I don't know what the deal is. My daughter (20 months old) has always had trouble pooping! I try to give her foods and snacks with lots of fiber like whole wheat bread, raisins, yogurt, fruit and even prune juice. Nothing really seems to help. She seems to be in pain when she trys to go and sometimes will go a day or 2 without even going at all. Her stools are on the hard side. Does anyone else have this problem or know of any stool softeners or other foods I could try?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the advice! You know I haven't really offered her water that often. She normally drinks milk or juice. So I have already started to give her more water and we'll see what happens! Thanks again

If she's anything like my son, you might also want to pay attention to the kind of milk she drinks. His BM were always hard as well, unless I'd given him prune juice regardless of how much water he'd had that day, or how much fiber and avoidance of foods that cause constipation. A simple switch to soy milk fixed it. There's something in the cows milk itself he can't properly digest (he's good with cheese but not ice cream etc).

If the water doesn't work, you may want to give that a shot. Although, I think the water will help by leaps and bounds.

I would try increasing water if the doctor thinks everythings alright otherwise. Just plain old water, by 2 they can handle as much as they will drink (even at 1.5 they can have more then 16oz.) So try to increase water and hopefully that helps!

Hi K. I have a 3 year old girl who had the same problem. For her lots of water didnt do the trick. The doc said to giver her a half a tab of Senoket for a week, and also to give her Lactaid before eating anything with dairy. It has helped her a lot. Before she wouldnt go poop in the toilet I am guessing because she had to strain to get it out. Now she is going pretty good. I never would have thought that dairy could have been an issue, but it's working. So my suggestion, limit dairy and see if it helps.

Make sure she drinks plenty of water. My son has always liked water and we never have had a problem with his BM. His doctor also told us to make sure he is drinking plenty of water. The foods you are giving her isn't going to work without water.

Ask your pediatrician if its ok to give mineral oil. That's what mine recommended for my son. You just put a tablespoon or so in her milk or juice, or even mix it in her food. It will help soften the b.m. and make it easier for her to go.

My daughter has the same problem, and the gerber baby prune apple juice works great for us, and of course lots of water. I have a friend who says a fig newton works great to. I never knew that milk was constipating until her doc told us last week.

Hi K.

Do you give her water instead of juice. My daughter had a smiliar issue when she was around 24 months old. We took her to the doctor and according to him it was a behavior problem where she was tryint to hold the poop when she thought she was pushing it. she was on a stool softner for about month or so and she bacame quite regular and potty trained too. Hope this will help. Talk to your doctor about what u can do. Good luck.

I would bring it up with her doctor because there could be other underlying issues...........my son had problems when he was younger but he is 2 now and it is not such an issue anymore. I can't think of anything else cause usually prune juice would do the trick

Good luck

Is it possible that she has an allergy of some sort?
