My Son Got Sunburned!

We went to the zoo today and covered my son from head to toe in suntan lotion. He wears a hat and he still got burned. Anyway, I was wondering what are some good ideas of what to put on it to help him be a little more comfortable. Right now he doesn't seem to have too much of a issue with it, more scratching than anything so I don't want to give him tylenol or anything like that, just something topical.
Thanks!

Hi Mary!
Sunblock has to be put on indoors at least 15 minutes before going into the sun. It needs time to blend in and activate. If you put it on outside -- won't work. AVEENO makes a very nice 45SPF with a soy base. My son has sensitive skin and this works better than others which give him a rash.
Good luck!

Boil 2 cups of water, and place four black tea bags (like Lipton's) in there and steep for about 15 minutes. Cool in fridge and apply liberally with cotton ball. The Tannic acid in tea takes the sting, and redness out of sunburn. Then I would just apply aloe the following few days. This worked great for my son...my relatives, all dark skinned people took my son to a boat outing when he was 1 1/2 ...although I sent sun block no one bothered to apply it. I was furious...he looked like a lobster when he got home. I remembered my mother doing this for my sister when she was a teenager who refused to wear sunblock to a beach outing with freinds...she was peeling and blistered...and it worked like a charm...she is very fair skinned and healed right up from it. Tea also has amazing anti oxidants in it that will fight some odf the skin damage. I hope this helps.

Aloe Vera with extra moisturizer is good. Also, honestly with all the risks involved with childhood burning I would call my pediatrician and ask what is best along with going to a health food store like whole foods or wild oats and ask them if they have any supplements for combating burns. I also was gonna get something in case but I realized I already had a cream. It comes from melaleuca - I sell the stuff but if you want it just let me know. It has a cooling effect so it kind of numbs the skin a bit from that itchy painful feeling. Hope he feels better whatever you decide.

I'm not sure how it would work for babies, but white vinegar works WONDERS. You can actually feel the heat coming through the rag. It doesn't smell the greatest. I got burned in Mexico once and the owner of a restaurant told us about it.

Good luck. I'm reading the suggestions you get. We are leaving for Colorado next Monday.

Hi Mary,

I would suggest Sun Shades, After Sun Hydrogel E, (it's 7 times more soothing than Aloe Vera. Depending on where you are located, I would be happy to drop some off to you today. I live in Oak Park, IL and my phone number is ###-###-####.

I belong to a wholesale shopping club that only carries environmentally safe, non-caustic products and that's the only place you can get Sun Shades After Sun Hydrogel E. They also have an awesome Sun Shades 30+ and a 45+ Sun Block, which I would also recommend for any future outings. My son NEVER burned with the sun block. In fact, one time, I remember I coated him, or so I thought, before we went to the beach. There was a little triangle on his back that apparently I missed when putting the Sun Block on him and that little triangle was sun-burned...NOTHING ELSE...so I know that it works.

Sometimes, if the Suntan Lotion or Sun Block that you use is past it's expiration date, it won't work as well...perhaps that's what happened in your case.

Please feel free to contact me today, if you want to try the Sun Shades Hydrogel E. I really don't mind giving it to you...I am happy to help someone in need, if I have the resources.

Finally, back when I was a teenager and a lifeguard, I always got really burned the first day on the job and a friend of my M.'s suggested putting vaseline all over and sleeping with the vaseline. It's very messy and you do have to wash your sheets after one night, however, it is SO worth it because the next day, not only did my sunburn not hurt, it was gone and I was tan instead. Great, since I had to go right back to work at the beach.

Probably a little late for you but astringent works well. Just get some noczema or whatever kind and put it on. It really seems to take the pain away. Also, Aloe Vera gel.

Aloe Vera works terrific and helps cool the skin and takes the edge off the itching. You can give it to him warm but we put it in the fridge and then apply it.

Noxema always worked the best for me when I was really sunburned, to alleviate the pain and itching. The cooling sensation really makes it better. Aloe and vitamin E lotion works for helping to heal it/making it not peel as much.

Mary:
As most others have suggested, it is important to put a sunscreen on before going out and one that is made for children (no oils, chemicals, fragrances, etc.). It must be 40SPF minimum for young children, no matter what skin color. I too have 3 children with blonde hair and very light skin. I use a natural and botanical product I get thru the internet that is unbelievable! I have had so many mothers ask how my children don't get burned and I am proud to tell them.

Pure aloe vera and Vitamin E oil/lotion are very helpful to heal the skin. Believe it or not, by the time we reach the age of 18, we have done the most damage to our skin for the rest of our life. So, it is imperative that we keep our children (and ourselves) protected from the worst enemy - the sun. My kids are older now and truly understand the importance of putting on a good sunscreen. Good job with keeping a hat on as well. The summer sun, even though it may be overcast, is very harming to all of us. Have fun but be safe! Email me if you want more information.

Like many others, I recommend aloe to soothe the sunburn.

To help in the future, our son has very fair skin. His dermatologist recommended NoAd sunscreen for babies which you can buy at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Walmart. Also, there are many summer clothes that have a sun rating. I recommend those from One Step Ahead.

Good luck!

When I was little, my M. always used cold coffee. It does work. It takes the sting out. She would just make a pot of coffee and then put ice cubes in it. Take your rag and get it soaked and place on the baby till the rag is warm and then repeat until the coffee is gone.
