Hi Mamas,

Just wondering at what age did you paint you daughter's nails or toenails? I am considering painting my three year old's toes, not really fingers. I have looked up some toxic free nailpolish but not sure if I am making it more of an issue than it really is. It's not a habit I want to start, just something to do for a little fun or reward kind of thing. Just want to know your opinions...please no judgements or mean comments.

Thanks!

I bought Piggy Paint the non toxic nail polish and started around 11 months. But I would have done it earlier if I could have found it sooner.

My sister started painting my daughters toes as soon as she could walk, at 8 mos. and then fingernails at around 2...she is 3 now and loves to get them done by Auntie!

~We just use regular old nail polish.

I started painting my daughters a few months ago. She is almost 2. We use Piggy Paint. They even sell a eco-friendly nail polish remover- I haven't tried that though.

I've always used regular old whatever kind of nailpolish on myself and my daughters... they don't glow in the dark or have extra limbs growing, their hair isn't falling out, they're not losing teeth... Your daughter won't be chewing the polish off her toes; I wouldn't worry about it too much ;) It's great mommy-daughter time!! Have fun :)

I think my daughter was younger than 3. I second the suggestions to buy Piggy Paint! Toxicity in nail polish is a big deal to me.

Have fun! Your daughter will love her pretty toes! :)

My younger sister painted my daughter's toe nails at 2 months old. How she got her to sit still is anyone's guess. She is also the only person I know that can cut an infants nails in less than 2 minutes...

I've been using this as a reward for napping for my 3-year-old daughter. She never puts her fingers in her mouth so I haven't stressed over the brand--actually, I prefer the instant dry/speed dry.

Have fun!

We painted toenails around 3, finger nails we saved as a reward when they stopped sucking their thumbs.

Honestly, I don't remember...but I imagine she might of been almost 4 or 4.

I just want to mention that if your DD already has a bit of a oral fixation (mine sucked a paci till 3.5) don't put it on her fingernails!
My mom put it on my DD's nails a few times and before I knew what was happening DD developed a horrible habit of chewing on her fingers that started by chewing off the polish. :(

And I also recommend Piggy Paint. :)

Have fun!

I did nails for 6 years and have been polishing my daughters toes since she was 1. It's harmless. Hands- I think about 3 is a good age. There's less of the hands going into the mouth at 3.

I finally did my 2.5 year old's nails, but I used Piggy Paint. it's a little pricey, but it's all natural and water based. It comes off after a week, but I'd rather re-do it a few times than worry about the chemicals in regular polish. When she gets older, then I will take her for a real manicure, but for now, piggy paint works just fine for us :) (if you like them on fb, you get special deals and sales )

I have 7 neices all of whom at one point or another lived with me for extended periods of time. I am of the mind that exciting benchmarks must be set in life. Gives children something to look forward to as well as strive toward. When they were 3 but not younger and only in the summer I would paint their toe nails only. We would put on our cute sandles and summer dresses with freshly done hair and strut the town. I told them that when they turned 13 we would go for fingers and toes but only for special occassions but when they turn 16 they can have them done regularly with any money they earn.

At 3 they only got their nails done maybe once a month for July and August and once the nail polish started to look worn it would be removed. No raggedy nails allowed.

The oldest is now 22 and she gets her nails done on a regular basis with her own money and has been doing such since she first started working at 16.

I paint my nieces always have! Even when they were babies. Their parents were always afraid to cut their nails. Drove me crazy! I cut their nails buff them and paint them. Great thing to use is Sally Hansen quick dry (think that's what it's called) Dries them in like one minute... Wash their hands when nail polish is dry. They love it! When they stay the night at my house we paint every time! have fun.

I painted my daughter's toe nails fairly young.
They actually make polish, I think hers was Barbie polish or something, that actually peels or just wears off. It worked great for her because she had really ticklish feet and rubbing her toes with polish remover wasn't going to happen. Plus, it was non toxic and all that good stuff. It was definitely just for play and dress up. She loved it.

I have two girls, 5 & 2. I started painting the older one's toenails when she was roughly two or just before, but it's not a constant thing I do. I started painting her fingernails just this past October when my sister sent her some orange and black nail polish for fun. However, when the younger of the two saw how much "fun" it was she has started asking for "toe pretties" whenever she sees nail polish. For fun, I have painted the younger ones toes here and there, but just a scant one coat is all, she loves it. I figure it's not that big of a deal since it's not a constant for either girl.

My girls were toddlers. I never bothered with non-toxic (I just didn't do it until I was sure they would no longer put their toes in their mouths! :) As a treat, I will sometimes bring my girls with me to the nail salon when I'm getting my nails done. They love it.

I wanted to when my girls were about 8 mo., but didn't. They came home one day from Mamaws and SIL had painted them. I wasn't upset, but I wanted to be the one to do it first :(
We have mostly just done toes, but occasionally have done fingers. I noticed yesterday that my SIL had done their fingers and toes with a glittery polish that is otherwise clear. EEwww! and does she even know how hard that is to get off of little toe and finger nails? I hate glitter polish!

I think she was older 2's or 3, but she never had an issue with sucking a finger, so I wasn't worried about her ingesting anything. She is 5 now & still has a hard time sitting still long enough for it to dry & not get ruined. I really don't see the big deal with painting their nails - they are not going to grow up to be sluts or prostitutes if they get a little nail polish here & there. I think people blow it way out of proportion.

ok, I'll be the old fashioned one, My daughter was 5 and we were out of town visiting my sister so her aunt gave her her first mani. and i told my daughter it was a special thing and that it was super special. now she is a few years older and we do it for special occasions like her birthday and when we attend weddings or other special events.

I just feel like if i start off giving them things before they even know to want it that I am robbing them of some meaningful milestones. I know it seems silly over nailpolish but i feel like that sets the tone.

She doesn't have her ears pierced yet either, so that will be a big deal when she actually starts to ask for it .

As for the toxicity, i dunno, you can spend extra on that but just doing it occasionally i think she would be fine.
