I went to the dr today. I have been having an ear aches and dizziness for about two weeks. He looked in them and didn't see a single thing but perfect ear drums. However, he told me a viral infection of the ears going around so that is what he diagnosed me with. He only gave me meds for the dizziness. Has anyone ever heard of this? I am having a difficult time with this doctor. He is our primary care physician through the Army. And twice he has seen my kids for illnesses that were obvious... didn't give them meds... and I ended up having to tak them to the ER two days later from being so ill. So I am wondering... is this all he could have done for me?! Since it is viral, it should just go away, right?

What can I do next?

Ahhh... military medicine.

Didn't you know that ibuprofen and water cure cancer? Also broken bones, viral infections, bacterial infections, depression, burns, and hangnails.

<rolls eyes> Sorry. 20 years of military doctors (it's hit or miss) leads to a bit of jadedness in this area. There are some amaaaaaazing military med folk, some of the best teams in the world are attached to the military, like the burn unit in texas... but there are also people I wouldn't let treat my dead goldfish, for fear of them making things worse. And those people usually end up doing primary care for dependents.

2nd opinion with an ENT.

From experience: Find one that takes tricare/champus/whatever the military is using off base these days... THEN if you need a referral ask your primary for a referral to Dr. So & So. Then go. Do the research for them, and you're a LOT more likely to be able to see a specialist AND have them be covered.

I would go to an urgent care place or CVS or Walgreens clinic if you have one near by. Get a second opinion. You don't want to end up in the ER like your kiddos have done. My brother was in the military for years and one of my best friends hubby is right now. Because the Military doc is so far away they go to the urgent clinic place and have gotten second and third opinions when it has come to her husband. Don't be afraid to do that. My brother hated the military doctors because he was always getting misdiagnosed for the simplest and most common things.
Good luck and God Bless.

I am going to start out by saying that I had the most amazing INFERTILITY doctor that was a former military doctor. Why would the military need such a doc ??? I don't know. (Of course, he was an Endocronologist but still.)

I have had the same problem for about 3 months now. I did have an ear infection (at least that's how the doc diagnosised it) about mid-January. Got antibiotics and things got better. Started having the same issues about a month or so ago and went to a different doc and she said yes there is fluid behind ears, but no it is not an infection. She perscribed allergy meds which are helping a little but the full feeling in my ears (sometimes I feel like there is cotton shoved in there) and the pain still come and go. I'm thinking of making another appointment with the 1st doctor!!

I guess I wasn't terribly helpful, but you aren't alone!

In my humble opinion, my primary care doc is pretty worthless for anything except necessary referrals.
Get to a specialist immediately. I had similar issues and my primary care doc pretty much blew me off. I ended up with permanent hearing loss and chronic vertigo.
If this thing really doesn't resolve, the best ear docs in the nation are at House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles. People come from all over the world to see them. And they take all forms of insurance.
I don't mean to scare you, but I just don't want anyone to have happend what happened to me :(
Hopefully yours will resolve itself on it's own. But if there is no clear sign of infection it's possible it's TMJ or something else, which is actually a dental issue, just seek out answers until you hopefully find a solution.
My issue is autoimmune mostly, but if I had gotten to the right doctor in time, it quite possibly could have saved me a lot of drama.

Yes a virus should pass, but I would get a second opinion. If he did not properly diagnose your kids then he may have made an error with you as well.

Feel better!

I think I would call and ENT (Ear Nose Throat Dr). I went to my primary care Dr for pressure in my ear and feeling off balance and although my ear drums looked OK he still prescribed an antibiotic and antihistimine. Then I saw an ENT who diagnosed eustachian tube dysfunction and said the antihistimine would actually make it worse and the antibiotics wouldn't help since there was no infection. I recovered in 2 weeks. Your symptoms sound like labyrinthitis or other inner ear problem. It may indeed be viral and clear up on its own. If you don't get better soon see an ENT.
