My one month old just started to have this nasty cough, he coughs so hard he gags. When I first had him his sister who is 13 months had a cold and we started to see him get a stuffy nose, then we went for the two week follow up and my doctor informed me that he just sounds like that because the majority of his time is spent lying on his back, so this weekend his cough started sounding like a smokers cough (yea its that bad) and he starting gagging after he has a really hard cough. he doesnt have a fever, but he does feel a little warm other than that he seems fine no constipation no vomit, I'm just really lost because my 13 month old at this age didnt have any of this no this is new to me

What can I do next?

Take him to the doctor ASAP. It sounds like maybe it could be pertussis or RSV, which is bad news for a little guy. His immune system is so new that he hasn't had a chance to build up immunity, or even have vaccinations yet. He needs to see a doctor.

I hope all is okay - please let us know!

I would take him back to the doctor. Whooping cough is going around and is very serious in an infant. My vaccinated 9yr old daughter was diagnosed with it in August and is still coughing.
(Go on YouTube and watch what whooping cough sounds like in an infant. If he sounds anything like that go to the ER). FYI... My daughter's cough got progressively worse over 6 days and she never had a fever. She started out coughing at night and in the early morning. She did not get the Whooping sound until she was about 2 wks past her antibiotic treatment. She would cough so hard though that her face turned bright red and her eyes teared. When we went to the doctor they diagnosed her with walking pneumonia but did the culture for whooping cough at my suggestion. 2 days later the doctors office called us with the correct diagnosis.

I would call your pediatrician and describe the cough to him/her. One month old is too young to rely on the responses of strangers on a board. RSV can be a very serious illness in babies.

Whooping cough or the croup.....either way, call his pediatrician and get to the ER. He's to little to tolerate it.

Is there an on call nurse at your pediatricians office you can call and chat with? With whooping cough going around, plus pneumonia and bronchitis a possibility, you really don't want to mess around with a cough this bad. If you can't get ahold of of the nurse, then I suggest you take the advice of others, and go the the ER or an urgent care, because you don't really want to mess around with a cough like like in a baby so young.

Good luck.

About the same age my son had croup, so take him to the doctor. I know, pretty scarey, but again, yes. I will never forget it and he is twenty two now.

Go to the ER, he needs a lung xray. I would go now, babies shouldnt be coughing up mucus, he could have trouble breathing in his sleep.

call your pedi NOW and/or get to an ER NOW. seriously, i am not an alarmist, and we don't go to the DR much, i am a "let it run it's course" type of mom, but that symptom at that age could be "nothing", and it could be deadly, babies that young can go downhill FAST, they can also recover FAST with proper treatment - don't waste time, don't wait til morning - this is a true emergency. please update us!
