My husband and I have been married for about 4 years. We were moving abroad soon after the wedding, so I never had a chance to change my name. I'd like to do it now, but the process is more difficult at this point. Sounds like I have to publish it for a few weeks in a paper and jump through several hoops. Does anyone have advice on the procedure in IL (Cook Co specifically)?
why would you have to publish it in the paper.......you have to change your social security card - which you can do on-line, i went in to do it and it was a waste of time. Also you need to go to the DMV to change your license. As far as credit cards go and stuff like that just fill out the back of your slips and eventually everything will get changed. Good Luck!
I recently changed my name as well as my husbands name in cook county. I put it off because all in all it seemed to daunting but I found this website and it helped me alot.

I changed my name right after I got married, and you basically have to do your social security card first and then everything else whenever afterwards. You have to send a copy of your marriage certificate in with the application for most everything, including the social security card. It took 8 weeks for me to get my new social security card and my marriage certificate back. I got 2 copies when I applied for my marriage certificate, I think you can get another copy now if you don't want to send your only copy into social security. I didn't think that there was a time limit to get things changed. In fact, I just finished paying off my car and have to go through the process for my title, license plates, registration and city sticker as soon as I get my title back. I would contact social security if I were you and double check about the paper thing, that seems crazy. Maybe that is the case if you just want to change your name and don't have a marriage certificate.
Never heard of publishing your name. All I did was to change my name on social security card and bank accounts. I used both my maiden name as a middle name and then my married name. I didn't start using the married name until years later. In any case, I never heard of publishing your name- sounds crazy.

I'm a newly wed and changing my name wasn't that difficult. I live in Chicago, IL; when I changed my name I got a copy of the marriage certificate, and changed my last name on my ID first. Then I took my new ID and certificate to the social security office and applied for a new card. It was that simple. Most importantly change your name on your ID before you leave.
