Natural Birth for Twins?

Has anyone out there done a natural birth for twins? I had an intervention/drug-free birth with my 2 and a half year old daughter and I'd like to do the same this time around. I just found out that I am carrying twins (I'm due in 3 months) and would love to hear others' POSITIVE twin birth stories.
Thanks!

Congrats Congrats!!!!!

I am also a mother of twins....boy/girl. Almost a year old and bringing out the grey's in me :) Good Luck in the last trimester (I found it the most uncomfortable) and the most exciting!! I myself had a scheduled c-section at 38 1/2 weeks so I can't advice on the natural birth but I will agree with another responder about the multiples group. I am a member of Southcoast Mothers of Multiples which is the New Bedford, Dartmouth, Freetown, Acushnet, Fairhaven and surrounding cities group. We have a few that are also expecting, some veterans (college age twins) and everything in between. Everyone is very friendly and has alot of advice for questions you may have.

If you are from this area look us up online or look up your local mothers group, they have them throughout MA, they can be very helpful!!

Goodluck with everything and enjoy your miracles!!!!!

I did not have twins myself but I work on a Maternity Ward and we have had quite a few twin births who have had them naturally. As long as you and your OB know the plan and there are no complicatons you can have your twin babies the same way you had your first one. Congratulations and hope you have a wonderful experience bringing your new children into the world!!

Congrats on the twins! That's exciting news!

I haven't had twins myself, but my best friend had a natural delivery for her twin boys years ago - even though they were both breech, so it CAN happen! - and I'm a doula and student midwife so I've seen a number of twin births that were fabulous!

Feel free to PM me if you would like. A lot of this depends on what YOU want for these impending births and where you plan to deliver - some places are more natural birth-friendly than other, especially for twins.

Best wishes to you and your family!

Hi S.! Congratulations to you in having twins and deciding to have them naturally. I have a friend (who is studying to be a midwife) and her sister just had twins last spring??? Anyways, she had both of them naturally with help of her midwife, one was born at home and the other one at the hospital because the 2nd baby was taking too long to come out and the midwife just wanted to make sure everything was okay. Well everything was OKAY all right, she had healthy twins pretty much at the comfort of her house, it was amazing! (That's what my friend told me, but I did see pictures and they look like it is an AWESOME experience). I would recommend you to look for a midwife, doula, or just talk to your OB/GYN and MAKE A BIRTH PLAN!!!! Here is the website for the Midwives of Maine http://midwivesofmaine.org/ I think they would be the BEST people to talk to, since they know pretty much all about the subject.
Good luck to you and your family!
God Bless You!

PS: I also read your post about the family car being a Prius, I love that car but is going to be hard fitting 3 carseats in it, so I would recommend you a slightly bigger car, and bring all the carseats with you if you go buy one. I had to upgrade from a Nissan Altima to a SUV because of that same reason, well, I just had 2 carseats and a 8 year-old. Please keep us updated about the twins!!!

Hi S.,
I have a 4 year old and 2 year old twins. All natural births, no drugs, all healthy children, and all girls! I went to 38 1/2 weeks with the twins and had a healthy birth. Both girls were out in under two hours and five pushes, total between the two of them. Two days later, we all went home. I would love to talk with you if you wish. You can e-mail me if you'd like to talk on the phone. I'd rather answer your questions than just write a long answer here. I found out I was having twins at 19 weeks. It's a true blessing, lots of work, but lots of reward. All the best.
C.
p.s. Have you joined your local Mothers of Multiples group? It's worth it. I don't go to the local meetings much, but I like the playgroups for multi-ages and the e-mail contact with other parents of multiples. (They also have great second hand sales that moms of twins and expectant moms of twins get to go into first.) It could be worth it to attend a meeting before the twins are born to make some contacts. Also, some hospitals have groups for twins. Some of the issues that come up with twins are different, mostly you end up not sweating the small stuff which often comes up at first-time parent mothers groups.

Wow! Congratulations!
My SIL had a natural twin birth. It was her goal, 2nd pregnancy, and #2 was breech, so she had quite a team that was to be present for their arrival and the dr's were going to try to manually turn baby #2 after the birth of #1.
She ended up delivering them at home - very quickly. The first was unassisted and she caught the baby herself while sitting on the toilet and #2 was born breech 11 minutes later. The girls were fine and healthy and we all feel like it happened this way, b/c hospitals have so many protocols for their own sake of liability that this might not have been allowed if she hadn't been at home.
It is a wonderful positive example of our bodies doing what they are intended to do.
Please have great confidence in where you choose to birth - and you will have your desires!

Best of everything to you!

Hi S., I have boy/girl twins who are now almost 15 months old. I had them in the OR, in case of risk, but naturally, without medication of any kind. I had used hypnobirthing for my son who's now 3.5 and I used the same visualization techniques for the twins. You can do it! If you have any more specific questions please feel free to write to me personally. What a blessing! M.

Hi S.,
I just responded about your 3 car seat dilemma.

I had my twins in the hospital (OR room) vaginally with an epidural. I knew I wanted the drugs for pain but I know of other twin moms who have done no drugs (I'm assuming that's what you mean about naturally). As for just finding out you are expecting twins so late in the game. Take the news seriously. I found out with my first set of twins late in the game and I went into preterm labor. Preterm labor is super serious. Keep yourself extra hydrated and take it slow (even with a toddler you need to).

Best of luck.

Hi S.,

I have twin baby girls, and they are 13 months old. My 14 week untrasound discovered 2 babies. I couldn't imagine being 6 months along and then finding out there were 2 babies. The 3rd trimester is your toughest, the birth will be your easiest. My positive twin birth story for you ... I labored 2 days (water broke Saturday, the girls arrived Sunday) The excitment of meeting your babies is the best drug out there! This was my first prenancy so I personally didn't know what giving birth was like but I knew a womans body was made for it and I wanted the real deal. My husband and I did not want to know gender before the babies arrived so I just can't say enough how the excitment overrides the pain. Baby A presented first, she was on the right side and in perfect position and weighed 6 pounds 5 ounces. Baby B arrived 2 hours later, uncomplicated and smiling also weighing exactly 6 pounds 5 ounces. We all spent 2 days in the hospital, they nursed from the very begining with big appetites and we all left the hopsital together. Not a single drug on board for any of us. During the delivery I stayed right in my hospital room the whole time with one midwife to catch each baby and family at my side during the pushing.
You are going to do just fine, your delivery will be joyous, and your babies will be healthy!!!!!!
Bless you,
L.

Congrats! I have 11 month old twins and an almost 4 year old. You will have a blast!! I delivered naturally with my oldest and wanted the same with twins. My doc said with twins most OBs deliver you in the OR with an epidural because emergency c sections happen a lot. This was the same with a few friends and different docs. I ended up with a planned C due to breech but a few friends had vaginal deliveries with the epidural in the OR. Though I was anti c-section- I delivered 2 big healthy 37 week twins without complication and we all went home together.

It is absolutely possible. My sister in law had a vaginal birth with her twin boys. I believe she was induced and had an epidural...but no c-section!

I had twin girls a year ago. I had to have a C-Section because baby A (Lily) was a frank breech and baby B (Ella) was transverse. So, I can't speak to the vaginal birth (I did have a vaginal birth with my son 3 years ago). But I can speak to a healthy twin pregnancy. I found out I was having twins (BIG surprise!) at 14.5 weeks and my sister who is a midwife said the most important thing to a healthy twin pregnancy is consuming protein, protein, protein! I ate about 120 grams a day and my girls thrived. They were 39 weeks - 6lbs and 6lbs 1oz. Perfect and nursing within 30 minutes of their birth (don't let anyone tell you can't nurse twins OR singletons soon after a C-Section!).

Good luck - and rest when you need to. Drink lots of water. And eat your protein!

I wish my friend TC was on Mamasource... I'll share her story for her since she is not. She delivered twin boys vaginally/naturally and had a wonderful experience. One of them was transverse when labor began but turned after his brother was born. She had to deliver in the operating room (or at least in the surgical area of the hospital) because her doc was convinced they would need to do a C, but everything went well. She wishes she had been more adament about breastfeeding them in the first few days at the hospital (staff kept giving them bottles of formula without asking) but other than that had a good experience. Best of luck to you!!! How exciting!!!
