My son wants eye/lasik surgery, any recommendations and advice?
My son who is 23 and wants to join the police force but feels his eyesight will hinder him wants to get lasik surgery. Obviously, I am very nervous and I want someone who knows what they are doing. I would really appreciate any recommendations for dr. in Metro area, or Staten Island would be awesome and any advice on what to ask and look for.
Thanks in advance.

Hi M.,

I had the procedure in February of this year at TLC, located 115 E. 57th St, 16th Fl ###-###-####). I had intralase, which is the fully laser procedure (no scalpel). It is expensive but definitely so worth it. I've worn glasses since I was 7 so the feeling of being able to wake up in the morning and actually see, is amazing!!

TLC was great. I did all my follow up visits with my regular eye doctor though. My eye Dr. also recommended Mandell Vision on the upper East side. I met with both, but got a much better feeling about TLC. Pricing was comparable.

I do suggest that you speak with your son's regular optician first to see who he/she recommends and if they think your son would be a good candidate. Then there's no harm in going for a couple of consultations to learn more about it.

Good luck.

I had Lasik June 2000 at TLC on 57th St. with Dr. Speaker! I was not that bad (-2) but I am SO HAPPY I can live wihtout contacts!! After that I encouraged 3 friends to do it. I watched one of the procedures (if you want to watch TLC will let you, but have son wait until AFTER his is done to see procedure=kinda scary to watch) ALSO have him ASK for sedative (valium) they don't give them out but if you ask they will and I KNOW it totally helped to be relaxed.

Hi M.,
I have had the Lasik eye surgery myself and it is the best thing that I could have ever done. I did it back in 2001 right before I got married and went to Dr. Dello Russo. He is the doctor that invented this procedure. When I had it done he was on the higher end side of fees but I did not want to shop around when it came to my eye and a client of mine who was an eye doctor/surgen, highly recommended Dello Russo. So that made me feel even better that a doctor in the profession recommnended him. There are many different payment methods and they will work with you to get one that works best for you. But you can check him out your self at www.njeye.com. He also has a number of different locations. Hope this helps.

I would highly recommend Chelsea Eye Center http://www.chelseaeye.com/ I had custom lasik there a year ago and was happy with their service, very comfortable with the surgery and and very pleased with the results. Not the least expensive option out there but worth the investment!

Hi M.,
I also had lasik done in 2004 by Dr. DelloRusso. My vision was really bad (-10) and I only had average corneal thickness. It was the best thing I ever did. Going from such bad vision to being able to see without glasses is amazing. DelloRusso does it completely with the laser. Definitely go to someone that has done many many procedures. Experience counts. I highly recommend Dr. DelloRusso.
