Natural Way to Remove Pet Odors

Does anybody know of a natural way to remove dog urine odor from the carpet? I tried baking soda and borax and also tried an enzyme based thing that I got from Central Market. The carpet still smells. I don't know if I just need to try a different brand of enzyme stuff or if anybody knows of something else to try. I do not use chemicals in my home so am looking for something natural.

What can I do next?

We've tried all kinds of pet stain and odor removers, and now only use a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar. It works every time!! And it's inexpensive! We put the solution in a spray bottle, just like another mom suggested.

Have you tried white vinegar? I know that is a strong odor, but I know it also helps prevent dogs from returning to that spot. I want to say it is a 1 to 1 ratio, you can either spray it on or pour a little on and circle inward to prevent the spot from spreading.

Make a mixture of half water and half white vinegar, pour or spray on area, let sit a minute, scrup it in carpet with rag or brucs sponge of some sort, then soak up with a towel. The room will smell like veingar for a couple of hours, but it will go away. It is better then smelling urine.

Hi K., I have had dogs all my life. The best product by far, & I tried alot of them, is called Zero Pet Odor (www.zeropetodor.com). It really works. However, once that urine is in the carpet it worked its way down to the pad. You must have the carpet cleaned professionally (machines have a stronger extraction). This product has no harmful chemicals and no fragrance of its own. It is an amazing product and reasonably priced too.

You can mask the odor all with want... odor removers, sanitizers & carpet cleaners....it doesn't matter... I would recommended cleaning your carpets with a steam cleaner using vinegar. Once a cat or dog urinates on the carpet and if it has not been absorbed within a timely matter your carpet pad absorbs the urine, therefore holding that stinch until replaced! Good Luck

The other solutions sound good, but I would try plain white vinegar first. I would saturate the carpet and then step on a papertowel to soak it up. Once it is dry the vinegar smell will go away hopefully neutralizing your pet smells. My grandmother had dogs all her life, and raised three boys in the 50's. She swore by this until the day she died, and for the record had no pet stains on her carpet.

I got a free bottle of "No Return Odor & Pet Stain Remover" when I purchased 2 Oreck air purifiers...about that time my elderly schnauzer was beginning to have more accidents in the house as he aged. That stuff was awesome. It's expensive, but it really works. You can order it off the Oreck website, or purchase it in an Oreck store.
Oxy 2 works well, too, but if you have serious issues, get the Oreck.
Whatever you do, do NOT get that Urine Gone stuff they sell on TV. It's worthless, but you do get the cool blacklight.

Hi K.-

I'm a pet-sitter so I deal with this ALL the time! Natures Miracle works well but Oxy Pet Stain remover cleans the stain better and seems to remove the smell really well. Good luck!

No, but from experience the smell is in the pad as well and the treatments aren't making it through to the back side of the pad. Febreez helps a lot but if the room gets hot or it's a humid or rainy day the smell will return until you remove the pad or spray on more Febreez. At least that's what happened to us. (We finally had to remove to remove the pad.) I know Febreez isn't natural but just letting you know what we did.
