My Doctor Doesn't Know What's Wrong... Maybe One of You Will

I had my beautiful baby boy on October 29th. I bled for maybe a week and a half and then it turned into a very light brown discharge with a foul odor. I called my doctor to ask about the discharge and she told me to come in and see her. So I did. She checked for infections and put me on anti-biotics. The tests for the infections all came back negative, but she had me finish out the anti-biotics anyway. At my "6 week check up" (It was done in between the 5 week and 6 week mark) the discharge and foul odor were still there. So she had me get a pelvic ultra-sound to check for retained products. She called me today to tell me that there were no retained products, and just told me to keep her informed without mentioning another possibility of what it could be or what we could do to treat it.

Any suggestions on what this could possibly be?

What can I do next?

To know... we ALL occaisonally get off the phone or out of an appointment and realize "Oops! Forget something!" PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CALL YOUR DOCTOR BACK and ask her specifically what else it could be and how long to wait until coming back in.

As for my own (not a MD) thoughts:

The two dangerous ones are vaginosis/PID and retained tissue. Since it's neither of those as yet... have you tried treating for yeast infection? Monistat would be my go to.

The other (not so happy) possibilities are:

a) It's hormones... and that's just the way you're going to smell for awhile... FDS and douching helps

or

b) You have a resistant strain of vaginosis because others were NOT dilligent as you have been in finishing your course of antibiotics.

If you treat for yeast infection OTC, and it's still discharging and smelling awful, I'd make another appointment. Personally, I'd wait about a week (not saying you should), UNLESS I got any other symptoms (fever, cramping, etc.). If any other symptoms cropped up I would go in immediately.

IDK... but I know for me after each of my births my smell is def not "the norm" that I usually have not pregnant. I just had my 3rd baby on Nov 9 and am almost 5 weeks PP. I still have a slight brownish discharge and I have the same odor that I had after each of my other births. All I can say it is def different after giving birth than my normal periods. Mine always cleared up after I had my first real period tho.

I agree with other posters either second opinion and/or call your Dr. back and ask again.

I experienced these same symptoms after delivering my twins last year. After several doctors visits, it just cleared on it's own after about 2.5 months. My doctor said all of my tests were normal and it's just the way my body was for a while :(

A few questions:

What color is the discharge?
How much discharge is there?
How is your health in general? Are you sleeping well? Eating well? Walking / strolling with baby?

Did you deliver naturally or by C-section? I noticed after my vaginal births, my discharge lasted longer and also smelt off. They must have cleaned me out pretty well after the C-section.

Now that you have been given the go ahead after your 5, almost 6 week check up, I would recommend you take several long hot baths with about 2 cups of WHITE vinegar and epsom salts in the water. The white vinegar provides a natural Ph for your vagina. And since your vagina is a self-cleaning oven, I would recommend natural things to restore health. Also, make sure you are eating lots of yogurt or taking a pro-biotic. And don't use soap down there.

Hi,

I am not sure if this is the same thing, but with my births---the after products and smells are completely different from a normal period. It had a distinct, funky smell to it--- as long as you are not in any pain, fever, cramping etc-- I wouldn't worry about it. Do a full-body cleanse and drink lots of water to flush out your system.
