Hello,

I am searching for some natural ways to treat ADHD and avoid medicating right away.
We would like to try the natural approach first.

Please share any resources and experiences that you have.

Thanks

Yes, search the site because it's been discussed a lot over the past week.

Be very leery of any diet/detox/vitamin comments because the scientific research doesn't back it up. Join CHADD and read ADDitude magazine to stay on top of the latest valid treatment options.

We ended up medicating my stepson. Now that his parents chose that route and I see the effects of the medicine on him I have major mixed feelings on it. He lost a ton of weight bc he doesn't eat during the day and he acts depressed. On the other hand he is doing really well in school. He went from having a behavioral plan with principal to getting greens everyday. His confidence has sky rocketed and he actually likes school now. But the negative effects are great and I just wish his mom would explore other options like therapy and diet. She says she did but I find it hard to believe bc he won't eat anything I make unless it was frozen or from a can. I tried talking to her about an all natural organic diet and she said she did and in same sentence told me she feeds him the frozen jimmy dean breakfast sandwiches for breakfast.

My advice, hire a nutritionalist to help you adjust diet. It will help everyone not just the child.

The best book I read (found at library) is The Myth of the ADHD Child by Thomas Armstrong. It does not deny ADHD. Rather, it goes through the myriad of things that can cause ADHD symptoms and tells you how to check to see which causes your child's issues. Our child responded well to behavioral helps, reduction of distractions, and occasionally coffee on really tough days. I highly recommend it.

This question has been discussed quite a few times here: Search "natural treatments for adhd" in the search bar on the top right and you'll find a lot of good information from past questions.
Good luck!

My son is ADHD. Things that help. (He is 4.5 and I will not do meds at this time)

#1. We took the Dyes out of his diet, we saw an improvement.
#2. We went gluten free, and reduced dairy greatly. Big improvement. He was more comfy in his own skin.
#3. We added Fish Oil to his diet.

Other things that people reduce /remove
High Frutose corn Suyrup.
Chocolate
MSG
and other chemicals.

I sweeten things with Honey (get the honey from your local area and it helps with seasonal allergys 1 tsp a day)

Not sure how old you child is, but we also have my son in school that helps to address the impulsiveness. It is preschool and he has been ther 1 year and I have seen a huge difference. He also get OT there. We have started him young.

You may even want to try the Paleo *sp* diet. it is all natural. The more chemicals you take out of their system the better you are and healither. Since we went gluten free, I have lost weight (positive side effect for me). I try to make most things from scatch.. not easy working full time, but worth it. My kids are healither at least it seems that way.

Good Luck!

Hey SoonerMom!

Check out the book "Gut and Psychology Syndrome" by Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. It's a natural approach like you want, but it is also a lifestyle change. It's one definitely worth reading for the "why" behind changing things in the diet/lifestyle. The many testimonies of moms whose children have been transformed (as well as adults) is amazing! Many, many autism cures from it. You've gotten several good pieces of advice below as well!

God's Grace to you,

Lisa :)

Watch his diet carefully. Start by taking out all dairy and MSG. You should see an improvement soon.

I have also heard of Mom's who give their ADD-ADHD kids a cup of coffee to calm them down. I have never tried it.

You can contact the Easter Seals Society and might want to look at the Autisim diet and check out www.autisimspeaks.com for more ideas, answers and loinks to other sites.

Veronica is correct. There are several posts that you can check.

I just wrote one the other day.

You can try Occupational theraphy for ADHD. Do a google search...

Go to a really reputable health food store and see what they rec.

Stay clear of processed foods, dyes, MSG, dairy, chemicals, aspartame, etc...

Getting tested for food allergies is always a good thing to rule out !

ADHD and allergies can overlap. If your child has an allergy to a certain food(s), then, that can make a child irritable.

Feingold.com is a good resource !

Does your child have an sensory processing?

Cellular nutrition with brain support. There are 2 options, depending on the age of the person but there's some overlap. It is much much easier than doing huge elimination diets and it allows kids/adults to eat a little more "normally" without feeling deprived. Of course it's wise to avoid dyes and artificial ingredients, but that applies to all of us. One of the reasons there is SO much of an issue with add/adhd, allergies, behavior, digestive issues, asthma and many other problems is from the long term effects of processed foods and insufficient nutrients even in our fresh foods due to pollution, growing techniques, soil depletion, and so on. Friends of mine never medicated their child - and he's now in his late 20s and still using cellular nutrition effectively and very simply. I can give you some info to check out on line but message me first. Too much to write here.
