My Two Old Has Two Little Lumps Behind Her Ear?

They are probably lymph nodes. Do they move? They are a bit soft, not hard? They are probably shaped m ore like lime beans than balls? My sons both have a couple that are always feelable if not visable. They get bigger with infection, including cradle cap, and smaller when they are well again. They actually probably won't swell with an ear infection because that doesn't affect the lymph system.

My daughter had the exact same thing. The doctor said that exiting the womb is not the most sanitary thing and they are just fighting off a little infection. It didn't take long for them to go away. Good luck and congrats!

Are the lumps hard or soft? Does she get agitated when you touch them?

95% of lymph node inflammation is due to infection and can be treated either with time or with medication (if it is a bacterial infection).

Normally, lymph nodes (if this is what these lumps are) are small, squishy, move around freely and are tender when inflamed. When they are hard, fixed to a bone, tendon, etc. is when your doctor may be concerned.

I didn't have a baby with swollen lymph nodes, but when my daughter was 7 weeks old, I found one on my collar bone. Be diligent and follow-up with your doctor. In my case, it was Hodgkins lymphoma. I'm doing really well now, but I really had to follow my instincts and be persistent as none of my blood work triggered any concerns.

The internet will be your worst enemy until you see the pediatrician. I'd advise staying away from it as much as possible so you don't get yourself panicked.

My son had an enlarged lymph node(only on one side though) behind his ear when he was a baby. It was like a hard knot. The doc said that it was normal and he was not concerned. Sometimes they get larger if they are fighting off a virus/infection etc. It is still a good thing to get her checked out. Where do you think the sore came from? If it is an ear infection, she would be pulling at her ear alot, it could be red, and she would not be sleeping well...a lot of night crying. Good Luck!

They should be lymph nodes, harmless. My 10 wk. old has them as well. We asked the doctor about them on our last visit. They are just small, soft round lumps behind his ears. She said it was normal and nothing to worry about. My baby doesn't have any sores. Did Alexis maybe scratch by accident? I know whenever my son has his hands uncovered he winds up with scratches on his face. Good luck and let us know how the doctor visit goes.

My daughter (3 1/2) has had one behind her ear since she was about 18 months. Our doctor checked hers out & said that it is a lymph node that is just larger for some reason. Doctor told us to keep an eye on it & if it does get bigger then to let her know. My daughter has never once had an ear infection but she does have allergies so that my be part of it. The lymph node never bothers her at all

I'm glad to hear that you are getting her checked. One thing to keep in mind is that they might be cysts. I have had matching ones behind my ears off and on for years. I also get them on different parts of my body randomly. They show up and most disappear on their own. Are the lumps hard or soft? If they are 'hard' and can be manipulated they are probably cysts. Just another thing to toss out there and ask your doctor about. I hope your daughter is ok.

Hi - I see you have a lot of answers already, but I just wanted to add that I had swollen lymph nodes behind my ears as a child from allergies. When I started to outgrow the allergies, the swelling went away. I still get swollen lymph nodes in my neck when the trees are pollinating! I think the lymph nodes can also get swollen if there's an injury nearby - whatever she did to get the sore behind her ear (bumped her head a little maybe) that could be what's causing the lymph nodes to swell. Whatever it is I'm sure she's just fine but I understand how easy it is to worry about our little ones! It's good to get it looked to put your mind at ease.

My son, who is 3 now, had these little pea sized lumps on the back of his head/neck as well. MDs said they were just lymph nodes. They didn't bother him at all, even when we touched them. Eventually (maybe by 5-6mo) they went away. No worries!

Take a deep breath so you can focus and stay calm for your and everyones benefit, it may be swollen lymphnodes, just fighting an infection. Happens a lot lately to me.

Try not to worry - I know it is hard, but you are doing the right thing by taking her to the doctor. Even if he says its nothing, it's peace of mind for you.

My Littlest Kevin had the 2 lumps right behind his ears and the doctor put him on Loratadine once a day. Most times it is caused
by an alergy that inflames the lymph nodes. It only took about 2 weeks once we started him on the meds to make them go away. So he
takes his little pill once a day and we have had no other problems.

Agreed-normal. My daughter had two little tiny pea sized bumps on the base of her skull area. Dr. checked 'em said they were a normal occurance and that they would go away. And they did.

Don't get yourself too worked up. Your right it could be something scary in which case you'll have to have it together enough to make decisions. BUT it could be nothing. My friends daughter had some "lumps" behind both of her ears. They turned out to be spots that didn't get the same pigmitation as the rest of her. They are nothing and won't hurt her.

Just try to be calm and get to the dr. Babies get so many weird things and most the time they are NOTHING.

This happened to my sister's little boy who is 10 months old now. The doctor looked at them and told her they are nothing to worry about and will eventually go down and is actually quite common. I forget what he said they were. She even got a second opinion because they did frighten her as well. The 2nd doctor told her the same thing. And sure enough, they are gone now. It's good that you're getting them checked out just to be safe. And keep an eye on them to make sure they don't get bigger.

Don't worry! My son was born with little lumps like that too one on each side and the doctor assured us there is nothing wrong. He is now 20 months old, and last week we noticed another one in his neck and the two that have always been there were bigger. I completely panicked and we rushed to the ER, he was also crying in pain so we were thinking the worst! He had an ear infection, and upper respitory infection and the Dr. said the "knots" are babies ways of trying to fight infection, that they're lymph glands will get swollen larger when they are sick. He was put on antibiotics, and three days later you can't feel them at all. So your baby was probably born with the same thing as my son. And you'll have nothing to worry about. I know it's scary, as a mommy your mind races all over the place, but I'm sure your little girl is fine!! Good luck, and try to relax until your appointment, it will be okay :)
