Hello everyone,

I haven't gone to get my nails professionally done for 2+ years and am noticing that the new style (that I'm seeing everywhere!!) appears to be much shorter and darker than before. I use to get the nail tips with the French Manicure style. I'm planning to get my nails done soon and am wondering is the new trend to still use fake nails? Or are people just using their natural nails now? Can anyone help me?!

Thanks so much!!!

natural shorter nails seem to be better. to much gunk can get stuck under long ones and fake ones can cause gross moldy growth!! yuck!

I enjoyed reading Holly's answer.
However, I'm guessing that what's hot in Sacramento
may be very different from what's hot in Cincinatti.
When you go to your local nail salon,
the women there will probably be up-to-date
on what's popular in your location.
As for "using natural nails" . . . .
I will assume that probably 90% of moms with young children
are "using natural nails" nowadays.
My 3-year-old grandson, when he doesn't have sox or shoes on,
says "I am wearing my feet."

I did nails in a salon atmosphere for 6 years and currently have my own home business doing nails. I can tell you that french style is indeed a thing of the past. More than that, acrylic nails are OUT! They are so bad for you, not to mention disgusting. Imagine what is underneath them, and what grows between the natural nail and that acrylic...eww.

Natural, shorter, dark colored, squared nails are very healthy and much more attractive. Use a great top coat (quick n slick, or seche vite) and your polish will last a week!

Hot colors right now- from OPI....
Mrs Olearys BBQ
Bogota Blackberry
Royal Raja Ruby
Black cherry Chutney

I'm 30 and I get gel nails with the white tips. Sometimes I go w/ color if I don't feel like spending the time getting the backfill on the whites, but usually it's just "natural." I usually start out short and once they get too long I start all over again.

I have always had nails. I first started with tips then someone suggested going with fiberglass as they were easier on my real nails. Then I found out how strong my natural nails really were. I now only have them manicured 2x maybe 3x a month. It makes them stronger and healthier. I have had many places think my nails are fake. I even had an instructor ask for another instructor to inspect them thinking they were fake ( my friend was using my nails for her test). Its a great compliment to have other professional nail people think your natural nails are fake.. cause that means they look really good.
Just get them manicured 3 times a month and it will build strength plus you can play with colors..

Short and dark is very chic, though I prefer color on my toes and au natural on my fingertips. I also like to choose colors that are seasonal.

I'd say french tips are out. There is a new type of nail treatment out - I think it's gel-based, and an alternative to acrylic. http://cnd.com/Consumer.aspx

If you don't like the trendy nail colors, no reason to go with them. Choose colors you love! If you're feeling experimental, go for it! For dark shades, deep burgundies, purples, and blacks are good year-round. Dark browns and lavendar greys are very "in" right now, but they are not for everyone. :) As we move towards the holidays, expect to see more sparkling shades. Also, you can check out what OPI's latest color line is and that is a good litmus for what's new.

I've always just used my natural nails...I prefer it.

I would ask the nice person who does your nails what the trend is if you want to stay up to date...but there is nothing wrong with going against the flow and doing what ever it is you prefer!
