My son is 3 years old and has been day potty trained for 6 months now with no accidents since during the day. He isnt potty trained at night, he doesnt wake up to go to the bathroom yet in the night so he still wears a diaper or pull up to bed. My problem is that he is so thirsty during the day, he use to use a sippy cup all day but I have cut him down to one sippy cup at breakfast and a regular glass the during the day since he doesnt chug that like a sippy cup. Well he is starting to drink a lot out of a cup now and more often. I cant not let him drink during the day since he is so thirsty all day. He has been peeing through his pull up at night lately and Im getting tired of changing and washing the sheets so often. There are nights he wakes up dry also. I guess my question is since I have cut his drinking back as much as I think I can how can I get him to stop peeing at night through the pull up???

He couuld have an allergy. Start by taking all artificial flavors and colors out of his diet. This is not easy but it worked for my kids.

Hi L.,
Pull ups never worked for us at night time. We had to use a diaper with both my son and daughter. My son was day time potty trained around 2.5 yrs but was almost 4 before he was dry all night consistantly. My friends son is almost 5 and still not.

Your son is only 3. I wouldn't worry too much yet. Just switch to a regular diaper at nighttime. And I agree with waking him up when you go to bed to have him go potty. Just walk him out and have him go...he'll be mostly asleep and it'll take a few seconds for him to go but it will probably help. He'll fall right back to sleep.

How much is he drinking during the day? Active little boys are thirsty but it isn't anything excessive, right? Just wondering if there could be a possibility of Type I diabetes???

Good Nites have been wonderful! My 3-yr-old son would potty thru the sheets quite often at night, but hasn't had one accident since we started using Good Nites awhile back! It is totally worth the cost. I have not tried Underjams, but I'm sure they are good too. Good luck!

Hi L., How long has your son been so thirsty? Both of my kids have Type 1 diabetes and excessive thirst and frequent urination were the signs for us to have them tested.

Before you do more on cutting back on fluids, I would consider getting him tested.

L.,

Regular Pull Ups never worked well for us at night either, but we had better luck with the Night Time version. Huggies makes one for boys that worked better for us.

Good luck!

I have the EXACT same problem. What helps us is we were using the Huggies Good Night pullups. But he has outgrown those - so now we use the Pamper's Under Jams or the Huggies Overnights (they are white and gray and have 15 per pack in the size small). They work wonderful and we hardly ever have any accidents. They are more expensive - but so worth it! We also really limit his liquid intake after 6:30 and make sure he goes to the bathroom at least twice before bed.

Good Luck!

From my experience with our son. Pull-ups just don't cut it! (they work great for our daughter but not him) Don't take his drinks away or if anything more water and less juice/milk. He needs the fluids. We still use diapers at night. Try some other brands of night time pull up underwear. Different brands hold more, or less. I am not sure what brands as we chose to just stick with diapers.

Try getting him up in the middle of the night to go potty. Hopefully eventually he will start to do it by himself and his body will becomed trained.

Don't take away his drinks, but maybe stop them an hour before bedtime and be sure he pees before goes to sleep? If he's a sound sleeper, you could also wake him up in the middle of the night and take him to the potty and then back to bed. Or you could put 2 pullups or a diaper and a pullup on him to not pee through.

We have the same problem with my 4 year-old son. So, we let him drink whatever he wants during the day, but start limiting the amounts at dinner and after that. We make sure he goes to the bathroom before he goes to bed, and we use "Goodnights" or "Underjams" to help prevent leaking--which have worked much better than the pullups or even better than the nighttime pullups.

We have the exact same problem w/ our just turned 3yo boy. I hate to spend all that money on pull up and have to wash sheets every day. I just bought a waterproof matress pad but haven't tried it yet. I was thinking of going back to diapers since he rarely leaked w/ those and he still doesn't do #2 on the potty (he waits till he gets a pull up at night). I feel bad though b/c his baby sister wears diapers and it might make him regress. I know it will take time for him to be dry, I'm just happy he makes it all day and during naps!

You can't. Your son is only 3 years old. Lots of boys are still daytime training at that age! He will wake up dry when he is ready to do so. For now, be patient with him. You can certainly limit his liquids before bed, but that may or may not make a difference. It's very normal to not be nighttime trained until 5 years old.

Hang in there,
J.
