So we have a new little kitten, he is only 9-10 weeks old and just a little furball and sweet as can be... but...... he has HORRALBE gas! I mean worse than hard boiled eggs, the little thing can clear a room and then the smell drifts throughout the house! I look around thinking that he just used the bathroom, no... no bathroom but just the smell of it. Over the weekend I was holding him and he cut one and I about got sick. I swear it smelled like he pooped all over me! Any ideas?!?!?!

What can I do next?

Hi, I used to be a vet tech and often when a kitten changes food or eats a low qyality food (corn products as the first 2 ingredients, meat should be the first ingredient) it can cause gas. Canned food also causes gas and other issues as well.
dont be tempted to give your kitten milk that really causes upset stomach. I suggest ROYAL CANIN dry kitten food, it really eliminates fecal odor and waste and makes the coat really soft and resistant to shedding.

Hehehe...you made me laugh out loud today;o) Like the response below, it is probably worms. Sometimes it takes several treatments to get rid of them. Also, I swear by Iams. The better quality the food the better smelling your kitty box will be, and not to mention, umm...the poots.

Hi J.,

Oh my goodness! That poor little kitten and poor you!! We have an old dog that can clear a house with her flatulence, so I can relate. Peeeeeeeeeeyewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

Have you called your Vet.? My suggestion is to change his diet. Many "pet foods contain beans, bran, whole wheat and fat and these are difficult for the digestive system to break down. As a result, these and other ingredients collect in the colon and ferment, causing large amounts of gas."

I checked with a book I have entitled Symptom Solver for Dogs and Cats. On page 147 it says, "A gassy pet is often a worm-infested pet." This was stated by Dr. John Brooks, DVM from Fork, Maryland. "Tapeworms and roundworms are often to blame because they irritate the lining of the intestine and interfere with proper digestion." The book said to collect a fresh stool sample and take your kitten to a vet. Flatulence that occurs frequently should always be checked with a vet.

Other than worms, giving milk can cause problems because many pets lack the enzyme to digest it. Food allergies can be a problem too.

Good luck!

T.

I'm a long time cat lover and I know what you are talking about. My vet told me some cats are allergic to chicken, so try getting food without chicken in it. Stay away from canned food for a while. You can wet the dry food with a little water if the kitten still has trouble chewing. Just keep playing with different brands until you can find one that works for your kittie. You might try the kittie on one that doesn't have any chicken product in it. It will get better when you find the right food.

They also sell foods for animals with sensitive stomachs - we used to have a cat that had to be on the sensitive stomach food or he had bad gas and diahrea.

Sometimes kitten food has dairy in it. If you can find one without it it will make a HUGE difference. His little tummy just can't handle it.

My Mom had a cat for years with this problem and vet after vet could not figure it out. He would fart so bad when you pick him up that we thought he just didn't like to be picked up and had some skunk in him - ha ha. Finally when we moved here she took the cat to a vet in Flower Mound - I can't remember the name but it's near 1171 & 2499 - send me a message and I'll get it for you from her. Anyway, they discovered that he had an intestinal problem and were able to clear it (I think through medication not surgery) - no gas ever since. All that time he was in pain everyday and she didn't know it. 5 years she went without an answer to the problem and he recently passed at age 15. So he was 10 year gas free. : )

One other thought - Our dog gets terrible gas, but ONLY when we give him soft treats. The hard, dry dog bones don't cause a bit of trouble. But the soft, meaty ones do it every time. You've received a lot of good advice. I'll bet your kitty will smell as sweet as he looks before long!

Change the food you are feeding the kitten. Remember the old saying "garbage in garbage out". Well the same works for our food. Most of the pet foods on the market are so full of "fillers" that there is very few atual nutrients that the animal's body can use. Cats are carnivors and were not meant to be herbavors. After a certain age they also become lactose intolerant. I would suggest try changing the kind of food you use for the kitten and see if that helps.

I don't know anything about cats but I do have 3 dogs. We have found that certain foods will cause gas. For instance,,,if mine have a bite of raw apple the result will be runny poop, cucumbers cause awful gas.

I try to keep them on their regular food with no human food treats except for a small hot dog bite a couple times a day. My dogs also love the little baby carrots for snack but if the poodle eats one...he throws up.

have you wormered the kitty? worms may cause intestinal issues. change in diet? maybe the food he is on is not the best choice. petsmart carries a cranberry..digestive liquid for cats. i had given it to my old cat when he was constipated and changed his cat food. it did the trick. good luck.

Our cats used to have gas when they were kittens. It was so bad so I know what you are talking about! We cut out all milk products and it went away. They would even sneak milk out of my toddler's cereal bowl since she was too little too know better! So if you give it milk as a treat or if it sneaks it from other places :-) stop doing that and see if that helps.

Cats sometimes do that when their food is changed but also if they don't have the best quality food. We feed our cats Iams and they have less waste that way too.

Could possibly be his food. Our new little puppy had bad gas and once I changed his food he got better. Try that first!

I had a cat with the same issue. We took him to the vet and she put him on some expensive cat food. It did not work all that well. I have since switched my cats to Healthful Life, Purina Cat Chow. It has made a huge difference and I dont have to clean the litter box as much. Good luck!!

We have a cat that is now about 8 months old and when he was that age he had the same problem..LOL. I talked with the vet about it and he laughed and said that it is the food. He really did not recommend one to me because he said different kittens bodies do different things. He said to just try a different food and give it about a week or little more to see if it helped and I would just have to find one that did not give him gas. I never gave him wet food it was always dry. Thank goodness it only took one change and the gas is gone. Look for the food that says it is for indoor. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

J.,

It sounds like your cat is getting a lot of wet food? It has been my experience that feeding the wet food instead of dry food to our dogs that we have had the same SMELLY problem. We try to feed them wet food as a treat but every time they eat it (no matter what brand it is) they have this horrid gas too. We have decided to give our pets mainly dry food and it seems to go away. We have experimented with this and I know that it is the wet food (or table scraps). I do not think their digestive tracts like whatever is in the wet food.

good luck

try changing the type of food you are feeding him. i really don't know the answer but just like humans , animals also are what they eat. look to see what the ingredients are because just because its labled cat food doesnt mean it is really nutritional for the cat. if you have vet ,check with them about a good brand. cats really need more attention than a dog. anyway , goodluck! kk

Hi J.,

I have had a similar problem with my dog. I have been told that their food can cause gas. A diet change helped our dog, maybe it could also help your sweet kitten. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi J.,
I am a vet tech, it sounds like kitten could possibly have dietary indescretion or even parasites. I would rec. taking to the vet to have a fecal check. Otherwise, make sure you are feeding a high quality kitten food.

has he had his stool checked for parasites. probably wont be visible to the naked eye. or, what are you feeding him. if he is eating canned food, switch him to dry but do it gradually. if you need a less expensive food, try purina or cycle or pets mart brand. just stay away from friskies, alpo, and other old school grocery store brand foods.

Have you taken him to the vet? A very common parasite that kittens have is coccidia that causes horrible smelling gas and stools. (I am a veterinarian.) You need to take him to the vet and have them do a fecal on him. Also, at 9 weeks he is due for shots if he hasn't started his series yet.

Well if you are feeding wet food switch to dry all natural food and if that does not work take him to the vet he could have stomach problems.
