My Son Has an Unexplained Rash

My 6 yr old was sent home from school yesterday because he had a light rash on his face and torso. Today, it has spread to behind his ears, neck, diaper area, upper buttocks but is not on his arms and legs. There are no blisters on his hands, feet or in his mouth. The rash is pretty flat, maybe the slightest raise on some of them and are not crusty or blistered. My son has not had a fever and is acting perfectly normal. He is non-verbal and so has not told me that he is itchy or uncomfortable but he is not acting as if he is. What the heck could this be? The school said he can't return without a doctor's note but with three small children, going to the dr is no easy task. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Never did go to the Dr. I'm kinda' old fashioned that way... unless my kid is sick and I know the docs can actually do something, I prefer to save the time, stress and money. Anyhoo, all is well. The rash cleared up on its own. Within 2 days it was gone completely. Gotta remember to trust my instincts. If the kid isn't sick, it's probably "just a rash". I let school nurses and other "expert" opinions get me worried sometimes. I called the teacher on Tuesday, told her he was fine and she said to bring him in, doctor's note or not. I did and the school nurse never did say anything. So glad I didn't waste my time, energy, or my husband's time and money to go to the doctor. The human body is resilient and most of the time will fight off whatever it is with some good, old -fashioned rest and time. Thanks for all of the great ideas! Nice to know this board is out there.

It could have been something he has come in contact with from another child or something at school. I would try putting a cup to two of oatmeal in his bath water. Let him soak in it and see if this takes the rash away.
Have you changed detergent, or fabric softener, he may be sensitive where the others are not. Or if something was changed in his lunch. Think over what other than detergent that he may have at that day and perhaps you may find the solution. Again I would use the oatmeal bath, its amazing how it works. Good luck and I hope he gets back with his little friends at school. I would only put cotton clothing on him for now, something loose. As well ask the school if any other children have had a break out. It almost sounds like a heat rash to me, you have explained areas' that sweat would be. Try the loose clothing and the bath.

Not to freak you out, it's only because I've been reading up on another issue and I came across this, but it could be a parasite. It's worth looking into. Hopefully I'm way wrong though:)

I believe many viruses can cause rashes. Often times the Docs don't known either and it will just go away. Do you have a nurses line to call at your doctors office?

Probably is a viral rash...if it doesn't go away by Monday then yeah take him in...

I caught a viral rash thing from my kids...they all had just a weird rash no other symptoms. Then I had the rash too and felt fine. It all cleared in about three days.

Just make sure it "blanches" when you press on it. Use a glass and press against his skin and look at the rash it should get pale and then gain the color back...if ti doesn't it could be a more serious thing.

I would take him to the doctor. When I had scarlet fever, I did not have a noticeable fever, but the rash is still dangerous. I still had to stay home from work for a week and take medicine. Take him to the doc to be sure!

I am having the exact same issue today with my 22 month old daughter. When she got up this morning there was absolutely nothing out if the ordinary and then as I was taking her shirt off for a nap (she prefers to sleep in just her diaper) I noticed a rash all over the top of her back - this is where its at its worse. Then I turned on the light to check the rest of her and sure enough its on her chest, the bends of her arms her sides, on her thighs, and the tops of her feet. She also appears to have a bit on her cheeks. I checked her temp and she is normal, she also hasnt complained of anything and the rash doesnt appear to be bothering her at all. I was going to post this question myself to see if any other mothers had any insight on what could be causing this rash but I will piggy back off your answers - if thats okay =)
I hope your son gets better =)

Take him to the Doctor or Urgent Care or ER, today.
Find a way for someone to babysit your kids.

Take a PHOTO of it, because what if by Monday, the rash disappears????
Then what?

From yesterday until Monday, that is a long time to wait.

My son had the same thing and the doc told us that it was a viral rash. If the rash is like red dots around certain areas, that's what it could be. But with no fever, I'm not sure. My son had a fever with his rash. It took the rash about 7 days to clear up. It passed along to my toddler too. The heat from outside makes them more prominant. Definitely go see the doc. It's probably a viral rash, but better to be certain. :-)

My kids have had rashes from allergic reactions from medicines, food allergies, laundry soaps and shampoos. I don't think they've ever gotten a rash from being sick. I hope you figure it out and it goes away soon. Good luck!

I am sorry you are going to have to take him. I have no idea. Unfortunately, you may never know. But the school isn't going to change their policy about the note. Or, maybe since it's the weekend it will go away. Have you tried benadryl?

I recently had something I didn't even know existed, a yeast rash on my skin. (On me, it was on my chest, stomach and ribs, down to my hips.) You might have the dr check it. Or, you could buy some OTC anti-fungal (maybe athlete's foot spray) and see if it helps.

You are right in that it is probably not something to worry about and a big pain to you. BUT if it is 5ths disease, that can be harmful to pregnant women. That is just one possible scenario and even though these things are unlikely and the probability very small schools tend to be very conservative about these things. It is inconvenient, but if the worst case scenario DID happen, that little inconvenience could possibly prevent a devastating situation.

Hi. I haven't read any responses, so excuse me if I am repeating anyone else's thoughts.:)

Has your son been on amoxacillin (sp), penicillin, etc...? Both of my daughters are allergic to any derivative of penicillin and will break out in what they call a "penicillin rash". It sounds exactly the same. You can try giving him some benadryl and see if that helps. Best of luck!

Hi there!

I just came down with pityriasis rosea. It began on my stomach and has spread upwards to my neck, lower to my groin, and out to my wrists. It didn't start out itchy, but 2 weeks in, it torments me.

Fairly common in the fall, it is not contagious and lasts up to 12 weeks.

Best regards!

Our school is the same way children are not allowed at school with a rash unless they have a doctors note it's understandable so many illnesses can have a rash with it.

Hi.
My son also had a similar rash. The dr. said it is most likely a reaction to an antibiotic he was taking. However, he also said that sometimes children get viral rashes for no reason. If he had a fever and was acting normally, it could be that from what our dr. said (and we go to the top dr. where I live! he established the children's ward at a nearby hosptial...).

I would just make sure to treat it gently. give plenty of water. and see how it is monday. if it gets itchy, you can ask a nurse about benadryl or something simialr.
hope this helps.
