My Two Year Old Looks Beat Up!!!

My two year old is a mess! I don't know what to do. For full picture, My beautiful youngest daughter has a large strawberry birth mark on the bridge of her nose to begin with. People often confuse it for an injury and ask if she broke her nose or any number of things.

Earlier this week, I was doing the dishes while she and her two older sibs played in the living room and I heard a blood curdling scream. I found her lying by the wood coffee table crying with a black "puncture" looking bruise on her high cheek bone, almost under outside corner of her eye. By morning, her whole eye was black all the way into her nose. It;s still black and purple and green. Out and about, people have been doing some double takes.

Then, tonight, doing the dishes AGAIN, I heard ANOTHER blood curdling scream, and according to her sibs, she nose dived over the arm of a chair onto the wood floor! Now she has a goose egg square in the middle of her forehead with a scrape!!! Her whole forehead is turning black!

To be honest, I'm a little worried what people will think at this point! We have a ton to do this week, a concert and hay ride with older sister's homeschool group, plus normal errands. Their dad's not home, so I can't leave her home...It's a no brainer, I just need to go about our business with a clear conscience and not worry about it, but holy cow! Has this ever happened to any of you? Did anyone accuse you of anything or anything bad happen with your child looking so "injured?"

My daughter has always been super agile, and these are practically her first injuries ever and they're both in the same week!

What can I do next?

My son has done the same thing, but not all at the same time. He had a very bad bruise from a fall at daycare on his cheek. It took 3 months to completely heal. Then a kid threw a toy and nailed him in the middle of his forehead and it bruised immediately. and recently he fell and hit the tile floor, huge goose egg and next thing I knew it was black and blue.. that only only took 2 weeks to heal.

Kids are kids.. they fall, it will be fine.

When my son was 13 months old, he got a blood disorder called ITP. Basically, his blood stopped clotting. So, the morning after getting home from the ER from his diagnosis with strict orders to get him a CT scan if he were to fall hard or hit his head AT ALL, he tripped and fell and hit his head on the kitchen cabinet. His forehead was completely black and blue in the 3 seconds it took for me to pick him up off of the floor. Needless to say, we were headed right back to the ER for a CT scan of his head. Thankfully, he was not bleeding internally, but half of his face and head were bruised for about 6 weeks (because of the disorder, he was not healing quickly). It was awful! His arm was also one huge bruise from the IV he had to have in the hospital. He really looked bad. It was very hard to take him out anywhere without lots of looks from people, but I knew what had really happened and had nothing to be concerned about, so I just had to go about our business and not worry about the looks. We actually couldn't really go anywhere anyway because of his illness. The only place we went was to the children's hospital to the hematology department once per week for blood tests. Other than that, he was barricaded in our living room with no furniture so that he couldn't hurt himself again. It was a life threatening situation for him and very stressful for me!

I know it's hard to think people may be thinking the worst, but you have done nothing wrong, so you have to just ignore the stares. I'm so sorry your baby is hurt! Hope she's all healed up soon. Take care!

Yes, we've had instances like this happen a lot with my middle daughter. Her coordination isn't especially great to begin with and she gets super clumsy during growth spurts. She also will fall a lot and bump into things a lot when she has high anxiety. It's just part of growing up with Autism. So there are times when she looks like she's come through a war zone with goose eggs all over her forehead, hickeys on her arms, scratches up and down her hands, swollen bruises on her legs, and chapped lips to top the cake.

I suppose it's in my favor that half of her injuries occur in school where the teachers can see how clutzy she can be. ;-) It's ridiculous. Luckily she hasn't broken anything. And now that I've written this post I realize how long it's really been since a serious injury, although she did intentionally touch a hot curling iron today after I told her "Leave that curling iron alone, it's new so it gets super hot. It's on right now." ::reaches out and touches hot barrel with 2 fingers anyway:: "OW! I thought dat was off!" ::cue many tears::

Thank God it was with her left hand and she's right-handed?

A.,
I remember my SIL telling me that she actually asked her pediatrician "how many HARD head thunks" her daughter could physically have without ill effect on the brain. lol
Thanks God, kids BOUNCE.
Yours is just bouncing a lot right now!

I have had these situations with my son and when someone asks, I usually reply "yeah...he's been on QUITE a roll lately!" or the like.
Other parents understand. They really do.
On a funny note: my oldest brother seemed to have a giant nose scab on EVERY...SINGLE.....PHOTO until he was about 6 or 7. It's kind of funny to us now. :)

I had a friend whose daughter was learning to walk and tripped, hitting her head on the corner of a coffee table. She hit it at just the right angle that it made a puncture wound in her forehead and had to be taken to the emergency room for stitches. Well of course this did not look good and the hospital called CPS. Yes there was an investigation, but everything was cleared and there was not much hassle after that. This is the worst that could happen to you. People thinking that you maybe hurt your daughter is just what they think. There is no need to shut your daughter indoors until she is all better. Go out and enjoy your plans!

I remember way back when my son was about 3 and we went for his regular check up. As the Dr was checking his reflexes I couldn't help but comment in my defense that his little legs were covered in brusies because it is such an active little guy always jumping off stuff and falling and crawling across rocks and whatever. He just had so many little bruises on his shins and knees. The Dr never batted an eye but said, "I'd be more concerned if he had no bruises cause it would mean he's sitting in front of the tv all day."

This works best right after an injury, but it sounds like you need to get some Arnica oil, gel or cream to use topically on your active daughter. Better yet, a combination of Arnica and St. John's Wort.

These can stop bruising almost before it starts. But even if you put it on days later, it can still help a bruise resolve a lot faster. These are available at any health food store or nutrition center.

A number of years ago, I was butted in the eye/forehead by a young goat, and his horn actually tore the skin just above my upper eyelid. The swelling and bruising were impressive by the time I walked into the house. But I alternated these two oils every 20 minutes, and 4 hours later there was no swelling, no discoloration, and only the small tear and some shallow scuffs on my forehead. That was the most impressive of many times I've used these oils/gels. I always keep some in my medicine cabinet.

I'm more concerned about why you are leaving her alone to do those dishes. I know, I get it. They get hurt. But if I let my daycare kids get hurt like this, I'd be fired. I've learned which ones can be left to play when I leave a room and which ones must come with me and be strapped in a highchair while I do things.

You can't do anything now. But you really need to keep her close to you.
