I have the non toxic polish for my daughter (2). It never stays on for long. How unsafe is it to use adult nailpolish on kids??

So What Happened?

Wow, you would think I ask a question about politics or religion!! My daughter is two and likes to play dress up which includes painting her nails and btw, it is much easier to cut fingers/toe nails when you get to paint them at the end!! I am not super worried about the dangers of nail polish was just curious if anyone had an ill effects of using it. She is a thumb sucker but I do not paint that finger. Thanks for all the feedback and insight.. and for those who were just judgemental....I am sorry you are so negative!

When I was a kid my mom used her polish on me, I've never heard of anyone dying from toxic nail polish. If you are scared that it might make her sick, she's two and can probably go with out nail polish

I use washable markers on my 4 year old son. He likes to match his cars. One hand is "Lighting McQueen" red and the other one is "Chick Hicks" green most of the time.

I did not even realize there was non toxic nail polish. I use regular nail polish on my girls (3 & 4) with no problems. It does not stay well on their nails (or mine) as they are busy little girls. Don't know if it would stay better or not 8-)

Its not unsafe. I was a nail tech for 6 years. Loved giving manicures and pedicures to little ones. They were so proud when I was done. It's harmless.

Oh, toxic, blah. If it were really so toxic, mother's wouldn't have been putting in on their children for...how long?!?...and still be continuing to do it. I really, REALLY don't think you're harming your children by using nail polish...it's not like you are feeding it to them. I would think if your child sucks their thumb, that THAT might be cause for slight concern...but overall, no. You know, toothpaste is toxic, too. :)

I asked my pediatrician about this forever ago. She said that as long as the child isn't scrapping the polish off and eating it, they're fine. My 5 year old was (well, is) a thumb sucker, and that's okay too. Regular nailpolish is totally fine. I'm curious as to what makes Karin H an expert on the subject, is she a pediatrician?

I have only used regular nail polish on my girls...they are 3 & 6. Never had an issue. And polish never stays on long as they are busy, busy, busy.

When my girls were little, I would put adult polish on their toes, none on their hands. As toddlers, it was a fun, novelty thing, not a fashion statement! Who cares if a 2yo doesn't have a perfect manicure?!

Now that they're 8 and 9, they're allowed to wear adult polish every once in a while, but I don't allow them to use nail polish remover.

I don't understand why some people are so rude in their responses. If you want to polish your kid's nails, go for it. I guess their parents didn't teach them if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Also, if you have to put "No offense" at the beginning- you know you are saying something offensive!
Thanks for asking the question, I was wondering the same thing too! Best wishes :)

I've never been able to keep nail polish on my nails for long.
My hands are just too busy.
Kids hands are busy too and way more likely to end up in their mouths.
Nail polish is basically paint, and although I'm guessing there's no lead in it, it's not something I'd like a child of mine to eat on a regular basis.
Additional:
Mostly Poison Control centers deal with ingestion of liquid nail polish (like drinking it right out of the bottle), and there's no question THAT can be deadly.
Liquid nail polish can contain:
(Poisonous Ingredient(s))
* Toluene
* Butyl acetate
* Ethyl acetate
* Dibutyl phthalate

Breathing in the fumes as is dries is not great either.

Now, after it's dried, most of the solvents have evaporated, so all that's left is the pigment which will never be listed as parts of a healthy meal, but eating a little of it once in awhile will probably not cause much harm.

You don't have to be a doctor to look this stuff up.

"Painted nails may look glamorous, but ingredients in nail polish could have negative health effects. Some ingredients used in nail polish have been linked to cancer, heart problems, reproductive abnormalities, thyroid disorders and allergies, according to Sonya Lunder, M.P.H., a toxins researcher and senior analyst at the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research and watchdog organization in Washington, D.C.".

I have a boy, and he's not interested in having his nails painted, but even if I had a girl, I would not be putting polish on her nails.

I didn't know there WAS kids' polish (I have boys), but my boys have had toenails painted (by me when they begged and by themselves when they found it and were "too quiet" in the other room). My oldest also painted his mouth (lips, teeth, probably his tongue, too) with red polish when he was a year old and did not have any ill effects. I do NOT recommend that as an activity, of course. It was rather frightening to see your child toddler out with red wet stuff all over his mouth and teeth.

I would use the real stuff on my kids and just watch until it dries--during a movie would be good.

My mom takes my daughter for a mani and pedi every 3 weeks or so. She is 3 and loves to get her nails done. I don't see any problems with the regular nail polish.

I guess I have always used adult nail polish on my daughter (also 2). However, I only do her toes as her fingers find their way into her mouth :)

No offense, by why are you polishing your toddler's nails? at 2, 3, 4, or any age before say, 8? There is sooooo much time for that stuff, really.

As long as you are not feeding it to her and she does not suck on her fingers and toes.. she should be fine.

If she is still sucking on her fingers I still would not even put "nontoxic" polish or markers or paints on her nails..

Sally Hanson has this new "press" on nail polish.
With children's small nail beds, I am guessing you could use one piece for 2 or three nails and make it stretch. It lasts about a week. They are cute, different patterns and colors. The downside is that it takes a bit more time to apply , but the results are adorable. The patience will be on both your parts, however, little girls usually will do what it takes to look pretty.
I think any place that carries Sally Hanson products.. press on nails and polishes will carry press on polish ( Ulta I know for sure cares them , Walgreens and CVS perhaps?

There is a nail polish for kids, Piggy Paint, it's a little on the expensive side(24.99 for three bottles), but when I start painting my two year olds finger nails I'll probably invest in some. I paint her toe nails most of the summer (which we live in FL so summer lasts most of the year) with regular adult polish. My mom always did mine and my sisters and we were fine. I don't paint her fingers now, becuse we are trying to get her to stop sucking her fingers, and that is her reward for stopping, no luck yet.
I would call her dr. and see what the office says, just to make sure if you are concerned about her putting it in her mouth. I think it would be fine though.

Where did you find non-toxic polish? 2s still put fingers in their mouths and will still ingest the product. I do not yet allow my 2 yr old to wear polish because I don't think she will keep her hands out of her mouth and while Zoya has less in it, it's still not chemical-free.
