My Menstral Cycle Is Killing Me!

Ok Ladies I could really use some womanly help here. Even since my son was born in Nov. 2005 my menstral cycle has been a nightmare. We have switched insurances and my gyn. that I love dearly is not covered and I have gone to a couple of different ones for advice and they all tell me "Just give it some time. Your body has gone through a huge change and it will take a while to get it back"!! Well I am writing you because I am tired of it and hope some of you can help.
Ever since my son was born my cycle is VERY HEAVY. I mean I go NO WHERE for more than a hour and always carry a change of clothes in my truck. I have no cramps but the first 3 days are aweful. Then the last 2 days are little. When I sit at home I need to use a towel underneath me just in case and when I sleep I have a whole routine including sleeping with a towel and get up in the middle of the night to change my pad. I have no use for tampons anymore it is straight to the heavy pads and the overnight for night time. I feel like a prisioner sometimes and I know that is only for a few days but I am getting sick of it. It was never this bad before I had my son. If you have any ideas or need more information I will tell you and I thank you for taking the time to read this and responding if you can!!

Candy O:In responce to your question My son Shane died in me at 40 weeks. I was due on Oct. 31. I went to the dr's on Nov. 1 because I could not feel him moving like usual they could not find a heart beat. I had to deliver him naturally and it took about 2 days. The cord was wrapped aroung his neck.

What can I do next?

I'm not a doc but my sister has endometriosis and her symptoms are similar. It can get worse after childbirth, sometimes not even noticeable symptoms until after a few kids and aging. I would definitely keep asking docs for help and seeing diff docs til you get some help, because it is NOT normal for that to continue indefinitely. I couldn't say when it should stop.

ask about taking the pill, some can slow your flow and make it shorter. women in my family have complained that after having children their period became a lot worse also.

Wow oh my gosh I just want to say I am so sorry to hear what you have gone through. I can't even imagine. I hope you and your family are ok. I don't even know what to say. I am sorry also about your period. Even before I had kids I had a very heavy cycle. I would have to wear an extra heavy tampon, overnight pad, my husband's boxers and pajama pants just to make sure I didn't stain my sheets. I just recently this December got the Mirena IUD. It is supposed to lighten your period and evertually possibly eliminate it altogether.Since I have gotten it though I have not stopped spotting, which is normal, and I also get cramps, which I never got before. But I haven't had to wear tampons once! So overall I can deal with the spotting just to not have that feeling of bleeding through a tampon in an hour and a half! The IUD is good for 5 years too, so I don't have to worry about taking a pill every day, which I always took before.
God bless your little angel Shane I am so sorry and enjoy your toddler. I'm sure you know more than anyone to enjoy these days with them.

I thought I was the only one! When I had my first child 8 years ago, the exact same thing happened to me. It took years before I found a doctor who took the time to really listen to what I was saying. In the interim I had another child which did not make matters better. But with the help of my new doctor I have found a birth control pill that at least controls the flow enough to where I'm not running from bathroom to bathroom with the fear that I have leaked and I'm walking around with everyone staring at me. Although I still sleep with a towel covering the sheets, I can make it through the night with an overnight pad (as long as I go right to the bathroom when I get up and change it) and I can go about an hour and half with a super plus tampon. The only thing that I don't like about the current pill I am on, is that I didn't have cramps before and now I do. But this is still a work in progress and may end up changing pills again. Talk to your doctor about trying the pill, even if you plan on having another child, you can always stop the pill when you are ready. Good Luck.

First I want to tell you I am sorry for your lost that is a very hard thing for any women to go through..Then Go back to your Dr. you like and ask him/her to join your ins. We asked our dr and he did so as we didn't have to change dr.'s You may need a DNC done..I would say that you have a medical problem...The other DR.'s are not seeing this as a problem??? That worries me..Go to your DR I am sue they will join your ins.. that way you can have a Dr. that will atleast listen and look into your problem instead of brushing it off..Did they do a DNC on you after the baby wae born?? You will be in my thoughts and prayers on this..Please let us know how you make out??

As I was reading what some of the others wrote to you..I was thinking how about the DEPO shot that one gets every 3 months it has been known to stop your period all together..

Hi, N.,
I think your best bet will be your doctor. Even though you switched insurances, one visit to the doctor you trust should be worth all the money you will pay for the visit.

You may also consider Merena, an IUD, that is if you don't plan on having another child immediately. It is supposed to help with heavy bleeding. In 10% of cases, there is no bleeding at all, but I wasn't one of them. My cycle too got heavier after the baby, not as bad as you describe, but enough to be annoying.

Word of caution: Merena is partially hormonal, and expect to have some cramps when it is inserted. I almost fainted, but it all went away eventually.

Another place to go for help may be an acupuncturist. They may help, too.

Hi N.--

I had the same thing and tried Murina which didn't really work becuase then I just had a little bit of period every day -- not my idea of a fix--

So i ended up having Thermal Ablation-- They corterize (sp?) your uterus so that you do not produce as much blood --

You can only have the procedure if you are finished having kids but I got to tell you it is awesome

It was one or two days of discomfort and I haven't had ANY period in two years--

amazing--the doctor said it could come back in a few years but this is awesome
--

I can't imagine loosing a child and he is in my prayers-- Hope you find some relief.

If your cycle is really that bothersome (and it certainly sounds horrible), I would find a gyn that does a procedure called a thermal ablation, or consider going on a low dose birth control pill to help your cycle. Good luck. I'm very sorry to hear about your son.

I had my third 2 years ago,and I have been in the same boat since then! It's been awful,I feel like I got hit by a truck every month, and it's not only heavy flow,it's headaches and egsaustion also. I'm 39,so my mom suggested it may be pre-menapause. I don't know your age,so I have no idea if that's possible for you. I know there are some birth control pills that help, but I don't do well on those,so it's not an option for me. It didn't go away or slow down though, and it's been almost 3 years. I don't go out either during those first few days, and my total period now lasts over 7 days instead of my usual 5 or so. My mom says she was the same way in her late thirtys,so maybe that happens to some women? Either way it is awful, and I would say keep asking the Gyn,and hang in there!
