My Daughter's Gecko Died :(

I noticed this morning that my daughter's gecko died. I could tell it was going to happen soon. It stopped eating and drinking and got pretty skinny. I warned my daughter I thought it was going to die and she started crying (she got over it really quickly). I am taking the cage into the garage before she gets home from school and I'm going to tell her it died and allow her to see it if she wants to say goodbye. How do we properly dispose of its body? I would feel pretty bad just throwing it away.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I told her when she got home. She had a good cry and wanted to look at her. Then she started going around the house to our other pets asking when they were going to die LOL. My Dad passed away suddenly last year so unfortunately she already knows about death. We're going to have a little burial for "Princess the Gecko" tonight when my husband gets home. Thanks again!

My daughter was beside herself when hers died. This may sound crazy, but I spent $45 at the vet to try to save it and if you can even believe it, it died at the vet's office. He felt it had an obstruction from the sand (sand not recommended, now I know why). Then, if you can believe this, we had it cremated since my husband does computer contract work for a crematorium and they told him they'd be happy to cremate any pets. And yes, they did it for us no charge. I bet you've heard it all now, but she still has her little bag with his ashes on her table in her room with a marker for him.

My daughter had an anole (tiny lizard). When it died, i made a "coffin" out of a checkbook box and some tissue. We buried him in our side yard. I think it helps them to know that you care.

She might want a burial. You can also take it to a vet to be cremated.

Depending on how your daughter deals with the news and if it's about the size of a hamster or smaller. You can bury him in the flower bed if your daughter wants to. Nature should do well on it's own.

My parents did this to my favorite hamster, planted an azalea over her and everything. I was very mature about the loss, missed my friend, but knew that nothing is forever. That bush bloomed like no tomorrow, it actually made me feel better knowing Mokkie was there...being useful to the flowers.

Good luck.

Bury it! When my pet rat died when I was a child, burying it helped give me closure.

I don't know how religious you are. We always to some sort of "prayer service" on our own for all our animals, no matter how they died or how their "burial" takes place. Before the toliet flushes with the fish in it we say a prayer. We put gerbials in small shoe boxes as kids and they are in the back yard at my parents house. But each time there was a prayer said to God about the life of the animal and the life the animal will live in heaven. We each say a memory of the animal. And then finish how ever is necessary. Some may choose to walk away before this part.
Best of luck!

Bury it in the garden, with a flower bulb.

We always buried the boys parakeets, lizards, tarantalas, mice and snakes. Find a cute little box, dig a hole, do a sweet little good bye service, bury him up and put a stone marker on the spot. It will soon be forgotten.

In my family we bury everything...mice, fish, dogs. We believe it brings proper dignity and honor to the animal which shared our home. Plus we believe it teaches our kids to respect all creature in both life and death. Ask your daughter to see if she has a preference. As a little humor when we buried our dog who died this summer, my in-laws were involved and this huge disagreement ensued over which direction to face the dog. My in-laws were bickering over the grave in Spanish to each other and then trying to argue for support in Spanglish to all of us standing around. My father-in-law was standing half in, half out of the grave, rotating the dog repeatedly while my mother-in-law was frantically waving her arms and practically shouting at him. It was completely ludcrious and made us laugh through our tears. To this day my stepdaughter still asks me very seriously if got the position correct. I'm sorry for your daughter's loss.

Oh have a little funeral. Say a little prayer over it and bury it in the yard.
We have buried mice and goldfish, and in my lifetime 13 cats.

I would bury it. When my goldfish died (ok, my daughter killed it.. :( ) a couple years ago, we buried it in the backyard of the house we were renting at the time. I had that fish for 4 years, I couldn't see throwing it away or flushing it down the toilet!

I wrapped it in a paper towel since it was so small. But you might put the gecko in a small box.

Why not give it a proper burial. find a small box and line it with some pretty paper and have your daughter put a flower in then bury it some place in the yard that she can put flowers on when she wants too. Soon the pain will wear off. Always worked with my kids ........

If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy your gecko's food from? I am also in Columbus and my Gecko died recently the same away, along with another gecko in my family as well.
