swore by peppermint. Only Brach's would work, or the kind you get from the heath food store (pure peppermint). Another friend told me ginger root worked for her, which can also be purchased at the health food store.

Good luck!

For some reason lemon water worked for me with my first pregnancy. It didn't do squat for the nausea the second time around, however. The lemon water seemed to get rid of the yucky taste I always had in my mouth that contributed to the nausea.

She can take dramamine but I would clear it with the doctor first. If it gets REALLY bad (like constant vomiting) they will prescribe her a pill that they use with chemo patients.

Hi
Don't know if this will work for pregnancy nausea, but whenever I have an upset stomach with nausea, I use a piece of ginger root and make tea with it - very hot water on a little piece of ginger and sweeten minimally. If possible, don't sweeten, and not too strong as it will burn your throat.
It make not solve it totally but may help her stomach to settle it enough so she can eat.
