Mysterious Bees in Our House

Very odd thing happening in my house. Occasionally I will look up and notice a bee crawling on our family room ceiling. I have no clue where they are coming from! All of our windows have screens, and no holes in the screens. I thought maybe they were coming thru the chimney, but I can't find any gaps in the doors. Anyone ever have this problem, or know who could help us find the source? I hope there's not a nest in our ventilation system!!

What can I do next?

bees do build nests inside a/c's. I just had that happen at a property I manage. Also yellow jackets i've seen nest inside the walls. Not trying to alarm you but I've seen it happen. I hate to say spend money but safer than sorry. Many times bee companies will do a free inspection.

If they are honeybees (or you suspect they are) call a bee keeper. They may be able to help you locate the hive and maybe even relocate it. With honeybees dying off left and right may bee keepers will be happy to take an intact colony off your hands.

If they are yellow jackets get an exterminator...they are nasty and can build nests pretty much anywhere.
Good luck.

At our old house we had them crawling on the walls/floor in the basement. They had a nest under our front porch, and they were making there way into the basement. Look for any openings in porches, garages etc. Look for nests near windows or window peaks. Have a insect company in to see if they can find and get rid of the nest.

I would call a beekeeper and have them come out to take a look. Not to scare you but we had a nest that was in our chimney "fall". Fortunately it happened while we were away for a week. We came home to literally hundreds of bees(fortunately most of them dead all over our first floor.

It could simply be that there is a nest somewhere on the outside of your house and they are flying in when you open the door this has happened to me many times.

find out what kind of bee it is then next time you see one just sit and watch it. It should lead you to the hive.
If it's a honey bee contact a local bee keeper or call the local agriculture coop exchange they might have the name of a few local bee keepers, please do not spray them with anything Honey bees are dieing off by the thousands. Honey Bees are no threat to humans unless you disturb the hive or actually touch one ( ie she's sitting on a blueberry and you reach down and pick it , she's gonna sting you), Without honey bees we have no fruits and vegetables. If the bee keeper can't get them he might suggest a way to get rid of them.

I had them living under my siding last year. And, when autumn hit, we seen the hive up in our maple tree. So, they had two nests! A half of my home is underground and they were coming in through the walls through the siding and ending up in our spare bedroom. I had an exterminator come in and spray them with a special chemical. Once he sprayed the chemical on the bees and they went went back to their nest, the others would die. It cost around $170. I would think that they can build a nest anywhere like maybe in your attic or in your ventilation system.

If I were you, I would contact an exterminator who handles bees and ask for advice to determine where to look to see where their nest might be. It's pretty nippy here in the Midwest, so it's possible the nest may be in your home.

We had wasps get into our walls. I would hear this buzzing and wonder where it was coming from. I figured it out the day we were leaving on vacation for 3 weeks. When we came back, there were dead wasps along all the living room windows and a quarter sized hole in the drywall into the room. We did call an exterminator and he checked outside for the source (along the house) but there was no activity. Looks like that colony died trying to escape the inside of our house. My point being is to check if they might be in your walls, walk around your house looking for bees/wasps flying back and forth to the same point at the house. You may just be able to spray the nest yourself - do at night when the bees aren't active. We had a similar problem at another house this year with wasps - but not inside this time. It was easy to find their location and take care of it ourselves.

I had about 6 wasps in my house in 2 days. I hate them!! They were always in my kitchen. One was in my daughter's room. I called an exterminator and they informed me that unless we know where the nest is, they can't do anything about it. Is pollen high in your area? That is when we have them.
