My Two and a Half Year Old Is Studdering.

My son just started studdering while talking a couple of weeks ago. He studders when he is trying to pronounce his w's and t's. Is this something that is normal and will grow out of or should I have him looked at by his doctor? Up until a couple of weeks you could understand him and his speech was good.

What can I do next?

My daughter who is 3.5 stutters here and there. It started at the age of 2 and my initial thought was speech problems but it is actually pretty common. According to where I was doing my research it was 1 in 5 kids between 2 and 5 stutter. Many things can cause it stress from potty training to moving to death of someone close plus many others. Or it could just be something they do with no given reason. As for my daughter around the age of 2 she started having problems going to the potty (constipated) and when this would happen she would start to stutter then for weeks she would be fine and out of nowhere she would stutter again. I corrected her at first but with doing research it suggests not bringing attention to it. One being you know kids do stuff for attention anyways so if they see you pay attention more when they do it they will continue and also for some of the older kids if it is pointd out it may be embarass them

My daughter started to stutter at about the same age. I didn't notice that it was just with w's and t's. When I read up on it, I read that it was normal. Her thoughts were created faster than she could express. All the articles said that you should not tell your child to slow down and do not finish their sentences for them, and that you should just patiently wait for them to get it out.

She is 4 1/2 now and does not stutter at all.

Studdering is normal. Emphasize speaking slowly, and calmly. You child will get the hang of it.
As soon as he begins Pre K or Kindergarten make sure you have a speach pathologist see him on a daily basis. He is rather young to understand the proper placement of his tongue.
Good luck and don't fret it's normal.
Read often to him and set a good example. DON"T make fun, or ridicule.
Best wishes.

I would talk to your doctor. My nephew went to Head Start to help him lose his studder. By the time he went to school it was gone. I would definitely start working on it now because that is something that could affect his self confidence in school. Good luck.

Hi J. :) My cousin also stuttered for a short period around that age... and his speech is just fine now. From what I have read it is common for children to stutter a bit when their speech is developing and in most cases they grow out of it. You could probably call your doctor just to get his/her opinion but he will probably grow out of it.

My son, at 2 1/2 - 3, stuttered so bad that he would cover his mouth while he was stuttering. He actually became quite shy because of it. I took him to the elementary school that he will attend kindergarten at and had him evaluated by the speech pathologist. She said that stuttering between 3-4 is VERY common for children. She told me DO NOT stop him and make him slow down, that will just hurt his development. Do not laugh or correct him. They told me that the best thing that you can do is for you and everyone else to make sure that you speak slowly and clearly to him. That will teach him by example how to clear up the stutter. It goes away...my son is now just over 4 and smart as a whip. The stutter is completely gone.
Thanks!

Hi J.,
My son has the same issue. His pediatrician told me that he would grow out of it-he has not. He is almost 4 now and has to begin speech therapy in September. His stuttering is so bad it sometimes takes him minutes to get out his first word. He started out only stuttering over a few words and now it is almost every word. My advice to you would be to find out what is offered in your area for him to begin now instead of later when he is in preschool like my son. Good Luck!!

My son started to do that when he was in a hurry to say something. But he would repeat everything he was saying over and over again before he'd be done saying what he wanted. But if he is studdering with his w's and t's Id talk to his doctor before it got to bad. I just tell my son to stop and think about what he is saying and to calm down. I hope all works out for you.
